Birthday picnic + family photos

For her husband's birthday, Elizabeth surprised him with a Central Park picnic. She decorated a bench in his honor, made a seven-layer chocolate cake from scratch, and brought along their sweet daughter and the family dog. Then she had an amazing photographer take family portraits, so they'd always remember the occasion. (Good thing her husband wore a cute outfit to work that day!) Isn't that an incredible and creative present?

It is sweet but I can't help but wonder: now we're "styling" birthdays. Photographs, yes. But candid - or candid-ish if that is as far as this, um, your generation will go? Even "artfully" candid? Wow. Something really weird is going on in, esp. in America. (I live here, too.)

  32. a family birthday picnic in the park is a divine idea, but i know if my husband then saw a professional photographer and stylist pop out his eyes would never stop rolling. especially on his birthday. i am not judging this couple - it looks like they had a lovely day, with photos to remember it by and maybe this husband enjoys being styled more than mine. i'm just cranky because i've been feeling lately like so many people are starting to live their lives as styled magazine editorial spreads for their blogs or facebook pages. i've caught myself with similar tendencies and i'm trying to stop. after all, can we really enjoy all of our adventures if we're so concerned about how everything's coordinated, if the lighting is flattering, or if it's even documented at all for all of our friends to see?

***my apologies in advance for the rant. the subject's just been on my mind a lot lately.***

  39. Hi Deanna. I'm Elisabeth, the wife, and I'm also one half of You + ME. So no random stylist waiting in the park. Just a wife surprising her husband with family photos to commemorate a place and occasion special to us. I completely agree that some of the most special moments aren't particularly pretty or photogenic, but it also makes us happy to take some fun family photos every couple years.

  48. Yay, we're so glad you guys like this (this is Miya, the other half of You + ME). Though Elisabeth & her family may look like they just stepped out of a magazine, the thing that makes me so excited to work with her is that she is genuinely this thoughtful and beautiful all the time. If you would like some pictures like this, Brookelyn Photography and You + ME are giving away a photoshoot to one lucky winner. Head on over to our blog (youplusmeequals.com) to enter! Thanks, Joanna, for featuring this!

  49. joanna and elizabeth - thanks for your thoughtful response and more information about the photo shoot. the photos are beautiful and elizabeth's whole family looks extremely adorable and very happy. my comments did not mean to take anything away from this specific set of photos - it's just an issue i've had on my mind a lot lately and unfortunately i chose that moment to go off about it. my apologies.

As one can see, most of the female readers thought this was a truly wonderful present,.....problem is, the present was for him. Trust me ladies, although very nice, it would not have made a "guys" top 10 list of birthday presents...
