Afternoons with Toby

Afternoons with Toby are the best. We sing and read, and one of us loves to stare for ages at a red shopping bag. I am totally in love with his mouth, which goes back and forth between a triangle and a circle. Although I want him to grow up, I also want him to stay exactly the same forever.

  14. Firstly, he is quite an adorable babe! Second, I'm going to get all academic on you and (as a librarian) give a loud cheer because you're reading together. People underestimate the importance of reading to even the tiniest of babies so hooray! In case you're ever looking for more books, a great site to find the best books for babies is beginningwithbooks.org.

    Enjoy each other...

  45. Hi Joanna! He is so adorable!!! I think reading to your baby/child is one of the best things you can do for them. I read to my daughter from the time she was born and she started reading when she was three! She's now 17 and off to UC Davis next fall! I definitely think all that reading to her played a role in her success! (I'm just a little proud; if you can't tell) I love your post and look forward to many more! Take care! Jennifer:)

  46. I agree with craftysunday, with my teacher hat on, developmentally you are doing wonderful things with reading to him. Latest research that is coming through is even reading while they are in the womb is beneficial so the earlier the better. Well done on creating such a beautiful bub and another tick for reading to him - it makes a world of difference!

  88. i know i don't know you and obviously don't know toby, but i just think he is so adorable. whenever you post a picture of him i get a lump in my throat. sounds like you are having a wonderful time getting to know each other better:)

ps - my mom read to me from the time i was in her tummy through elementary years - including when i was an infant. don't know if there's a correlation, but i love books and stories - always have...and by the time i entered 3rd grade had the reading and comprehension skills of a 12th grader, with the spelling abilities of an 11th grader. remember that to this day.

thus ends a very long comment, but wanted to share with you. xo and have a great weekend!

  101. Look at that wrinkly sweetness! He is sooo cute.

Although I am loving 20 months old more than 20 days old, I do miss the times when I could just set him down and read Lord of the Rings or Betsy Tacy to him and he didn't scurry away or take the book out of my hand and replace it with Lyle the Crocodile or Goodnight Gorilla.

Oh, I just want to snuggle that baby neck!
