Alex is hanging out with a friend tonight, so I'm on my own for dinner. I spotted this aged cheddar and apple melt on She Eats Bears, and it looks great, especially on raisin bread. I think I'm going to try it out. What do you make for yourself when you're eating alone?

I never thought about raisin bread. That's perfect. I've had grilled provolone cheese with pear which is YUM! I saw one grilled cheese with chocolate and had to try that too. Double yum!
ReplyDeleteHurray for featuring an Ottawa blogger!
ReplyDeletexo
yeah, the raisin bread would add such a yummy sweetness. and a grilled cheese with chocolate???? be still my heart.
ReplyDeleteMy self-cooking go-to: Toasted sandwich: pumpernickel + Bacon with Marmalade! Sounds weird, is delicious.
ReplyDeleteThat looks soo soo good!!! It's almost like a panini!! I make myself a panini when I'm by myself. Usually swiss cheese with pesto & mushrooms. yum!!
ReplyDeleteThat looks yummy!!
ReplyDeleteNot sure if this is good or bad. I always get lost in working and set an alarm on my phone to remind me to start cooking lunch and dinner for my brother and boyfriend to come home and eat. So I guess if they weren't eating with me, I would kind of forget and end up not eating, or eating M&Ms. So bad.
A great bowl of cereal!
ReplyDeletecroque monsieur!! mmmmm
ReplyDeleteSalads! My current fave is a modified Cobb with mixed greens, hard-boiled egg, avocado, blue cheese, bacon, grape tomatoes, croutons, and Dijon vinaigrette...yum!
ReplyDeleteAwesome. Reminds me of this super-yummy combination, too: Grilled Goat Cheese sandwich with Fig and Honey. (Raisin Bread with goat cheese, lemon zest, fig preserves, basil...and a sprinkle of powdered sugar on top! Decadent.)
ReplyDeletehttp://find.myrecipes.com/recipes/recipefinder.dyn?action=displayRecipe&recipe_id=642235
Yum. This looks awesome. I checked out her blog...what a cool one. I totally agree with her idea that cooking should be fun.
ReplyDeleteWhat?!!! That looks CRAZY good!!!! My go to meal during pregnancy has been grilled cheeses of all kinds. Never liked them before and my husband won't eat them, so thats what I eat when alone. :) Enjoy the crap out of it.
ReplyDeleteThat sound yum...
ReplyDeleteMost Monday's Balazs works late so I have this little tradition of having a sushi and then I make myself a tray of chocolate chip cookies....and eat them all up while watching Seinfeld! ( how much I love that)
Ps: All this talk about food made me hungry!
Kisses Joanna and have a nice meal...
Mmm that looks divine, and I never thought of using raisin bread!
ReplyDeleteMy go-to single meal is tofu stir fry with a multitude of sauces; boring but delicious!
That sounds delicious- I love love love apples and cheddar together.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite quick dinner is roasted broccoli with pasta and parmesan. So easy and so so good.
Oh that looks FABULOUS!
ReplyDeleteI hope it ends up as yummy as it looks.
xo
If I'm cooking for myself I usually make couscous and mix tofu and steamed veggies :)
ReplyDeleteI almost always make rice -- and usually a creamy chicken gravy. It is comforting to me.
ReplyDeleteLast night my family was out so I got takeout sushi and had a glass, or 2, of wine!!
ReplyDeleteI order thai!
ReplyDeleteThat looks amazing. When I'm eating alone, I SHOULD create things with lots of veggies, since my man is not the biggest fan and I love them. But if I'm lazy, I'll just resort to a box of mac n' cheese...gourmet style, with lots of fresh herbs, garlic and drizzled truffle oil! :) xo
ReplyDeleteWhen J is out for the night I almost always make myself some pasta with my Grammy's sauce. She made it really sweet and he practically hates it (he also just doesn't like pasta at all!) so I have to take the opportunity to get my fix. =)
ReplyDelete*kate
i am eating a sandwich right now and it does NOT look that good...
ReplyDeletesara
Whoa, instant mouth watering.
ReplyDeleteI'm not much of a cook but I always resort to some sort of asian food.
These look delicious! I usually make salads when I'm by myself, cause my BF refuses to eat them when he's around.
ReplyDeleteyum, that looks delicious! whenever i know i'm going to eat alone, i can't wait to have a big bowl of cereal! yes, even for dinner.
ReplyDeleteMmmm delicious : )
ReplyDeleteOh my...that makes my mouth water.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to be honest and say that if I get a night alone sans my tot and Hubby (which is INCREDIBLY rare) I usually get takeout or go out to eat with a nice book to read. I know...it's shameful.
Best,
Tina
Old, sharp cheddar with crisp red delicious apples is one of my all-time favourites snacks. I'm getting a craving as I type this!
ReplyDeleteyummmm. and on raisin bread? perfection. i often make myself a quesadilla or cook up some gnocchi with a butter & herb sauce. something quick and easy.
ReplyDeleteOhh, that looks so good! I am 36 weeks pregnant, and on nights like tonight when my energy is low, one of our staples is grilled cheese made with wholegrain bread, pesto, roasted red pepper, aged white cheddar, and goat cheese. Yum!
ReplyDeleteI devoted a whole blog to what I eat!
ReplyDeleteI worked at a british pub for a while and i looooved making ham cheese and tomato sandwiches. They are the perfect comfort food.
ReplyDeleteWhat a treat!
ReplyDeletei will have to try that sandwich! I love to make for myself a tortilla with melted cheese under the broiler then add sliced avocado and salsa!
ReplyDeleteyou know what else i love, joanna? adding some sort of delicious jam (apricot and peach are my fave)-- w/ some sharp cheddar. holy yum.
ReplyDeletep.s. LOVE those pictures of you and alex from yesterday-- must've looked at them more than a few times, then made my boyfriend look at them. i said "i'll be so lucky if i look half as good as her when i'm pregnant!" :)
Last night I was husbandless for dinner and I ended up getting too lazy to make anything. I got some take out that the hb doesn't usually like!
ReplyDeleteThat sandwich looks delicious! When I'm on my own for a meal, I hardly cook something (too lazy, haha), so a fast sandwich is what works the best.
ReplyDeleteThats my kind of sandwich! I want to eat that tomorrow when Huzz is out for the evening. Yum.
ReplyDeleteThat looks delicious!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I'm home alone I usually alternate between acting like the bachelor (although I should say bachelorette) stereotype and ordering in a pizza , or going way fancy with little finger foods and a martini. Depends on whether I'm trying to be as girly as possible since there are no boys around, or if I'm just feeling lazy and no one is home to be the wiser of my loafing ways.
marinated tempeh sauteed with onion and lacinato kale in basalmic vinegar and bragg's liquid aminos over garlic ravioli! my husband doesn't like kale or tempeh so it's my favorite dinner for one recipe.
ReplyDeletethat sammie does sound good. i'm thinking maybe a melt version on cinnamon raisin bagels!
MMmmm I love this on cinnamon raisin bread! daddy got me hooked on it very young!
ReplyDeleteThis looks amazinggg! My husband travels a lot so when I am eating alone it is usually something simple like cereal or farina-plus I don't want to dirty the kitchen :)
ReplyDeleteyou're so sweet, alicia!! thank you!
ReplyDeleteYummmmm! That looks so delicious! I can't wait to try this recipe!!
ReplyDeleteJessica
ooh - yummy. love that gooey cheese.
ReplyDeleteI love to make a handful of penne with some cream, a drop of truffle oil and heaps of parmesan.
It's simple and satisfying comfort food!
http://ladulcivida.blogspot.com/
my eat-alone meals are really embarrassing: tortilla chips, instant ramen, mediocre chinese takeout, a brownie or three...you get the idea. that sandwich looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteI am drooling all over my keyboard! I love grilled cheese with Brie & pear on pumpernickel {yumm}!
ReplyDeletethis looks delicious!when I'm alone I usually eat a tuna salad with bread...
ReplyDeleteOkay, that looks SOOO good! I'm drooling on my keyboard!
ReplyDeleteMe? Ugh... the shame. Instant oatmeal with dried cranberries and some fresh fruit! It's fast and easy ;)
xxMK
Delightful Bitefuls
Yum! I have to try this with the raisin bread - can't believe I never thought of it since cheddar and raisin bread are to of my favorite foods! Yum! When I am eating alone I usually make grilled salmon, haddok or scallops with mashed potatoes and cole slaw - childhood favorites my hubby doesn't like at all! But sometimes it's just cottage cheese with veggies and italian dressing...
ReplyDeleteall the sandwiches on this site are a-mazing. i could eat them all day, every day. http://grilledcheeseacademy.com/
ReplyDeleteJoanna,
ReplyDeleteI can just imagine how crazy pregnancy must be, but you always manage to have a cheery post or two each and every day. Good for you for being such a positive mommy-to-be!
p.s. this food blog is making my mouth water...thanks for another great blog introduction :)
oh man, that grilled raisin bread looks so good! i always do grilled cheese and turkey bacon. yum.
ReplyDeleteI eat Kraft macaroni and cheese beef jerky and ice cream when I'm home alone. Contrast this to my boyfriend who makes himself pork tenderloin with asparagus and balsamic glaze.
ReplyDeleteI am totally the bachelor in this relationship.
That panini sure looks tasty though!
That looks absolutely DELISH!
ReplyDeleteSoups, salads, and sandwiches have my HEART when it comes to food!! I could live out of deli's. haha
ReplyDeleteWhen I'm at home, cooking for myself though, I normally just end up with rice. It's my go-to.
french toast with challah bread and bacon OR spaghetti with garlic infused olive oil, bacon bits, and a healthy sprinkling of chopped basil and parmesan. notice the recurring theme of bacon
ReplyDeletethis is making me really hungry :)
ReplyDeleteMmmm! That looks yummy! Thanks for visiting my blog! Totally made my day :)
ReplyDeleteyummmmmm.. They have a new restaurant in LA completely dedicated to grilled cheese sandwiches. I have been meaning to check it out, I think this picture just convinced me.
ReplyDeleteThis looks so good! Similar to you, I will make a grilled cheese (or some other grilled sandwich concoction) or a giant salad with tons of veggies so I can save room for dessert :) Enjoy it and let us know how it is!!
ReplyDeleteI love the photo...makes it look so yum!
ReplyDeletejust stuff myself with some Spanakopita. bought at Whole Foods, shoved into the oven and savored in my mouth while watching Julie & Julia!
ReplyDeleteI drive through Wendy's ;)
ReplyDeleteHoly moses - that sammich looks DELICIOUS!! Thank you so much for introducing me to that blog!
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of a favorite sammich I like to make... I do big chunks o' brie with sliced pears & caramelized red onions - then grill it up.
If I'm feeling lazy I'll just do brie with jelly - my sister makes a strawberry rhubarb jam that goes AWESOME with it!
Nachos when I'm alone. That way, I get all that cheesy salsa-y goodness all to myself.
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness, that looks sinfully good!! definite food porn.
ReplyDeletexox alison
Joanna, you never showed pictures of you in that cute blue and white stripped maternity dress! Did it fit well? :)
ReplyDeleteYum, I'm going to try that as well! I usually put eggs in my sandwich.
ReplyDeletethat looks SO SO yummy. there is nothing better than melting cheese on toasted bread. i like to make pear and gruyere sandwiches. sweet + salty = heaven!
ReplyDeleteyummmmmmmmmmm
ReplyDeletei want some
I can't seem to stop eating toasted wheat bread with avocado, poached egg, sea salt, and lots of pepper.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite sandwich of the moment is prosciutto, pear, and Boursin on a fresh Baguette, but I usually live on chicken vegetable soup (less calories, more nutrients).
ReplyDeleteYou're killin me w/ those photos Jo! I'm drooling....that yummy melted cheese...that sweet raisin bread...I think it's time for dinner.
ReplyDeleteThose photos have inspired me to register for a panini press.
ReplyDeleteOnly 2 weeks til the wedding!
www.highheelsandddp.blogpsot.com
ohhh my goodness...this looks divine. I already ate and yet this makes me hungry...:)
ReplyDeleteThat looks simply....YUM!
ReplyDeleteIronically, I was eating dinner alone as I read this post; therefore, I will tell you what I was eating: my grandmother's canned pork with BBQ sauce, mushrooms, and green peppers all wrapped up in a whole wheat soft shell...mmm. Reminds me of home.
ReplyDeleteJoanna, I love your name.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen Pierrot Le Fou by the french filmmaker Goddard? I feel like you would enjoy that film!
dinner sans husband are my favorite!! they usually include a lot of green and/or sushi! he is mr. picky! oh ps... he's going away for the weekend! :)
ReplyDelete(i'm only excited about him leaving because of my meal possibilities! heheh)
Yummy is right... with a bubbly ginger-ale :)
ReplyDeleteThis looks amazing! I usually make quesadillas with black beans. This looks much better!
ReplyDeletelooks divine! I either do the classic grilled cheese with tomato soup or a baked potato with a touch of sour cream and salsa (and cheese of course!)....have a good night!
ReplyDeletemouthwatering!!!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.dailymixla.com
This looks so yummy!!!
ReplyDeleteCarissa
http://copiouscouture.blogspot.com
Oh no she didn't! I am literally just off to the grocery store to buy these ingredients and I'm going to eat it SO HARD!
ReplyDeletethat picture isn't helping my diet, that looks amazing... cant wait to try this one out. wow I think raisin bread makes everything better.
ReplyDeleteI make salad. Or a call to the local pizzeria for delivery:)
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry... what did you say? I couldn't hear you over that gorgeous melty cheese...
ReplyDeleteI adore a good grilled cheese sandwich. My favorite pub in Philly, Prohibition, always has a new combo. The raisin bread sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteWhen I'm home alone I do snack meals if there are no leftovers to use. A little of this, a nibble of that...lots of carrots and hummus, walnuts, maybe a half sandwich or toast, or maybe just ice cream :) It's difficult to want to actually cook something!
I do grilled cheese and soup a lot - but nothing as fancy as this number... looks yuuuuumy!
ReplyDeleteMMMM!!! I expect a full report on how it went, tomorrow. I usually make a huge bowl of popcorn- EXTRA BUTTER!
ReplyDeleteHey i love this pics, that sandwich looks so crazily good1 I love chocolate toast actually but I am a huge fan of grilled cheese sandwiches...
ReplyDeleteAlso I have a popcorn machine that comes in handy :)
Awesome blog, cool pics too :)
perthfashionista.blogspot.com
pardon me, while i wipe the drool off my keyboard. YUM!
ReplyDeleteOh YUM!!!!!! That makes my recently dairy free mouth just drool!!! Usually I have poached eggs on 5 grain toast. With marmite!!!! If you're a kiwi you HAVE to have it on marmite!
ReplyDeleteAh! I actually always attempt a grilled cheese when I'm alone but I almost always burn it. It is the oddest thing really. I am a really good cook EXCEPT grilled cheese. For the life of me...I will cook one non burnt grilled cheese sandwich in this lifetime :).
ReplyDeleteYet tonight (home alone), I am making chicken.
I normally make a grilled cheese or salad when my boyfriends not home for dinner.
ReplyDeleteThose pics look yummy. Now I'm hungry, thanks a lot :)
apple and cheese sandwiches are SO good! yum yum :) sliced apples + cheese = also one of my favourite snacks!
ReplyDeleteahhh, you just made me love sandwiches more. :) and yes, i like to make sandwiches when eating alone.
ReplyDeleteThis looks sooooo yummy! My go to solo meal: grilled baby swiss cheese sandwich on whole wheat and tomato soup.
ReplyDeletehttp://minimalinfluence.blogspot.com/
ohmygosh - i eat strange things when i'm eating alone... two slices of turkey and a spoon of frosting = dinner! tonight, i had watermelon :P i'd like to hear how you like this sandwich - thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletethis is way.too.inspiring.
ReplyDeleteOMG YUM!!!
ReplyDeleteLooks really good! Never thought to combine cheese and apples before... I'll definitely try it. I usually make myself an egg and cheese sandwich on toast, and maybe some tomato soup. I love comfort food :)
ReplyDeleteWhat I love about this post (besides that it is food) is that I can make it. It looks delicious and is something I can actually fit into my hectic work schedule.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! :) Marcie
HELLO! This looks delish! I am getting a panini maker when I get married. Just one more thing to look forward too :) Yippee!!
ReplyDeleteB.
that looks delicious! although tastier, this sandwich kind of reminds me of the time i made a tuna fish sandwich on a blueberry bagel for my friend...only because we were out of regular bread. :)
ReplyDeletexoxo
http://sweatshirtdressshirt.blogspot.com/
Mmmmmm! Love the combination of sweet & savory here!
ReplyDeletexoxooxx
Denalee
macaroni cheese or a cheese toastie. or pancakes if i'm in a breakfast for dinner type of mood!
ReplyDeleteYUM! I'm trying that tomorrow! That looks incredible!
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm always surprised when I find such a popular blogger that I haven't heard of. Your blog is so fun!
When I'm alone, I normally eat quesadillas. I'm a sucker for cheese...and all things of Mexican cuisine.
Following! Though, I'm sure I won't make much of a difference. ha! ^_^
Love you for posting this beautiful sandwich...
--Abigail @ Rear Window
I usually open the cookbook and find a new recipe. That way I'll know if it's a winning recipe and cook it for others. If it's a dud, out comes the grilled cheese :)
ReplyDeleteLooks so, so very delicious. I've been having a bit of a grilled cheese moment as well (http://penguinsandparentheses.blogspot.com/2010/05/monsieur-camembert.html). And big thanks for the intro to She Eats Bears... What a great name, and it's a lovely blog, too.
ReplyDeleteYummy yummy! When I'm on my own I usually just make something easy like pasta or stirfry (or a toasted sandwich like you!)
ReplyDeleteyummy yummy, makes my tummy longing:)
ReplyDeletehave a beautiful day!
greetings from norway and masy:)
Omg, that looks so good! *drool*
ReplyDeleteI *heart* anything with cheese in it. ;)
Xx
Oh my goodness, this looks gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteok time for lunch! that looks delicious!!

Yum. That sandwich looks absolutely delicious. Any variation of a grilled cheese is a winner in my book :)
ReplyDeleteLovely B.
how were they? i'm going to visit my mom on friday and i'm thinking of making them with her this weekend!
ReplyDeletei'm a big fan of easy one person dinners ;-) my fave is some yummy/stinky cheese and crackers...easy.
ReplyDeletethis makes me want to get a Panini maker stat!
this looks delicious! do let us know how it tastes :)
ReplyDeletethre words: nom nom nom.
ReplyDeleteMy go to for a quick bite when alone is cereal or a salad, but next time I think it will be this sandwich.
ReplyDeleteI make a spicy salad with bulgur & prawns...It's a recipe from Michele Cranston, who was before Food Editor of Marie-Claire Australia and it's to die for and super easy to make.
ReplyDeleteI actually made heaps of it last Sunday for Mila's B'day...enough to feed 14 kids + 24 adults
http://bodieandfou.blogspot.com/2010/05/milas-5th-bday-partymajor-success.html
Oh my goodness, that looks so good!! When I'm on my own I'll make eggplant parm (my husband hates eggplant), or if I'm not feeling that ambitious, grilled cheese using provolone, tomato slices and fresh basil.
ReplyDeleteoy this is making my mouth water!!!!
ReplyDeleteAvocado paninis with meatless meatballs and aioli sauce. It sounds like an intense combination, but oh so good.
ReplyDeletewww.platformmag.net
Mmmm, I want that right now!
ReplyDeleteLooks wonderful! I'd like to try it too.
ReplyDeleteWhat I eat when I'm alone varies. Recently, I am continuously preparing the same snack--one peeled and chopped apple with lemon juice and sugar. This recent ritual began with thoughts of apple pie. It seems I enjoy the pre-cooked apple pie filling better than the pie itself. I feel the same way about cookies...
And rhubarb. I can't stop eating rhubarb.
OMGOSH now I want a grilled cheese sandwich!
ReplyDeleteOh my ,, that looks absolutely Delish!!
ReplyDeleteNow I have to make one :)
Great photos!
xoxo

Yum, yum, yum! Great choice.
ReplyDeleteyummy.. I can sure do with one of these now
ReplyDeleteYUM!
ReplyDeleteI mainly eat biscuits when I'm alone. LOTS of biscuits! x
Curry. Lots and lots of vegetable curry. My husband hates coconut milk, so I go. to. town. when he's out for the night. Deliciousness.
ReplyDeleteyum! i always make couscous with spinach and feta. quick and delicious. and great for leftovers at work the next day.
ReplyDeletethat sandwich looks so awesome
ReplyDeleteOh wow, that looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteGood lord that sandwich looks fantastic. Pregant food is the best. I'm partial to cereal for dinner when the hubby is away.
ReplyDeletei love panini grills! wow, my mouth is watering. that sandwich looks absolutely divine and too good to be true!
ReplyDeleteThese photos make my mouth drool aching for a grilled cheese. There is a grilled cheese roach coach in Los Angeles, that is incredible and I recently blogged about it.
ReplyDeleteI had this when I went to Amsterdam at a little cafe..I think there was honey and goat cheese on it as well... AND it was so yummy!
ReplyDeleteDarling am single, I eat alone everyday!...ok slight exaggeration, I eat out with friends quite a bit. Actually this pizza place where I live just started a ladies night on Wednesdays. So yesterday I had some yummy pizza, for free! When I eat alone I make quick and simple meals like pasta and pesto, rice, salad. Being a London girl, living in Venice, I think it's my duty to try as many Italian dishes as I can.
ReplyDeletethis is a perfect storm of tastes :) will try for sure.
ReplyDeleteMarysol (She Eats Bears) is an amazing cook! And lucky for us she catered our store opening! You can see some pictures here:
ReplyDeletehttp://notrevictoire.blogspot.com/2010/04/how-west-was-won.html
http://notrevictoire.blogspot.com/2010/03/thank-heavens-for-marysol.html
YUM, I usually make my apple melts with brie...but I bet aged cheddar is amazing too!
ReplyDeleteВосстановление зрения
ReplyDeleteYUUMMMM ... big fan of like sandwiches!
ReplyDeleteI try to eat very healthy, so when I'm alone (every night for dinner), it's usually just baked chicken seasoned with red pepper flakes, and some stir-fry veggies.
ReplyDeletei could eat this right about now!!! even thought it's 2 am where i'm at!
ReplyDeletej.
I love a good cheese sandwich with banana ... who never tasted should try it, it's delicious!
ReplyDeletethat looks scrumptious :)
ReplyDeleteI usually have 1) white rice cooked with soy milk (a lot!), add cinnamon and sugar 2) sliced cucumber and cheese sandwiches 3) a baguette with your favorite cheese or herb spread 4) a nanner and peanut butter sandwich!
God, they look so delicious! I think I won't be able to resist them and make them one day despite my diet. They're just worth it.
