Simple pleasures

Our friends brought over pink peonies the other day, and every day they're getting bigger and prettier...
And after keeping my eyes peeled for a new vase for ages, I suddenly realized that a wine bottle (with the label peeled off) does the trick beautifully! I love the green color; it's almost like a stem.
Pin It Now!

I know! I recently decided to try the wine bottle as a vase. I tend to keep old wine bottles from significant nights...and It's a nice way to brighten up the little collection I've got going on. it's fun and different.

The peonies in my front yard are about a week away from blooming, provided spring ever fully arrives here in Salt Lake. The week they bloom is my favorite week in the garden all year.

Hadn't thought of doing this with wine bottles, but have used apple juice (pretty leaves!), jam jars (neat designs!) and maple syrup bottles (old fashioned goodness!) before.

LOVE peonies :)

The wine bottles are a great idea. We don't have wine bottles in Pakistan, but I use old Coca Cola bottles instead. I put 7 of them up on a shelf with flowers in them, and a put a small lamp behind them. They glow with a warm light.

I love peonies. But I always feels awkward when I say the word Peony.

Peonies always remind me of the Barefoot Contessa. She's all about them.

i love using old bottles to hold flowers. we don't have any real vases in our home. i love walking on the beach and picking up bottles because there are some of the coolest glass bottles that drift to shore from all over the world! and they end up growing interesting stuff on them from being in the ocean, which adds a little extra zest!

and your flowers are beautiful! i bet they look smashing in your green bottle!

lisa said...

I heart peonies! I saw them at the florist the other day and couldn't justify the $20 but after seeing your picks, I think I need them. Like, now.

Peonies are my favorite. Have you ever tried using an empty wine bottle as a candle holder? You can put a taper candle in it and it only gets more and more beautiful with additional wax drippings.x

After the flowers in a mason jar craze, I decided to try flowers in a wine bottle and the ensemble looked fabulous. Other fun places to put flowers: in clear, tall root beer mugs and in flour and sugar jars.

I can't really tell from that photo, is that what your peonies are in? I'd love to see a picture of them in the bottle!

Funny - just the other day I decided that instead of taking wine bottles to recycling, I'd peel all the labels off and save them. Some labels come off easier than others.

At my last dinner party I used a very light blue wine bottle to serve water out of!

I've been using different containers for years...a French (!) friend just left here but asked upon arriving...what is that darling vase holding those little roses? A Goya whole peppercorn jar sans pepper & label. It ain't that difficult, ladies. My mother has done this forever...bricolage.

Countdown for Jo...peonies expanding - good metaphor.:)

I love pretty bottles! unfortunately, I have no room to save them all, but I am still holding on to the cute, curvy bottle that held the sparkling lemonade that I drank with my lunch last friday. I think it would make the perfect bud vase... now I just need to get me some pretty peonies! :)

There's a dairy here that sells yogurt at our whole foods and I save every one of those bottles- they look like old glass milk jugs and I put my milk from the plastic container in them- much prettier to look at in the fridge....I also use them for water with floating berries or sliced ginger or cucumbers, ice tea, lemonade, etc......Oh, old bottles are the loveliest....and the more the merrier...I also save the glass salad dressing bottles for flowers and use them in 3's.Reuse & reinvent makes for the best recycling!

What a coincidence - I bought a bunch of peonies for my desk at work yesterday and I have been watching them bloom in absolute admiration. They are the most stunning flower! I must say, it is going to be one of the only reasons I look forward to going to work today;-)

Wine bottles and soda bottles work wonderfully for a few stems -- another trick is coffee cannisters and candle jars. When you're done, simply clean out the wax and voila! Perfect for a short, stubby arrangement! :)
