Baby movie

The baby is due in less than four weeks (I'm so excited), and our doctor told us that labor can take ages. She suggested bringing a movie to the hospital, in case things move slowly. After brainstorming, Alex and I decided on When Harry Met Sally, one of our all-time faves. It's funny to think of watching it between contractions. Which movie would you have chosen? (My friend Leigh watched Say Anything!)

P.S. The horror version...

  3. ooh, good ones!! it feels like a bizarre decision to make! :)

  4. I'm so excited for your family. Luckily I was in the labor & delivery room a little after noon and delivered after 4 but before 5. I couldn't feel my contractions the entire pregnancy and no one believed me!

Anyway, I think when Harry Met Sally is an interesting movie to take. If I would have taken a movie it probably would have been one of Tom Hanks movies w/ Meg Ryan.

    Do you have music?

    ReplyDelete
  5. I brought Austin Powers with me (I wanted to laugh! LOL) BUT I didn't end up watching it...too distracted and unable to focus :-)

  6. aww best wishes Jo! Great movie!!

  7. Oooh, good choice, Joanna! What a great movie.

I think I would bring Arrested Development (I know, it isn't a movie, but it's something that I always get lost in and laugh laugh laugh). And Amelie. And The Hangover.

And probably more. Hmm, my hospital bag will have to be pretty roomy...

  8. I love these horror remixes. Did you see the Mary Poppins one? Awesome!

I think I would bring So, I Married an Axe Murderer.

    ReplyDelete
  9. How fun! I didn't know you could bring movies to watch during labor! I would choose Pretty Woman - so what if it is about a hooker, I LOVE that movie.
Congrats Joanna, wishing you the best in the upcoming weeks! :)

  13. That is such a great idea! I'd probably choose Thing Called Love (my fav movie ever!) or Footloose.

  16. Oh, I love When Harry Met Sally! Instant cheerfulness! My mom watched Tarzan movies while she was in labor, and she claims that's why I "turned out the way I did."

    ReplyDelete
  17. There's noooo way I could do a movie! I would need my ipod, headphones, my baby-pushing playlist, a hot bath, my husband, and silence from every one else around me :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. I brought "Love Actually"...didn't make it through much, though! haha!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I watched the Elite Squad and was having some hard core contractions the whole time. Not sure what I was thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Congrats & lots of luck! Erica.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I love that film. I'd probably take either Love Actually or Notting Hill.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'd screen a tribute to John Hughs...

    16 Candles
    The Breakfast Club
    Ferris Bueller's Day Off

(And a couple that he penned...)
    Pretty In Pink
    Some Kind of Wonderful

Seriously, these movies changed my life. A fitting choice. And if labor were to outrun the screening...yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  23. what a great idea. 4 months, wow! so excited for you. xo!

  24. Ferris Bueller's Day Off!! Ferris is the ultimate philosopher!

  25. Moonstruck with Nicholas Cage and Cher is great.
The "horror" trailer of WHMS was hilarious! Thanks for the laugh!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hmmm... this isn't a movie, strictly speaking, but I'd probably want a bunch of MST3K episodes to watch, because that show always makes me laugh. Or possibly The Princess Bride, my husband and I both love that movie and "Storybook Love" was our wedding song. And if my husband gets any say, I suspect there will be a few Doctor Who episodes involved!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Great choice! Man I love that movie.

During my labour I watched 'little miss sunshine' because it makes me laugh and I finding it very moving. And when I say "watched" I mean it was on but my mind was definitely elsewhere. However it was nice to look up every once and a while and focus on something other than my contractions.

So excited for you and your next adventure!

OK, total assvice here, but don't bring a movie to the hospital! Watch it at home! If you are able to watch a movie, you should still be at home! :) If you are smiling and taking photos, stay at home! When you think you can't do it anymore - that's when you need to get yourself to the hospital (the longer you are sitting around at the hospital, the more likely they will induce, something that I really wanted to avoid - petocin sounds horrible). This book, which is pretty radical, but has great "sign posts" to look for so you know when you should go to the hospital (take the rest with a grain of salt) is called "Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way" - I'm not saying you have to go natural, but the sign posts are really, really helpful (I made my husband read it, too).

  32. I watched Mean Girls. I think that movie is hilarious!

    ReplyDelete
  33. After 35 hours of labor (but only 6 at the hospital) we tried to watch Quantum of Solace. I have NO idea what it was about. We wanted to watch the Big Lebowski but they didn't have DVD players, only on-demand. Also, my son was born (after 50 hours of labor) to Queen, We are the Champions.
Congrats, Jo! I'm a friend of Paul and Lucy's.

    ReplyDelete
  34. A great choice! I just watched that movie for the first time ever (yes, and I am 25) last week. Loved it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. My husband TRIED turning the television on during my labor. Needless to say, it went off in less than 5 minutes...

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  36. The horror version was crazy! The magic of movie editing!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Michelle12:27 PM

I agree with Megan. Stay home as long as possible!! You are more comfortable at home. Just go to the hospital once you hit the 3-5 minute apart stage :)

I labored at home for 7 hours then labored 7 more hours at the hospital.

    ReplyDelete
  38. that is one of my favorite movie!!
I have seen this many times!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. lol, I don't know if I can see this movie the same way again- haha! That was great.

I still love this movie. :)

  40. Since when can you watch movies while in labor? My personal choice would be Sabrina, with Audrey Hepburn. But I love 'When Harry Met Sally.'

    ReplyDelete
  41. Mean Girls! It's so fast-paced that times flies by.

    ReplyDelete
  42. We where stuck with the OMEN in a loop... 24 hrs of it.
After the baby was born and all we can see was dark black eyes and dark black head, my husband had to ask the nurse if he can check him for 666....
I was more into music... it help me better.

    ReplyDelete
  43. i would definitely choose a comedy! hmmm not sure though. maybe something like in the loop or some sex and the city haha

Good choice! A friend of mine brought Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. She said singing along with the songs was a nice distraction. :-)

  45. Say Anything is one of my all time favorite movies ever! "That'll never be me, that'll never be me, that'll never be, never be me noooooo!" Sorry, I digress. Hmmm, it would be a toss up between Father of the Bride and Aliens. But let me tell you, I had NO time to even read through the stack of magazines I had painstakingly chosen for my labor day. One second I was cozy in my bed, hair did, flipping marvelously through my mag and the next I'm hooked up, sweating bullets, hair a mess and squeezing what seemed like a watermelon from my body. Oh the memories!:) Have a wonderful Mom-to-be day!

  46. better yet, stay at home for as long as you can stand it!

    Other choice: Wedding planner!

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I like the When Harry Met Sally movie idea.. but my advice: Just bring a comfy pillow and try to SLEEEEP!!!
not much longer! Happy 'soon-to-be' Mothers Day!

    ReplyDelete
  53. That's one of my favorite movies too! I'd probably watch Father of the Bride! :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. hm....i would go for "Whatever works" by Woody Allen:) so funny that it can actually make your delivery quicker;)

    Great movie choice!
Why don't you labour at home longer? If you can sit and watch a movie, you don't need to be sitting in a hospital, the more comfortable and relaxed you are, the less tension and pain you will feel. Labour can/does take a long time but it also takes focus and attention at that stage. Whatever you choose remember that birth is what womens bodies were designed to do, if it didn't work well, our species wouldnt have survived!
I can't wait to see him.

  56. Id have to take Some Like it Hot. It's my fav :)
    Good luck!!

  57. I'd bring My Cousin Vinny.

  58. How strange - I posted about this movie today too, it's my favourite feel good movie and it's just been one of those weeks... Excellent choice for waiting out the baby's arrival!

    ReplyDelete
  59. excellent choice! my baby came two months ahead of schedule, so i didn't get to do much planning (or bring anything fun for that matter).... but if i could have, it definitely would've been something funny. maybe Waiting for Guffman or This is Spinal Tap? :)

    ReplyDelete
  60. Definitely stay at home for as long as you can. Too many women go to the hospital the moment they go into labor. I labored at home for 10 hours and it was much more relaxing to walk around my neighborhood, eat my own food and watch TV on my couch.

    ReplyDelete
  61. great choice!!this is one of my fav movies ever!!

    ReplyDelete
  62. "when harry met sally" would definitely be on my short list!

    ReplyDelete
  63. when Harry met Sally is CLASSIC and such a fav of mine. Good choice. You might want something more fast paced and distracting though.

    ReplyDelete
  64. This movie cracks me up. And so does the idea of watching it in between contractions.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I was induced on a Sunday night - just in time to watch the Oscars start to finish! It took another 36hours till our little guy arrived but in the interim we lucked out and found The Godfather, Parts I and II on tv. There was something great about watching the whole engrossing saga - definitely kept my attention!

    ReplyDelete
  66. well, that's quite a question. perhaps not Rosemary's Baby. but maybe something HBO, like True Blood or Six Feet Under. i have to say that

    a) labour can take a while, yes!! b) moving around really really helped me, when it was just starting, we went to bed with the idea of getting some 'rest' and i just had to keep shooting out of bed, i couldn't lay still! not sure i would've been up for watching a movie.
    c) have you got a tens machine booked for the early stages? good for also taking your mind off things.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I was in labor for 17 hours before things got interesting. During that time I ate spicy Thai food (make sure to eat something before you go in because they won't let you eat once you get admitted) and walked - A LOT which really sped things along. Then I watched episodes of Grey's Anatomy while timing contractions for three hours (had my son in 2007 when I still watched that show). Once I got to the hospital I got in the spa and that was a great way to pass the time and centimeters :] Wish I had thought to bring a movie to the hospital, think I would have gone for Moonstruck. I had him 13 hours after I was admitted to the hospital for a total of 33 hours of labor. And I'd do it all again in a heartbeat!

  68. My husband & I love Manhattan Murder Mystery. Ha-larious. Great cast with Woody Allen, Diane Keaton, Angelica Houston.... a great NYC movie :) I'm not a momma but my sister in law just had her baby and it was 30 hours of labor - not all active of course! ;-) . This would have been a great idea!

    ReplyDelete
  69. When Harry Met Sally is my FAVORITE!
    Great choice!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I think I'd bring Honey I Shrunk The Kid.
Might make delivery seem a bit easier.

    ReplyDelete
  71. During my visit to NY in 2008 I went to Katzs Delis because of this movie.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Depends on the time of year and my mood, but i'd say i'd pack up traditional comfort movies like

Overboard, Groundhogs day, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Raising Arizona, or anything John Hughes like uncle buck lol... something i knew real well but loved

    ReplyDelete
  73. I can't believe you are so close! That is so exciting!

    I'd probably bring Amelie.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Wow, this is really interesting! I have never heard a nurse or doctor tell someone to bring a movie! Is this a new thing? I bet it helps distract you so much! What a great idea! And a great choice in film!

    ReplyDelete
  75. My husband popped in "Bill Cosby - Himself" during my first labor. he thought it was so funny when bill says "Congratulations, you've given birth to a lizard."

Then later in the film, Bill jokes about life with children.

    It was all too ironic.

    ReplyDelete
  76. My sister took Jane Austen movies, and my best friend watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

This is one thing that makes me almost look forward to childbirth.

    Good choice! Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  77. great choice! what a funny question to have to answer. i suppose i'll have to start thinking now so i can have a remote idea by the time i'm pregnant and due :) have a lovely weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Wow I think you can tell a lot about a person by the way they answer this question... I feel pressure to provide a "cool" answer. But if I was being true to myself, I would pick a Hugh Grant movie, any one will do, they all thrill me.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I think.... marie antionette or motorcycle diaries! :)

    ReplyDelete
  80. Great choice! I love that movie!

My labors have a history of being quick once they get going, so I never brought entertainment. But when I had my son, my husband was laughing at Napoleon Dynamite on the TV while I was in transition in the shower with my midwife. It definitely helped relax him, and now he links that movie to Coop's birth. It cracks us up.

    ReplyDelete
  81. When Harry Met Sally is one of my all time favorites too! I would either go with that or You've Got Mail. Those are my two go-tos for feel-good comfort.

That trailer is so funny, by the way. It's interesting how a little suspenseful music can change the whole movie :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. Wow, there are so many good movie choices here! Rather than a film, I'd probably decide on a season The Office, because (a) it's hilarious and (b) it doesn't have to end.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I picked Best In Show, thinking I might need the humor, but we didn't end up watching it.

    ReplyDelete
  84. That's always been one of my favorite movies! Even though I have it on disc I watch it every time it's on TV. I hope you don't need to kill too much time during labor; you can always watch the movie in snippets when your little one is asleep ;)

That recut trailer is hilarious! Have a great weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  89. No movie for me, because I get frustrated if I don't see the whole thing. I would rather take a sitcom like That '70s Show or Seinfeld.

    ReplyDelete
  90. We are trying to get pregnant. When the time arrives I will love to wacht "In the mood for love" of Wong Kar-Wai at home, with candels. I've seen it a thousand times. Beatifull music, amazing colors and I just love the sound of chinese language, so relaxing. Sorry for my english, I'm from Spain. Mucha suerte with your new baby!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  99. Such an excellent choice! Very New York, very funny...wonderful!

  100. The horror version is hilarious...I had no idea how many awkward, spooky moments there were in that movie. If I was having a baby any time soon I'd watch The Family Stone...I want a big family just like that.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Definitely no horror flicks...Something cheerful or funny...The hangover makes me laugh so hard my sides hurt....I think laughs like that would push that baby out in SECONDS...So something that makes you laugh a lot...Or something with great music. Can't beat Audrey Hepburn, breakfast at tiffany's or something with nice scenery...lots of love to you in this journey...
