Fresh flowers
Hope you all had wonderful weekends! I had bought some flowers for our party and am now loving having them scattered around the house. It's amazing how one bunch of fresh flowers can make an entire room look instantly beautiful.
Also, the guy at the flower shop offered a great tip: Hydrangeas often wilt very quickly (which is a drag), so he recommended changing the water and re-cutting the bottom of the stem at an angle every single day. That way, they'll last much, much longer. Good to know! xoxo

Ah yes! I worked at a flower shop in high school, and that is the one valuable tidbit I still remember to this day. Enjoy them while they last!

I love hydrangeas! and this tip truly works- I had a bunch of ranunculus that I overpaid for and I decided that I was going to make them last forever. I did what he said, and they lasted 3 weeks! Also, I cut the stems under room temp. water and put them in room temp. water (that's a tip from Ina Garten)

Great tip, although I have issues watering my flowers everyday so I probably would not remember to cut them. I had a dream last night that I killed all my orchids. Very very sad dream.

I adore fresh flowers. I planted a sea of wildflowers, sunflowers, cannas, dahlias, and peonies this year, just so I can fill vases with them all Summer long.
My hydrangea bush didn't make it! I bought it a couple years ago in the dead plant section of things they were going to throw away, thinking I could nurse it back to life. Not so much.

i ALWAYS have fresh flowers in the house. it is a must. DEFINITELY makes everything freshen up!
whole foods has great flowers that seem to last a while, and trader joes has great and cheap ones!
tulips, tulips, tulips (in a bunch or singles), lillies, sunflowers, and flowering branches (dogwoods, etc.) are my favorites!
I love hydrangeas. We've got a budding bush in our front garden at the moment. When its in full bloom it looks gorgeous. Thanks for the tip.

Hydrangeas are blooming all over my yard right now. I often cut a bloom or two. If you don't have the time to cut the stems everyday, add a capful of bleach to the water. It acts as a preservative.

Yes! I worked at a flower shop in college for a bit and this absolutely works. Another really good tip is make sure there are no leaves below the surface of the water.
i have fresh tulips sitting on my desk right now. makes a monday much easier when pretty, pink flowers are next to you!
ashley, yes, the party was really, really fun! we served devils-on-horseback (from a friend of mine), pigs-in-blankets, chips, grapes, cheese and crackers, and chocolate-covered almonds! :) xoxo
They drink through their flowers too, so you can dunk their heads in water if they get really floppy. If they are really dehydrated, fill up your kitchen sink with several inches of water and soak them in there. That also works pretty well with cut orchids.

On another fresh flower related tip my Aunt taught me to put a needle through the stem of tulips when they start to wane and that makes them stand up straight again. I tried it and it worked, haven't experimented on other flowers though.

I was once told to do the very same but replace the water and add 1/2 teaspoon of bleach! and 1/2 teaspoon sugar to the new water. Sugar feeds the plant, bleach keeps the water from going yucky. If I've been bought a gorgeous bunch I make the effort to do this and it seems to extend the life.
I had a dinner party this weekend, too! And we still have the flowers, they look so pretty. I really want to have more plants in the house, they completely change the mood.

Love hydrangeas - waiting for my three huge bushes in the garden to come into bloom again with pink and purple flowers. Having cut flowers around the house is one thing I love. Flowers here in the Netherlands are not at all expensive so I can indulge myself quite happily thankfully!
They also dry beautifully if you're into dried flowers. Just hang them upside down and they really keep their shape.

the lilacs in my yard have budded. just another week or so and they will be open. when i was single, i told myself that when i had a home, i would have lilacs in my yard. and the first year we bought our house, i went and got some shoots out of my in-laws yard and planted them. that was 15 years ago, now they are now fully established bush/ trees.
i wish all of the other goals and ideas that i had also were established. things are not terrible, but not exactly the way i had hoped and planned.
i want more lilacs in my yard, so i am going to get some more and plant them this year. at least i know THAT will happen the way i hope.

We have a hydrangea bush, and I just put them in a vase, and leave them be - even after all the water is gone the flowers dry beautifully!

Gorgeous photo. I second (or is it third?) the dunking of the entire hydrangea flower heads when they begin to wilt. I have worked at a couple of florists (& am studying floristry) & this is what we always do & also recommend to customers to spruce up sad looking hydrangeas! They will last so much longer this way x

my daughter used hydrangeas for her wedding. her florist said that to keep them fresh and perky she makes a fresh cut in the stem then pounds the cut edge in powdered alum. she is also a fan of the flower head dunking tip. try dissolving powdered alum in the water that you use to dunk them.

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but I used to be a florist and the best tip for hydrangeas (on top of the cutting the stems/fresh water one) is to put them in very hot water (not boiling, but just under) and they perk up straight away! works for planted hydrangeas in pots too :)
