My darlings, we're back from our California vacation and missing the sunshine! I'm excited to share photos soon (they're all on Alex's iPhone). In the meantime, at the airport on the way home, I picked up a great little book: Eat, Memory, a collection of food essays from the New York Times. (It was edited by Amanda Hesser, who also wrote the awesome Cooking for Mr. Latte.) The essays range from a guy who hates ice cream to a couple's argument over a word game in a Paris restaurant to a chef trying like mad to invent something new. I'd recommend it, if you're in the mood for something fun and yummy. :)
Have you read anything good lately? xo

I'm loving, "The Lacuna" by Barbara Kingsolver.
ReplyDeleteSounds interesting!!! I just picked up "Cleaving" by Julie Powell! I can hardly put it down!!
ReplyDeleteSounds great!
ReplyDeleteI am just reading Incredibly Loud and Extremely Close by Jonathan Safran Foer and I'm loving it! Can't wait to see your Cali pics! :)
XXX
Sounds intersting! I just finished 'The Last Lecture', I was a little late in reading it but WOW.
ReplyDeletethis looks amazing - I'll have to check it out.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading a book of poetry written by maximum security female inmates right now called "Speaking Through the Bars." All of the women have life sentences... It's really interesting.
Eat, Memory is one of my favorites! The blind chef got me.
ReplyDeleteI like the cover of this book! Can't wait to read it.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely adding this to my Barnes and Noble wishlist to purchase asap. Sounds like something I'd really enjoy! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you had a relaxing vacay!
Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn! It's absolutely wonderful.
ReplyDeleteAmanda Hesser?! Didn't she do that adorable food column with the illustrations, is that the Mr. Latte one? LOVE HER! Need this.
ReplyDeleteI need to read this book asap! Not recently, but one of my all time favorite books is "Kitchen Confidential" by Anthony Burdain. Have you read it before, Joanna?
ReplyDeleteHaha, welcome back! (And don't mind my worrywartness from earlier!)
ReplyDeleteThis book looks like it's right up my alley: food + short stories.
i'm really excited about the new book by john irving but if you want to start with irving i would recommend hotel new hempshire
ReplyDeleteI adore Amanda Hesser, so I'll have to check that book out.
ReplyDeleteI just finished reading The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. It's a mystery story, set in northern England in the 1950's. The protagonist (and chief detective!) is an eccentric 11 year old girl, whose chief mode of transportation is a bicycle named Gladys. The book was utterly charming, and I highly recommend it.
(Confession: instead of cleaning the kitchen and bathroom, I read this book all in one sitting last Sunday. That's how good it is!)
ohmygosh- I'm just reading this! So great to read on my morning tube commute. Love the first Paris story with the 'word play game not to be spoken of again' and the orange Tang story! Planning to lend this to my mum and sister-in-law. Hope you had a fab trip.
ReplyDeleteI just read "Lunch in Paris" by Elizabeth Bard (as recommended by a Glamour issue a couple months ago). It was fabulously delicious!
ReplyDeleteohhh this looks great!

Sounds like the best combination for good read, I'm welcoming it to my amazon wish list. :)
ReplyDelete"The Girl Who From the Sky" by Heidi Durrow. A fantastic first novel about a girl who finds herself in Portland, living with her Grandmother, after a tragic family event. Told from the perspective of different characters, it's a touching and well-written read.
ReplyDeleteTake my advice, I'm a librarian!
Hi there,
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to trying some of the books listed; I love finding recommendations for delicious books! Anyway, I am currently reading Bel Canto by Anne Patchett and I recently finished The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery and I would recommend either without hesitation. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is also a fabulous read. I guess I am clearly not current with my reading list.
Kelly
Sounds like a great read. And I'll have to keep an eye out for "The Man Who Ate Everything," too; I love Jeffrey Steingarten's essays! I just finished "Three Cups of Tea" and "Stones Into Schools," about Greg Mortenson's work building schools in rural Pakistan and Afghanistan -- the most inspiring story I've read in years.
ReplyDeleteA few I recently finished and loved... The Remains of the Day, Zeitoun and Little Children. Three very different books, but all wonderful.
ReplyDeleteAnd I second Bel Canto, it's so good!
Okay, I'm intrigued!!
ReplyDeleteah, glad you had a nice trip! welcome back, i always love checking in on this site to see what you've posted throughout the work day :)

ReplyDeleteI'm actually right in the middle of Crime and Punishment right now. Yes, I'm reading it voluntarily. Yes, I am a huge nerd.
Planning on following it up with something comparatively easy. I looooove E.L. Doctorow and still haven't gotten around to reading Homer and Langley, so I'll probably read that next. :-)
oh, yes, mosey!!! i LOVE LOVE LOVE ruth reichl!!! i listened to her books on tape -- she read them herself, which was awesome.
ReplyDeleteJust finished Little Bee by Chris Cleave. AMAZING.

ReplyDeleteMy latest read is not a new release but I had missed it. "Appetite for Life, The Biography of Julia Child" is a wonderful glimpse into life in France in the 40's and 50's as well as the availability of food and prepackaged food in the US in the 60's and 70's, not to mention a beautiful love story. great story of a zest for lifelong learning.

ReplyDeleteI loved this book A year in fashion have you read it?
ReplyDeletehttp://barelyvogue.blogspot.com/
I just finished Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs "And the Hippos were Boiled in Their Tanks". It's a good quick read and lots of good insight to the beginning of the Beat era and NYC near the end of WWII.
ReplyDeleteI just started reading David Sadaris! Brilliant! Best, Connie

I just read Cleaving by Julie Powell. Half way through I'm wondering why am I reading this. It starts off interesting but then I just don't understand the whole affair thing so I did not enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteI just downloaded the Kindle for iPhone app and read 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' since it was free and I had never read it before. I loved it, and just marveled at Oscar Wilde's writing.
ReplyDeleteIn the past two weeks, I have read 2 of Chelsea Handler's books...I find her hilare! I also finished 'The Golden Notebook' by Doris Lessing not long ago.
ReplyDeleteActually, this essay is food-related (for those who've read it) but I just finished "A Room of One's Own," by Virginia Woolf. Lovely essay about women writers and I found it personally, very inspirational as a woman writer.
ReplyDeleteJust started Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel (as you probably know, there has been a lot of buzz about this book, and many subsequent awards). I feel as though I've completely immersed myself in the world of 16th century England and am witnessing the drama firsthand. It's surreal.
ReplyDeleteDanny Meyer's Setting the Table. Reading it is *almost* like eating at one of his restaurants.
ReplyDeleteAnother book to put on my list :).
ReplyDeleteI have just finished reading "Turn of the Screw" by Henry James. A bit of a risque, psychological novella, but quite good! I am now reading "The Girl Who Ate Kalamazoo" by Darrin Doyle.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your recommendation!
