These days, nurseries are looking so amazing! I've been flagging inspirational images, such as the nursery of J.Crew creative director Jenna Lyon's son, above. Aren't the yellow stripes amazing, and who would think to paint a nursery wall black?
A polaroid heart from a grown-up bedroom in Paris...
And sweet details, like the knit blocks in the fireplace, love pillow and teeny yellow boots!
The giant giraffe is amazing, but my eye was immediately drawn to those red frames. What a great way to showcase artwork.
Decorating with maps = inexpensive and inspiring.
This photo is from Moomah's playspace. The white frames mimic a gallery wall, and that friendly bear print is totally amazing. (Does anyone know where to find it? Update: The Moomah bear print is by Jacqueline Schmidt of Screech Owl Design. Thank you, Sarah!)
The shades of blue in this room are lovely and calming, and the Tord Boontje hanging lamp looks magical. What nursery colors or special touches do you like? I'd love to hear... xoxo(Photos from Domino Magazine, Cookie Magazine, Living Etc., Moomah, and others)

Wow, what gorgeous rooms!! Great for inspiration :)
ReplyDeleteI love yellow for a nursery...bright and happy!
Can't wait to see what your nursery ends up looking like!! :)
Ahh these are so inspirational.
ReplyDeleteI don't really like white walls so much though. I guess I'm just stuck in a phase where I'm tired of plain, boring things!
i made the top photo of the striped ceiling and chalkboard paint wall .. my home office! - it looks amazing! .. i got the inspiration when it was published in Domino magazine YEARS ago - i miss Domino! .. great stuff!
ReplyDeleteErika
http://tiptoebutterfly.blogspot.com/
really? i still love white walls, since they showcase art and colorful details so well. but i see what you mean...wallpaper especially can look SO amazing.
ReplyDeletethe red frames are unexpectedly stunning!
ReplyDeleteI remember that nursery with the yellow stripes ! it was domino mag,the most beautiful magazine ever!
ReplyDeleteThe ceiling stripes are amazing, but I wouldn't paint a black wall in a nursery, maybe some other room. Maybe navy, but not black.
Good collection!!
ReplyDeletelove the black wall. how could imagine?
ReplyDeleteI had a hard time finding something mobile-ish that I liked to put above the crib, and I ended up using paper lanterns. They turned out really cute! http://hollienickolls.blogspot.com/2010/03/emmas-room.html
ReplyDeleteall gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteabsolutely love love the polaroid heart!
ReplyDeleteI think Martha's plate rack bookcases, as seen here, are pretty brilliant. A kiddo can pick out the book he wants to read by the picture on the front even before he can read.
ReplyDeletelove the first photo - that's one i haven't seen! i've had the giant giraffe photo saved to the inspiration board for a while... and i'm absolutely committed to decorating with maps! we are still thinking of trying orange in our nursery, but still have 3 months to change our minds! can't wait to see pics of yours!
ReplyDeletejoanna- I was at moomah about 2 months ago and saw some of that amazing artwork! You may want to visit and ask someone that works there. from what I can recall they had info up about the artist's displayed:)
ReplyDeletethat bear is such a happy guy!
From Child Development courses I've taken in college, I learned newborns focus on sharp differences such as white and black. So if I ever have children I definitely want to paint the ceiling with white and black stripes or squares to stimulate their little minds.
ReplyDeleteoooh, thank you, sarah!
ReplyDeleteI love all these ideas. So fun and detailed. Kids dress better and have cooler rooms than me haha. The on e thing I really want is an awesome rocking chair. Old school.
ReplyDeleteoh and look at these! (still stalking that bear...)
ReplyDeletehttp://www.moomah.com/shop/category/prints/
so adorable can't wait to decorate a nursery one day :)
ReplyDeleteLove the crib from the first nursery!! That's on my wish list :)
ReplyDeleteI like the red frames alot, the Love pillow is sweet. Hope you find out where that bear print came from, it's very cool.
Yes!! The giraffe is my favorite! That room is so adorable! xoxo
ReplyDeleteAre you going to have a theme for the baby's room? A friend of mine is having a baby in a matter of weeks and has a cute Muppets-themed room!
Love, love, love the yellow stripes on the ceiling! Worth the crick in the neck!
ReplyDeleteAw they are so sweet and charming!! I'm constantly changing my daughters' room (wall colors, bedding, etc) because we're girls and that's what girls love to do. I painted baby yello when they're baby, then pink, now it's purple. Then I draw flowers or animals. Now they want to go back to pink again. I let them hold a tiny brush and we paint together - it's so much fun.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see your little baby boy's room - it will look amazingly adorable!!
I can't get past that ceiling in the first photo - such work had to have gone into that. It's breathtaking! And I also love those red frames. They're a gorgeous pop of color!
ReplyDeletethese are so amazing! i'd have to say one of my favorite things in nurseries & playrooms is maps & globes. they are beautiful and functional and as you said, inexpensive.
ReplyDeletei love greens, yellows and blues for decorating as well. these colors remind me of being calm & happy...and i would want my baby to feel that way too :)
I've been thinking recently that if I were decorating a nursery, I'd love to use maps, too. Educational and beautiful, plus I hope my kid would want to be an explorer!
ReplyDeleteI love them all ~ and saw the photo heart design in the Jan issue of Marie Clair Idees!! great idea!!
ReplyDeleteOh how I can't wait to see what you two cute kids come up with!
ReplyDeleteThese rooms are so very gorgeous. I love the one for Jenna Lyon's baby! What a lovely nursery!

The nursery from Domino, with the red frames, is so great. I always think of it when friends are having kids. Lovely choices! What a lucky little boy he will be!
ReplyDeleteWow - gorgeous photos. Love the yellow stripes, but I think the third one is my fave. So cute! I would love to do the photo collage above the bed like that, too.
ReplyDeleteI wouldnt mind calling any of these My room
ReplyDeleteNurseries these days are so darling.
ReplyDeleteHere are a few of my favorite: http://designstiles.wordpress.com/2010/02/21/baby-on-the-way/
We are inspired be the first room for our own nursery.
ReplyDeleteAll gorgeous finds. I love love love the LOVE pillow!!
ReplyDeletejoanna - i have a vintage world map on my wall and its my favorite decoration .. .nursey or not its definitely a classy and beautiful way to decorate my wall! i like to imagine myself falling asleep and dreaming of ending up somewhere else on my map!
ReplyDeletei love the polaroid heart idea!! i think i'm going to do that in our bedroom - i've been trying to figure out something to put above our bed. thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeletecan't wait to see what you guys come up with!
ReplyDeleteThese are pure gorgeosity!
ReplyDeleteI'm obsessed with the idea of painting a mural on one wall in a children's room from a classic or modern children's book, like the original illustrations from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Madeline, The Little Prince, or Where the Wild Things Are, the list goes on and on.
beautiful rooms! love that giant giraffe!
ReplyDeleteI like the white lounger look in the decorating with maps underneath storage look, what fun for sleepovers!
ReplyDeleteA great way to be ready and a storage option too!
L.
the yellow stripes are amazing. i don't need a nursery but i think it will look good in other rooms too..
ReplyDeleteAll the nurseries are just beautifully decorated. I love the map on the wall... I have family scattered all over the world so it'd be nice for my future kids to be able to point out where their grandparents and aunts are :)
ReplyDeleteGreat finds Joanna! they are even cute enough for older children and adults.LOL.
ReplyDeletewhen our daughter was born, we rented an apt and weren't allowed to paint so a friend of mine gave me a couple of 'stickers' version of wallpaper that was removable when you moved out without damaging the walls. I'm trying to remember the name of the company that makes them. If I remember I will come back and share.
Saludos,
A Mexican chica living in Europe
I would like to know who made the print too. I bet flora douville could make a bear like that. I have a bear print from her. I love bears. Also, Emilie Boudet made a cool bear. http://www.emilieboudet.com/blog/2009/09/17/lets-dance
ReplyDeleteI'm loving the stripes on the ceiling!
ReplyDeletethey're all so cute! you must be so excited. i can't decide which i like best - the first one with the black wall and yellow ceiling stripes or the one with the big giraffe. that was in domino, right? i love those prints.
ReplyDeletelove all of those!
ReplyDeletehave you seen this one yet from grayhood? perfection!
http://littlelovables.blogspot.com/2009/09/creative-calm-eclectic-modern-nursey.html
These are great inspiration!! I love the bear print.
ReplyDeleteI realize youre expecting a little boy, but this girls nursery is too cute not to check out:
http://ashleyannphotography.com/blog/2009/06/30/entering-the-girl-world-the-nursery/
I'm loving that nurseries are becoming more and more stylish and less cartoon character laden!!! Especially love rooms that look like they could grow with baby. I had a friend who at 12 years old was still fighting her parents to redo her room which had baby Winnie the Pooh wallpaper. Oy.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually liking white walls for that very reason, so much easier to change out the accessories when you want to switch things up a bit.
Love blue. Actually just about anything. But I thought I read that yellow has to be pale (for large swaths like walls) due to stimulation. I'm probably mixing -- or making -- this up.
ReplyDeleteAnyway...
White walls can be fine, especially if you're going to hang a lot of art...that takes care of it. It's like wallpaper-via-wall art.
If you search 'dancing bear' wow you'll come up with a lot of links.
Cheers
Susan & GG
i love the stripes on the wall, but i think the black is too severe for any room ... much less a nursery!
ReplyDeletei really love the idea of decorating a nursery with maps and constellations and animals rather than typical "baby" stuff!
oooh, rachel, good calls!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite room is the first one. I want it for myself! I also miss domino! Ah, that magazine was full of inspiration.
ReplyDeleteAmanda
My daughter's nursery was yellow. Since we're remodling our house, the guest bedroom is going to be a shared nursery for our daughter and son (they're only 15 months apart, so it's not so bad right now. Soon they'll have their own rooms!). I'm painting the walls a smokey green/blue color, and doing their crib beddings in the same patterns, different colors (Edith's crib is more in the white/light family, Eric's gets the slighty darker shades). Doing a shared-gender nursery is tough!
ReplyDeleteJoanna, I make a lot of those little blocks for friends who are having babies (out of organic felt, not knitted). I make floor quilts for the babies to crawl around on, too. Just email me at deannanfox@gmail.com if you'd like some.
I did yellow striped walls before I even say that room in Domino about a year or so ago. But i do have a special spot for a yellow stripe. The pix are not so great but you get the idea: http://www.ohdeedoh.com/ohdeedoh/kids-color-2008-entries/ohdeedoh-kids-color-contest-entry-26-lemon-twist-068378
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of decorating with maps... LOVE that. I would caution against using too much of the yellow paint though if you follow Jenna's lead. I was inspired by this nursery as well and, at 10 weeks pregnant, thought it would be a good idea to paint an ENTIRE ROOM in this color. It is called Yolk for a reason!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.thelilbee.com/2009/03/mellow-yellow.html
I love that first picture, I have it saved in my one-day nursery pictures :)
ReplyDeleteYour inspiration photos awesome!
ReplyDeleteWe did not know Micah's gender which made decorating slightly challenging. Our favorite thing about his nursery is that we found things (rug, art) that were whimsical, but not necessarily "babyish" also, we love our dwell bedding!
http://no-one-thing.blogspot.com/2008/06/as-promisedphotos.html
LOVE these rooms. the baby room is cool.
ReplyDeleteHowever will you choose? Can't wait to see photos of your own nursery (pretty please!)... XO Katie
ReplyDeletethese are great takes on nurseries! i can't wait to see what yours looks like... i love the new take on nurseries, they are real rooms, too! they shoudl reflect your style! thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteSuch wonderful ideas! I love the striped ceiling. It would also keep the newborn's brain interested. The polaroids are too cute too. You are going to have a blast decorating!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love looking at nursery photos. Ohdeedoh has some wonderful inspiration pictures. http://www.ohdeedoh.com
ReplyDeleteOur nursery is Super Mario world themed. We've painted the walls blue and are going to paint the scenery on next. It's starting to really look and feel real.
Let us know what you guys ultimately decide to do and show pictures!
Joanna, I sent you an email regarding the artist:)
ReplyDeletethank you so much, sarah!!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous. I think if you've got enough light black can work really well.
ReplyDeleteI spent about a zillion hours trying to decide how to decorate my son's nursery and then about ten bazillion more trying to decide how to decorate his new room 17 months later (We wanted our study back). I ended up going with mostly yellow and brown in the first room and then I loooved the kid's room in this house and ended up using this paint color.
http://www.designspongeonline.com/2008/05/sneak-peek-jessica-helgerson-interior-design.html
I ended up buying a lot of brown and khaki canvas storage boxes from the Target's Itso line. They were much cheaper than many other "kid" storage boxes out there and they are pretty sturdy. Sadly, I think Target might be phasing this line out.
My husband and I love to fly fish so I found some vintage fly fishing books with awesome drawings and framed some of the drawings. I also ended up framing a lot of cards and little prints that I already had around the house. I have this wrapping paper hanging on his wall and he loves pointing at the apple and yelling, "App!"

They also have a sweet alphabet one

Whew! This is way too long! Have fun!
my husband outdid himself for our son Hayes' nursery this month... he chose everything from the wood paneled walls to the built in closet. you might like?
ReplyDeletehttp://emilyframe.blogspot.com/2010/03/casita-de-ziggy.html
you really picked some fabulous inspiration rooms! my favorite is the fireplace with the "love" pillow rocker. I'd give anything for a wall of built-ins like that in our nursery!
ReplyDeletedeciding how to design our nursery was one of my favorite parts about being pregnant. the sky was the limit! i guess there was a bit of trickiness to it since it's a room that our boy and girl twins are sharing so i couldn't go too pink or too blue, but I think a mix of both (which is what I decided on) ended up working perfectly. I've got to get pictures up so I can share with everyone!
be sure to check out Dazey Chic's etsy shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/dazeychic. Adorable art. I got a few pieces for our nursery.
they are all so gorgeous! how will you ever decide!? :) good luck and congrats on le baby boy!
ReplyDeleteLOVE that striped ceiling... flippin' awesome!

How sad are you that Domino is no longer? That was my absolute favorite magazine. I was actually depressed when I got the issue stating that they were going under. Anyway, I wanted to tell you I am now thoroughly obsessed with Moomah. And you are to blame...in a good way. Oh, and every single picture in this post is my dream nursery/house/decor. It's like you sucked my brain and put the images on the page. I actually have the Living, Etc. with one of the pics in the post. Loved this post!
ReplyDeleteI love that black wall! I have always secretly wanted to paint at least one wall of my home black, but I'm not gutsy enough....yet:)
ReplyDeleteI love that mobile in the first image. Does anyone know where to find it?
ReplyDeletethese are so cute! i love the idea of the black and whitewalls because babies are drawn to contrasting colors! but yellow actually can irritate babies.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see your little nursery - will you show it to us ?
ReplyDeleteC
Someone may have posted this already but almost all the art at Moomah is by Jacqueline Schmidt (or her husband George) of Screech Owl. Jacqueline is Moomah's creative director. She's also incredibly sweet. Some of the artwork is available on the moomah site (not the individual bear though) which would also look incredible in a nursery. There's a great article about the Schmidt's in Feb/mar issue of ReadyMade.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favorite nurseries http://5neals.blogspot.com/2009/07/nursury.html I love the turquoise and yellow, and the little elephant hamper!! Oh how cute!
ReplyDeleteI've always loved that giant giraffe! I found one similar online but couldn't bring myself to spend $100 on it!
ReplyDeleteI've had that first picture saved in "my favorites" for quite awhile too! I don't have a baby, and have a few years before I think about that, but I just love that it is a more sophisticated version of a nursery room. It looks like a great room that the kid could spend a lot of years in without having to bother to buy new grown-up furniture.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see it again!
Bre @ http://theredbungalow.blogspot.com
ooh great post - how exciting to be planning your nursery! Thanks for the Moomah link, we are heading to New York with our boys tomorrow so have added it to our 'must-do' list. Best, Annie
ReplyDeletei love that "love" pillow!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the polaroid heart and the framed wall!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
http://designsbynina.blogspot.com/
I love the bed in the fifth photo, I will be spendin easter decorating a room for my two little boys and would love to build this for them. It has to be a later day project though, but it's definitely going into my inspirations folder :)
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas! We are expecting a baby as well, and we rent so we cannot paint or make permanent changes. I framed some pictures from my favorite children's books, and they make amazing artwork. Some pictures of what I did here:
ReplyDeletehttp://babylux.tumblr.com/post/367572764/good-dog-carl-project
I love those yellow stripes and the black wall! Such a unique & fun idea. For our nursery, we wanted something bright & colorful - especially because we only have a 1 BR apt. The nursery is actually part of the living room. But we used the Union Jack as our inspiration, but changed the colors to bright blue & orange. I'll post a couple of pics on my blog today. Decorating is the fun part, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteWhat gorgeous rooms! I love the yellow stripes on the ceiling!
ReplyDeletei love the striped ceiling! never seen anything like it before -- so clever, esp since the baby's always looking up.
ReplyDeletewow these nurseries are cooler than room!
ReplyDeleteI adore that jcrew lady's nursery- it was in Domino awhile back and I put it in my folder of favorite rooms. My little girl's nursery doesn't look a thing like it- but now I want to redecorate after being reminded about it!
ReplyDeleteI bought a package of Animal Alphabet Cards from Martha Stewart Crafts and decorated the walls of my son's nursery with them. Coupled with antique furnish, they lend the room an old-fashioned quaintness that I love. Now that my dumpling is 18 months, he loves to name all the animals!
ReplyDeleteThat first one is just so perfect and unique. Also loving the colorful LOVE pillow!
ReplyDeleteJ'adore!
ReplyDeleteI am decorating for my baby right now. I LOVE these ideas!
I love 'Moomah's' too - saw this pic for the first time yesterday and saved it right away.
ReplyDeleteLove the way the frames are hung.
