Emma miniseries

Have you been watching Emma, the new PBS miniseries? It started last Sunday night, and it's AMAZING. Emma is so charming and adorable with her gossip and matchmaking, and the show stays really true to the book. And don't worry if you missed the first episode; you can watch it online here. I absolutely love it!

I'm from the uk and I watched the first episode in october and HATED it... I'm a huge fan of romola garai in other movies as well as jane austen, pride and prejudice etc but I thought this version of emma was terrible actually and didn't watch any more episodes, the script is very wooden and all very cliched. just my opinion though! It is very pretty to look at

  20. It is pretty great, isn't it? Although I do think Gwyneth Paltrow made a darn good Emma, I can't resist Jonny Lee Miller. I have loved him ever since he was Sickboy.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I watched it on Tuesday after my Lasik. It was the perfect 'do nothing' movie. Can't wait for the second half!

    Thanks doll,

  27. Jonny Lee Miller as Mr. Knightley is the most inspired casting choice since Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy.

    ReplyDelete
  28. This mini-series is so very good. I caught it a few months ago on the BBC website and am just obsessed. The whole cast is so handsome and I love the story and filming (and costumes and sets...)

I live in NL and have BBC so I was able to watch it in October. I looooved it: great costumes, updated dialogue, fantastic casting, beautiful colors. Whats not to like?

    ReplyDelete

I love this, too! It is the best "Emma" I have seen!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Emma is delightful. It threw me at first because Johnny Lee Miller plays Edmund Bertram in Mansfield Park. I love any mini-series of Jane Austen's work or Dickens' or almost any period piece. So good!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Anonymous11:01 AM

I saw it on BBC a few months ago and I absolutely cringed! It was terribly miscast and the script was appalling. All good actors normally but so wrong for this production. Just terrible!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes, it was on in the UK just before Christmas and I absolutely loved it! The actress playing Emma is ever so sweet in this :) xx

    ReplyDelete
  34. I can't believe I missed it!? I'm one of those freaks without a TV, but will have to check iTunes pronto to see if they have it. Emma is one of my all time favorite books. I remember the wedding you posted about in which they quoted the end of the story---I'm so smitten I think we may do the same in our upcoming nuptials. Thank you for your never ending inspiration Joanna!

  35. Funny you just posted this today, I downloaded it off AppleTV since my husband was out of town last night. It left me giddy! For all Johnny Lee Miller fans, make sure to check him out in Mansfield Park!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ahhh! This looks AMAZING! I adore Emma and all things Jane Austen! I didn't even know this was on so thanks for the tip! I have always preferred Mr. Knightley to many of Austen's men (even Mr. Darcy, I must admit)!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Eeeek! Can't believe I didn't know about this!!

  38. I fell asleep watching this...I'm so glad I'll be able to catch it online! Thanks for sharing :)

  40. Anonymous11:27 AM

This one looks very pretty and I like Romola but was really quite unhappy with this adaptation and thought it not true to the book at all. A couple characters who only get incidental coverage in the book are suddenly pretty big players in the show. Thought the writing was sloppy indeed.

I think the best adaptation of Emma to this day is Clueless.

Johnny Lee Miller is pretty cute howevs.

    I love Jane Austen!!!!!!!
    Another Emma adaptation!!!
    Hurray!!!!!! :) :) :) :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. How in the world did I ever miss this?
    LOVE!!!!
Thanks (and so glad I can catch up!)

    ReplyDelete
  45. I loved it! It's much different than the Kate Beckinsale version I own, but I like it. It might have something to do with Jonny Lee Miller playing Mr. Knightley.

    ReplyDelete
  46. i really enjoyed this series. it's so cute. it also reignited my love for jonny lee miller! the man's still got it!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm not sure if I can watch this version of Emma and knock Gwyneth Paltrow from my mind; the 1996 film is really hard to beat. I like Romola Garai in other films, but I just can't see her as Emma here.

    ReplyDelete
  48. oh, this is such a relief that i can watch it online:)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I can't forget Romola Garai from Atonement. That character made me hate her forever.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Thanks so much for sharing! I don't have tv so I'm so excited we can watch online!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Enjoyed it with the same reservations that many have...but adorable & charming, Emma is not supposed to be...not in the way one thinks. Yikes.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I watched the whole thing online in December. And yes, I'm watching it again! Emma is my favorite Jane Austen novel, and I have liked Romola Garai ever since she was in I Capture the Castle.

I'm trying to remember to watch Masterpiece Theater every week, not just when there's a Jane Austen miniseries on. The shows are always so good, and it makes for such a relaxing Sunday night!

    YAY!!!! I LOVE Jane Austen!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Emma (seriously, that's my actual name)12:48 PM

Ooh no, I couldn't stand it when it was on over here! I usually like Romola Garai but could not understand why she seemed to be playing Emma with constantly bulging eyes. Mr Knightly was just wrong as well - seemed far too young and they set up the whole love-thing between them far too early. Emma is such a hard one to get right, which is a shame.

    ReplyDelete
  59. oooh looks good. thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  60. i love it! totally perfect with a blanket and a cup of tea!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  66. I was so excited when I saw this - I DVRed it immediately. Love PBS!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Austen in any form is comforting, but I actually wasn't completely crazy about this version of Emma. I liked the Paltrow version so much better. Not to be a stickler but some people said it here - I didn't like the way Romola Garai played her. And Johnny Lee Miller was way too young to play Mr. Knightley.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Um...if that's Johnny Lee Miller behind her I am ALL OVER that.

I've crushed on him since Hackers. (He was Angelina Jolie's first husband!)

    ReplyDelete
  69. yes! yes! yes!
this year's masterpiece season looks spectacular!
ohh mr. knightly is so drool worthy!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I saw it when it was on in the UK and it's brilliant! Although I've seen the film adaptation with Gwyneth Paltrow so many times that it was weird seeing other people playing the characters.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Joanna, Mr. Knightley is cute, but I wish he were as cute at Col. Brandon in the last PBS Austen series--swoon!
