  2. Evan and I once had brunch at the Blue Water Grill in Union Square, and sat next to a couple with two Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies.

They've been Evan's favorite dogs ever since!

    So darn cute!

  10. Ok- I was talking about these whiskey stones last night at a party. After I got done explaining how cool they seem, especially for Portlanders who adore whiskey and bourbon so much, the host said "So, you want to buy a rock." It made me laugh- but I still think it seems like a good idea!

  11. karen, i think they only give them in the summer -- but you could always buy two tickets and put a bow on them! :)

  17. Nice list! I would love to read about all your puppy stories if you get one! Though I have to say try petfinder.com for a homeless little guy. You can search by breed.

My guy is very into the new Momofuku cookbook and Bill Simmon's new sports book for anyone out there searching for ideas!

  34. Excellent suggestions all. But as a Rhodesian Ridgeback fan & knowing many...as Alex no doubts know: absolutely not in an apt. Good Lord. Even at my weight, I could saddle one up & go for a DC tour. (They are great with kids, though. Although one in particular is terrified of cats as one of mine put him in his place early in life. Just to get things straight:)

  39. Whew, ridgeback puppies are a handful! Balls of energy do not even begin to describe them! I've been trying to talk my husband into getting a rescue ridgeback who's 3+ years old to keep our ridgeback Lucy company. They are the biggest lap dogs you'll ever see. So sweet, and affectionate-they do love to run (and run) and play. The lack of yard is the only thing stopping us from getting a second!

  40. let me tell you that getting the dog DOES NOT make the cooing go away. after 8.5 years, my hubby is still head-over-heels in love with our dog (as am i)! about 10 times a day he asks me "how freaking cute is she?" and the reality is, she's pretty freaking cute!

jamie oliver is one of my all-time major food crushes...saw him on martha lats week cooking from this book. everything looked delish, as always! hope santa brings this one for me!!! ;)

  43. "A rhodesian ridgeback puppy, since he recently spent an hour googling them and cooing, "Oh, you're just a dog. You're just a sweet dog, aren't you?""

cutest thing i've heard all day!

Ridgeback's are not for people who cannot give the dog serious exercise. I am an ultra-marathoner and I have three Ridgeback's. Even after 60 miles they're still ready to go.

Please, city-dwellers, do the dog a favor and don't adopt one unless you are a serious runner.

  45. Oh I love this, especially the calling cards - I have a bearded, bespectacled boy too {as you can see! ;)} so am sorely tempted...

Loving your gift guides Jo - very unusual and lovely!

  48. The Boilerplate book is not a graphic novel, but a lavishly illustrated (350 images) coffee-table history hardback. This story of a Victorian robot is co-authored by a female and includes issues from the period such as women's voting rights. So, it's not JUST for your husband, you'll enjoy it too!

I just bought the stones for my husband. Thanks for the idea!

  50. THANK YOU for recommending Boilerplate!! I got it as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend because he still has a rather boy-like obsession with robots. We just exchanged gifts (a little early because we won't be together over the holidays) and he was SO excited about it he practically started reading it immediately after opening it - he could have cared less about the rest of gifts (J.Crew, mind you) or whether I liked my gifts... But that was fine by me because he loved it! I'm sooooo happy I came across it on your blog!

    Joanna -

    I love the list.

But please let me suggest that before you get your boyfriend (or anyone) a puppy, you should consult with them first and see if they're ready for the responsibility.

And maybe consider adopting a pet from a shelter before finding one from a breeder or a store.

(Getting a dog was a fantastic idea for my boyfriend and I, but we spent a lot of time talking about it first and now spend a lot of our time taking care of it).

  54. Curious- how do you give the boat tour as a Christmas gift? I'd like to get that for my parents but I went to the website and it doesn't look like they sell gift certificates. I sent them an email to find out.

    Thanks!
