This week, we were lucky enough to visit a class at the Academy of Dance, the official school of the Joffrey Ballet. The girls were achingly beautiful, and we were spellbound as they stretched and practiced. I could have stayed for days. See more photos here.(Photo by Anna Wolf)

I walk right by their studio on my way from the office to the eL (I walk right past that Borders in your picture!) and love when I look up & see them stretching or in class. So graceful & beautiful - always adds a little spring to my step!
ReplyDeleteOh neat! You're in Chicago! Don't forget to stop by La Creperie! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm always in awe of the perseverance it takes to be a ballet dancer. I did ballet, then moved on to tap when I was younger. Unfortunately, the knowledge has since been tucked away in an obsure corner of my mind...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!!
ReplyDeleteWhat an exquisite art form ballet is.
ReplyDeleteWonderful pics!
x
I love ballet NOW, but when I was younger, I HATED it! Shows you how people change...
ReplyDeleteI love ballet, I danced throughout my childhood & teenage years. I miss it.
ReplyDeleteStunning photo... what a studio to practice in!
x
Awesome!! I did ballet for 10 years. I miss it so much.
ReplyDeleteI work just a few blocks away, and when it gets dark the Joffrey turns the lights on in the studio and you can see right in to the classes. I love watching them rehearse.
ReplyDeleteoh so graceful!!!
ReplyDeleteI know that was an amazing day :)
i want a back like that. plus the view isn't bad...
ReplyDeletei wish i was with you...i miss chicago. best place on earth.
if you need a derm while you're there {random, but she's genius with skincare and so celeb}, my friend carolyn jacob is right on michigan ave.
and if you come home looking ten years younger - which means ten years old! - i'll know why!
stay warm and safe travels...
omg gorgeous!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, I want to be a ballet dancer. Is 31 too old to start? Hm.
ReplyDeletebeautiful
ReplyDeleteYou're so lucky! I will be sure to check out the other pictures!
ReplyDeleteI did ballet from age 4 until high school. At the time I was ready to leave, but now I miss it every day. Recently, I started the New York City Ballet workout dvds- it's amazing how much your body remembers!
there is nothing more beautiful than ballet. thank you for these gorgeous photos!
ReplyDeleteThat could have been me had I not given my mother such a fuss...
ReplyDelete;)
Yes, I'm with you, I could watch ballerinas for hours. I've just discovered my boyfriend is actually not adverse to attending a ballet, which is the most amazing thing I could ever ask for! We live in Chicago, but have never seen Joffrey... soon, perhaps!
I'm jealous!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I am completely entranced by and in awe of ballerinas. This is a stunning shot. I totally love your Parisienne blog...so much so, I am going to Bloomies to stop at the YSL counter to sniff sniff sniff!
ReplyDeleteSo Lovely! My 2 yr old daughter is obsessed with ballet and I'm so excited to take her to the Nutcracker this year!!
ReplyDeleteas a child i never wanted to study ballet, but now that i'm older i wish i did. i am so into the whole look- hair up in a bun, deep scoop backs, tights and slippers, all in shades of white, pale pink, and black. so classic.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of being a dancer. Ballet dancers seem like they float, and like they belong in a dream.
ReplyDeleteYou may also like watching "The Company" directed by Robert Altman and starring Neve Campbell. Joffrey Ballet dancers make up the cast and the movie features some moving performances, including one incredible pas de deux with Neve onstage outside in a storm.
ReplyDeleteIs it bad that I still want to be a ballerina when I grow up, even though I'm 30?
ReplyDeleteThose pictures are achingly beautiful.
I'm so fascinated by ballerinas at this level of their career! Their dedication and abilities are astounding...
ReplyDeleteI still want to be a ballerina but I just have to settle for adult classes now...That ship sailed a long time ago!
What a beautiful photograph!
ReplyDeleteAww, this makes me pine for my ballet days again. It almost makes me forget how competitive it was! haha. Intense, but beautiful nonetheless. :)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adore the ballet. I wanted to be a ballerina so much when I was little (I think every little girl goes through that phase). I need to find out if there's anything out here in Southern CA for me to go see...
ReplyDeleteI had a couple of childhood friends who became ABT dancers, and have always been fascinated by the discipline. Something about putting so very many hours of your every day into just one single undivided passion. And such a rare and beautiful thing it is.
ReplyDeletemy former roommate graduated from here...she is so beautiful and dances so gracefully!
ReplyDeleteballerinas always make me so jealous that i'm not that graceful. sadly, not only am i not graceful on the level of a ballerina, but i am a copmlete klutz :(.
ReplyDeleteYou should totally put La Danse by Frederick Wiseman on your must-see list ... you will swoon. I saw it last night at Film Forum and am still giddy.

I've honestly wanted to be a ballerina for my entire life, and have always adored looking at photos of ballerinas. These are stunning! :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photo! It's so peaceful!
ReplyDeletemade me sigh out loud. so very pretty. what a fun day indeed.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was little I wished I'd done ballet... if I tried to stretch like that now I'd break something lol
ReplyDeleteIf you have a chance to see their production of the Nutcracker you HAVE to! Best ever.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful image, beautiful form, and very inspiring. I think ballet classes for the over 30s could be a brilliant idea - yoga for the first decade of 2000 and ballet for the second. What do you think? :)
ReplyDeleteand one and two...I am so tempted to throw my leg up on a table at this moment and STRETCH....
ReplyDeleteStephanie I also saw La Danse at the AFI Festival here in LA. You are right on, it was magical!
ReplyDeleteI don't understand how people can dislike the ballet- I'm with you on how beautiful it is. The lines, the grace; I've cried so many times during them. I'm totally willing to admit to that- some are so sad! And how you can not get caught up in the emotions and wonder is beyond me!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful.
ReplyDeleteAnd ouch pouches!! They are really the best!! Much easier on your feet than sheep wool.
beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWOAH
ReplyDeletelucky you! i grew up in chicago... find a jimmy johns and have a sandwich, they're the best ever, i promise!!! and, if you're looking for a fun, neighborhoodie bar, the wrightwood tap tucked in lincoln park was & is my favorite!!! have a great trip!
ReplyDeletei have always loved the grace of ballerinas! this summer i decided to up and take a ballet class at a local arts center. i know i looked like a long-legged awkward frog, but all the same, it was a bit like a dream come true!
ReplyDeletei should also mention that i am hosting a giveaway on my blog today that i think you would like! you should check it out... especially if you like getting free goodies like me :)
ReplyDeleteI always wished to be as graceful. But alas, I am a klutz. Maybe one can live vicariously through these girls!
ReplyDeleteI danced ballet professionally what seems like a lifetime ago. Ballet pictures make my heart ache for a time where not dancing was as unthinkable as living without breathing
ReplyDeleteI love ballet! I dance modern professionally but still take ballet regularly because I think pointe shoes are the most beautiful thing ever. For any of you who are inspired by this post I encourage you to find a studio in your area that offers an adult ballet class. It's good for posture, grace, and confidence. I occasionally teach an adult ballet class and we always have a blast.
ReplyDeleteI have a photo shoot in two weeks and I'm definitely inspired!
le sigh indeed.
ReplyDeleteif you're still in chicago and have an hour to spare in the evening, i can think of no better way to spend it than at The Violet Hour,http://www.theviolethour.com/. nothing embodies french style to me more then having a great cocktail and nibbling on spice almonds in a candlelit, impeccably decorated room. favorite cocktails include the "juliette and romeo" and "hush and wonder".
Great pictures! I'll always have a special place in my heart for ballet as I used to dance when I was younger. I try to make it to at least one ballet per year (usually around Christmas-it's kind of become a tradition).
ReplyDeleteOh I am so in love with these photos... I adore ballet fashion and anything ballet inspired too :) check out my blog, Jo!

I once had a dream: to be a ballerina.
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this lovely photo. I took ballet from the age of four until 11 and not only did it help me become less of a klutz but it also helped with my poor british circulation! Now that my beloved Nanny is gone I have no-one left who is interested in going to the ballet with me. Sniff
ReplyDeleteI wish I was that flexible..
ReplyDeleteOoh, I wish I can stretch like that and don't end up with dislocated bones! Love the pics!
ReplyDeleteandyquirks.blogspot.com
so stunning!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing these! I am a ballet teacher and my little ones would be so inspired!
ReplyDeletewww.movecreateeducate.blogspot.com
I studied ballet since I was 4. It sure is beautiful. A looot of hard work and missing toe nails!!!
ReplyDeleteI just watched the most amazing documentary yesterday on Russian Ballerina's. It's by Bertrand Normand. The girls are mesmerizing and so inspirational.
ReplyDeleteBallet is so graceful and pretty! ive taken classes but will never have that ballet skill ;)
ReplyDeleteOh how I miss dancing. I love in the article how it says ouch pouches for the feet...thats serious!
ReplyDeleteLucky you! I love watching ballet x
ReplyDeleteI love taking ballet classes and am very inspired by these beautiful images!
ReplyDeleteastridland.blogspot.com
I am so jealous that you got to watch that class! I have been reading your blog forever and I am always inspired!
ReplyDeleteI added you to my blogroll! please check it out

so fun. love, love everything about ballet and would love to visit the Joffrey Ballet school any day!
ReplyDeletewhen I was about 13 years old I took a summer class in photography at an art school...one afternoon we went to the dance class where the ballerinas were practicing and I shot some black and white film that when I developed it reminded me of the degas dancers...I know I must have that film somewhere...I'll have to hunt it down at my parents' house...I'd love to try that again. this is such a gorgeous photo. dancers are so graceful and lithe...there's nothing quite like watching them. they don't look real. something that beautiful and natural-looking although perfectly choreographed could only exist in dreams...sigh...
ReplyDeletejoanna! if you gals are still in chicago, stop by STITCH. it is a few steps down from RSVP and le bouchon ... cute little gifts and whatnots! it's tucked away along the damen strip, but definitely one of the fixtures of the bucktown neighborhood. otherwise, i hope you had a great time in the windy city! it's a wonderful place to call home! come back soon :)
ReplyDeleteI think almost every woman at some point wants to be a ballerina. I've been lucky enough to see "Romeo and Juliet" at the Metropolitan Opera House and it was breathtaking.
ReplyDeleteEven my 20 month old will stop and watch ballet if it's on t.v. Such a gorgeous art form and not one movement is "ugly".
oooh jandra, sounds SO nice!!! we're actually in LA now, but next time! :) joannaxo
ReplyDeleteand amanda, SO cute about your baby!!!
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness i know some of these girls!!!
ReplyDeletetoo cool!
OMG! Love that picture! I used to be a ballerina, and images like this bring back such good memories of dreams left behind. *sigh*
ReplyDelete~ Jen
wow that picture is so graceful!!!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to be a ballerina when I was younger but the parents put me in volley ball instead, (um boo...i mean it was fun, but I never got to wear a tutu).
That was my dream back in the day, but then what little girl, or big girl for that matter, (i haven't given up hope yet) doesn't want to be a ballet dancer???
Olivia
My friend is a Joffrey trainee! She's not in the pics though.
ReplyDeleteso delicate, and lovely. i am jealous
ReplyDeleteOMG, I know! When I was my mom would take me to the ballet. I always left inspired to dance like them. I'd spend the next month twirling and leaping through my house {about as graceful as a frog - dance classes did not help, lol}.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beatiful dance. :)
Ahem, *when I was little* -
ReplyDeleteThis makes me feel guilty about skipping ballet class last week. People say they miss it....Just go back to class it's not a big deal.
ReplyDeleteso beautiful! i'm totally jealous. (i also wish i had ouch pouches when i danced en pointe. we just used lambswool.)
ReplyDeleteI love Ballet! I used to be a ballerina, but I stopped when I went to highschool. I very much regret it now! love your picture btw!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the knowledge has since been tucked away in an obsure corner of my mind... Work from home India
ReplyDeleteI miss ballet... :(

I agree, for the most part, but don’t you feel as if the issue is more complex than that?
