Ballet girls

This week, we were lucky enough to visit a class at the Academy of Dance, the official school of the Joffrey Ballet. The girls were achingly beautiful, and we were spellbound as they stretched and practiced. I could have stayed for days. See more photos here.

  1. I walk right by their studio on my way from the office to the eL (I walk right past that Borders in your picture!) and love when I look up & see them stretching or in class. So graceful & beautiful - always adds a little spring to my step!

  3. I'm always in awe of the perseverance it takes to be a ballet dancer. I did ballet, then moved on to tap when I was younger. Unfortunately, the knowledge has since been tucked away in an obsure corner of my mind...

I did ballet from age 4 until high school. At the time I was ready to leave, but now I miss it every day. Recently, I started the New York City Ballet workout dvds- it's amazing how much your body remembers!

Yes, I'm with you, I could watch ballerinas for hours. I've just discovered my boyfriend is actually not adverse to attending a ballet, which is the most amazing thing I could ever ask for! We live in Chicago, but have never seen Joffrey... soon, perhaps!

You may also like watching "The Company" directed by Robert Altman and starring Neve Campbell. Joffrey Ballet dancers make up the cast and the movie features some moving performances, including one incredible pas de deux with Neve onstage outside in a storm.

  25. I absolutely adore the ballet. I wanted to be a ballerina so much when I was little (I think every little girl goes through that phase). I need to find out if there's anything out here in Southern CA for me to go see...

  26. I had a couple of childhood friends who became ABT dancers, and have always been fascinated by the discipline. Something about putting so very many hours of your every day into just one single undivided passion. And such a rare and beautiful thing it is.

  35. Beautiful image, beautiful form, and very inspiring. I think ballet classes for the over 30s could be a brilliant idea - yoga for the first decade of 2000 and ballet for the second. What do you think? :)

  38. I don't understand how people can dislike the ballet- I'm with you on how beautiful it is. The lines, the grace; I've cried so many times during them. I'm totally willing to admit to that- some are so sad! And how you can not get caught up in the emotions and wonder is beyond me!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Beautiful.

And ouch pouches!! They are really the best!! Much easier on your feet than sheep wool.

  40. lucky you! i grew up in chicago... find a jimmy johns and have a sandwich, they're the best ever, i promise!!! and, if you're looking for a fun, neighborhoodie bar, the wrightwood tap tucked in lincoln park was & is my favorite!!! have a great trip!

  41. i have always loved the grace of ballerinas! this summer i decided to up and take a ballet class at a local arts center. i know i looked like a long-legged awkward frog, but all the same, it was a bit like a dream come true!

  44. I danced ballet professionally what seems like a lifetime ago. Ballet pictures make my heart ache for a time where not dancing was as unthinkable as living without breathing

    ReplyDelete
  45. I love ballet! I dance modern professionally but still take ballet regularly because I think pointe shoes are the most beautiful thing ever. For any of you who are inspired by this post I encourage you to find a studio in your area that offers an adult ballet class. It's good for posture, grace, and confidence. I occasionally teach an adult ballet class and we always have a blast.

I have a photo shoot in two weeks and I'm definitely inspired!

  46. le sigh indeed.
if you're still in chicago and have an hour to spare in the evening, i can think of no better way to spend it than at The Violet Hour,http://www.theviolethour.com/. nothing embodies french style to me more then having a great cocktail and nibbling on spice almonds in a candlelit, impeccably decorated room. favorite cocktails include the "juliette and romeo" and "hush and wonder".

  47. Great pictures! I'll always have a special place in my heart for ballet as I used to dance when I was younger. I try to make it to at least one ballet per year (usually around Christmas-it's kind of become a tradition).

  50. Thank you for posting this lovely photo. I took ballet from the age of four until 11 and not only did it help me become less of a klutz but it also helped with my poor british circulation! Now that my beloved Nanny is gone I have no-one left who is interested in going to the ballet with me. Sniff

  62. when I was about 13 years old I took a summer class in photography at an art school...one afternoon we went to the dance class where the ballerinas were practicing and I shot some black and white film that when I developed it reminded me of the degas dancers...I know I must have that film somewhere...I'll have to hunt it down at my parents' house...I'd love to try that again. this is such a gorgeous photo. dancers are so graceful and lithe...there's nothing quite like watching them. they don't look real. something that beautiful and natural-looking although perfectly choreographed could only exist in dreams...sigh...

  63. joanna! if you gals are still in chicago, stop by STITCH. it is a few steps down from RSVP and le bouchon ... cute little gifts and whatnots! it's tucked away along the damen strip, but definitely one of the fixtures of the bucktown neighborhood. otherwise, i hope you had a great time in the windy city! it's a wonderful place to call home! come back soon :)

  64. I think almost every woman at some point wants to be a ballerina. I've been lucky enough to see "Romeo and Juliet" at the Metropolitan Opera House and it was breathtaking.

Even my 20 month old will stop and watch ballet if it's on t.v. Such a gorgeous art form and not one movement is "ugly".

I wanted to be a ballerina when I was younger but the parents put me in volley ball instead, (um boo...i mean it was fun, but I never got to wear a tutu).
That was my dream back in the day, but then what little girl, or big girl for that matter, (i haven't given up hope yet) doesn't want to be a ballet dancer???

  72. OMG, I know! When I was my mom would take me to the ballet. I always left inspired to dance like them. I'd spend the next month twirling and leaping through my house {about as graceful as a frog - dance classes did not help, lol}.

    Such a beatiful dance. :)
