Breaking News: Gourmet and Cookie Magazines Are Folding...

Oh my goodness, Conde Nast announced this morning that Gourmet and Cookie magazines will be shut down for financial reasons, according to the New York Times. They're both such gorgeous, smart, entertaining and life-affirming magazines, produced by incredibly talented people, and and all us devoted readers will be heartbroken to see them go.

I'm heartbroken.

My mind is boggling. Gourmet is more than a magazine.

I'm trying to shift my thoughts from mourning to supporting whatever future projects the staff takes on.

Carolyn said...

NOOOOOOO! Cookie magazine is my favourite. I so look forward to it's arrival every month. This stinks. There are really no good replacements for Cookie out there either. sigh. I hope Conde Nast reconsiders.

Karin said...

Awww..I've collected Gourmet for years. Sad.

I agree, Gourmet is a legend. The cooking community will be forever at a loss. Don't forget about Modern Bride and Elegant Bride. All 4 are going away!!

Gourmet magazine? That's horrible!

I'm totally stunned. Can't believe they folded gourmet. What an amazing brand, writers, and photographers.

I'm so sad! I love Cookie, and have been a subscriber from the start. But there is a shakedown in media these days thanks to the internet...necessary, I suppose.

Emily said...

Shocked and devastated about Gourmet. How is this possible????

Uggggh, that's such sad news!! I work for a major newspaper and I HATE hearing when any print product goes under. Especially ones as fabulous as these two publications. Sigh.

danacordovadesign said...

So sad...I know from being in the biz myself that it is so tough—especially during these times.

lahmode said...

Wow that really stinks! I love reading Cookie. First Domino...now this!

Sarah said...

What a bummer. I was actually going to give a subscription to Cookie as a Christmas gift.

So Sad! I'm just heartbroken about Gourmet going under :(

This is where the ramifications of going digital come into play in our lives right now. I'm sad about both of these publications and I'm definitely going to hang onto the issues I have laying around my house right now. Even though so many people are online, there's something wonderful/enjoyable about turning the pages and seeing the photos/copy in hand. Good luck to all their staff!

Amanda said...

That's terrible :( What else must we lose with this crappy economy?

Emily said...

How sad. My heart goes out to all the families affected by four magazine titles closing.

Joanna said...

I couldn't agree more with your comments about both mags. Each was beautifully-done and truly spoke to its audience. What is this world coming to?

Laura Trevey said...

I am speechless...

Caroline said...

That is terrible!!! I love Gourmet!!! Your comments are incredibly true and both magazines will truly be missed!!!

Alex said...

That is so, so sad! I'm sorry :(
I had just subscribed, too, so the news is just terrible for everyone all around: the readers, writers, everyone.

When will it end? This has been such a devastating year for the magazine industry. I can't stand to see the demise of anymore of my favorite glossies. :(

I really don't understand why all of these great publications are closing. Particularly when more and more magazines are beginning to sprout up in Europe. It's heart breaking. Where does the buck stop? Because even recession, my husband and I still subscribe to 5 different magazines. We can't afford vacations any more or much lavishness...but we still like to dream dang-it!

plaisirs simples said...

i seriously could cry. these are two AMAZING publications and i know many people at both. ugh just so sad! cookie was my domino replacement for a long time and now i'm going to have to get on both web sites and save images before it goes down!

I am so sad. I love Gourmet. I've just started using the recipe box online and now I'll miss that ton.
Yes, www.lonny.com does make it a bit easier to take. Perhaps an online Gourmet is coming.

Agreed. Heartbreaking!

Amanda said...

That's terrible- it's like magazines are folding left and right now.

I guess it's a sign of the times though- for whatever reasons those magazines no longer produced what the people wanted to read *sigh*

Who next?

gourmet mag is beautiful in every way, i've gleened so much visual inspiration from its glossy pages. darn, i wish this wasn't true!

Susan said...

What this world is coming to, speaking as a cranky "old" lady--whose connex with Gourmet goes back to my GREAT-grandmother--is this--people won't pay. Even when they can--hey, I'm broke & I buy the 'real' thing.

I am so angry about Gourmet, especially. I can't get all het up about Cookie (other than people losing their jobs, of course..if I'd stayed at Business Week...)but Gourmet?

I know you can't really comment because of CN association but I'm fuming. So the G-rated version is: why don't they take Anna Wintour's damn dry-cleaning bill & her sunglasses cleaning wipes & fund Gourmet for one more year?

Well, I must go curate my pantry now. (Thanks, Alex via Jo's comments.)

How insane, soon there will not be any quality creative and informative print sources left.

Can this economy get any worse?

Not Gourmet! Anything but Gourmet... I was just getting the hang of this cooking dinner thing. I will have to start hoarding the issues that Kiwi and I have left on our subscription!

I think I may cry. NO!!!!!! My mother has SHELVES of old gourmet magazines that we refer to countless times. DO NOT FOLD GOURMET!!!!! I was just requesting a gourmet subscription for my birthday, I AM SO SO SAD. Someone rich and capable- PLEASE SAVE GOURMET!!!

Madelyn said...

Not Gourmet! This is so sad.

I remember my first Gourmet subscription a few years out of college, which helped me learn to cook. My mother laughed when I subscribed, reminding me that when I was 12, I told her cooking wasn't going to be a priority when I grew up and started working 'a real job, not as a housewife'. What gall!

My mother has passed away but I smile when I remember her teasing; my daughter and I love to cook together now.
