Mismatched vases

Now that I'm a married lady, I'm feeling the urge to "nest" and spruce up our apartment. (Even organizing closets sounds fun in a weird way.) Recently, I've noticed a lovely new trend around the blog world: mismatched glass vases, each holding one flower. I'd love to have a display like this in the living room, wouldn't you?

See more mismatched vases here, here, here and here.

if i didn't have a curious kitten, i'd be trying this tonight. they always have great little glass vases at flea markets for mere pennies!

Loooove these, and the other ones you linked to. Glass bottles + flowers photograph so well...

Currently, my bottle collection (which only started two weeks ago, mind you) is up to 2! I need to get to a flea market...

The thing with living in a dormitory is there's absolutely no room for interesting things like this. Next year though, I'm all over it!

Stylestance said...

Yes it's such a great look ... somehow separating flowers into individual vases can be more interesting than one bouquet. Maybe that's because we can see/appreciate each flower more?

abigail said...

gorgeous. I've got a whole bunch of glass vases, from old milk bottles to old vials and beakers from a lab. I should pick some flowers from the garden while they last!

Breenuh said...

I agree that this looks really nice, but it seems it would be a lot of work to wash all of the small vases afterward ;.)

When I go to Maine I always look for $1 bottles for my collection and there are plenty of them!

So are really beautiful! What a neat idea -- I actually have a desk in my room right under the window. Sounds like the perfect spot!

ooh, we did this for our wedding centerpieces and the best part about it was keeping the really cool glass vessels to decorate our house with afterward. i actually have a vignette of vintage chemistry laboratory glassware filled with single flowers on our kitchen table right now!

i too love that idea, it just appears thrown together but stunning. eclectic is oh so good!

What a simply classic look. I love it!

Joanna Goddard said...

oooh, ellen, maine sounds amazing for that!

This is so similar to how I created my centrepiece last Thanksgiving - although there were candles involved and some of the vases were coloured. Still, gorgeous.

You are so cute "nesting"! I live those vases. They remind me of the window of this vintage shop in Northern Michigan I used to go to, lots of pretty antiques and vintage glass all lined up in the window. So pretty! Glad you're back and you had a fantastic honeymoon! Congratulations again!

Paulina said...

yaaay!!! Congrats on being a married lady!!! Hope you had a very special day and relaxing honeymoon!!! Your guests posts could not have been anymore special!! they were wonderful!!! Glad to have you back!

Paulina

PS: love those vases!

I think this is a great idea - especially as I have an assortment of mismatched vases on hand. I would like to translate this into something Christmas-y for the holiday season.

Maggie said...

yes, love it. I used to make my mom save cool bottles (mostly from vinegars) to do this sort of thing.

I would! Just clicked into Max Wanger's site for the first time: wow! I could spend the rest of the day perusing it...brilliance.

Its very nice and fresh !! I discover your blog and love it !

yes! I love this look:) now I just need the space for it...the nesting is something that I can never do enough of. I'm constantly trying to reorganize something. in fact, this morning, I literally said to my hubs..I think it's time to revamp the sock drawer. I mean, really? if I had fast forwarded to that moment in my single life I wouldn't have believed that it was me who actually said it. he just laughed at me. yet another reason to love him.

Elisha Lynn said...

lovely! It would look nice with various colored flowers in rainbow order or rainbow bottles with white flowers. I am looking forward to seeing your arrangement!

Kate said...

ah, so so lovely!

Annabelle said...

It's so exciting that you're married now :-) I hope the wedding and honeymoon were great!

I like this new trend; but it seems too fiddly - not effortlessly chic, don't you think?

Erin said...

LOVED this wedding, I've been posting on how you can take wedding decor and turn it into home decor. Love the idea of the nested glass vases too!

Cafe Fashionista said...

This is a brilliant idea - if you don't have cats who manage to get into everything. :(

bekapirwitz said...

i know what you mean about the nesting... i had the urge the other night to apparently stay up until 3:30 in the morning, organizing and sifting through everything! it was mad crazy.
this flower vase image is stunning. i love the way the colors pop out against the dark sky. love it!
i also loooved the posts about a happy marriage while you guys were on your honeymoon.
thanks for sharing and congratulations!

Love it! They make such beautiful centerpieces, and I always find the best ones at thrift shops. Now if only beautiful flowers grew more often in the desert. Hmm...

Maki said...

Yes! Actually I have different types of a flower in the different vases all over the house and it is beautiful...

siescierto said...

Flowers are nice no matter where you put them, these make it seem effortless which is specially lovely.

such a pretty idea!

Yes! I love this trend too. So romantic in a haphazard way. Beautiful table too.

your blog gets better and better! thank you for brightening my day, Joanna! you rock!

What a creative way to use some bottles I have around the house! I love doing something, that costs nothing, but makes a big difference. Thanks for the idea!

Bluebelle said...

This is cute, but I'm not sure I could have it in my house - the moving vases to dust and wash them would be way too much effort! But one day I will be trying something similar on a smaller scale.

Blue Is Bleu said...

They look so pretty all clustered together like that. If I didn't have cats that get into everything, I'd love to have a collection like that in my living room.

Those are so beautiful. Fresh flowers are such a great way to decorate.

I most def would. It's a beautiful look. I'm currently collecting mismatched milk glass candle holders to use for my next soiree!

Deb said...

This sounds so charming! I've recently grown fond of sweet peas--they would probably look great in this arrangement :)

I love this look as well. alas, I have one very naughty kitty who just loves to bat at flowers and toss vases on the floor.

oh goodness to have a house of my own to do this in! i have loved this look for as long as i can remember... it's so chic and casual at the same time.

That would look AMAZING in your living room, jammed with flowers one per. Oh I love it.
On top of your white mantle. You know, you do have access to lots of flowers in your neighbourhood, two or three bunches would do the trick, wouldn't it?

personally, i loooove cleaning out closets. there is something therapeutic about it.

Beautiful! For my wedding flowers, I chose a bunch of mismatched vases, vintage bottles found at thrift shops, and silver mint julep cups. My oh-so-talented Mom made all of my arrangements and they were gorgeous. She missed her true calling. She should have been a florist!

Desiree said...

I love the idea of doing this with wildflowers! Imagine how it would look in a window! Lovely! Too bad the kitties would be knocking them over right and left!

lovely. never thought of this as a florist. i have a great collection of vases now, some left over from my wedding centerpieces, i could make it happen! thanks for the idea, husband may be upset though!

lilyjanestationery said...

What a perfect idea for wildflowers. They never seemed quite right all bunched together in one vase...it was always too organized. I think I'll try this in my kitchen!

what a beautiful photo (and a great idea!) a cluster would look so pretty on our coffee table.

Such a wonderful picture. I look for single flower vases and bottles at the flea market. I usually have 5 or so on the corner of my bathroom sink.
