What's your nickname?

A few months ago, at a dinner party, Alex and I were in a joking debate about one thing or another, and I insisted on my point: "But dolly, dolly!" Suddenly, I realized everyone was quiet. Was it weird that I was calling this bearded, deep-voiced man "dolly"?

Alex's nicknames for me pretty much change with the season. I was "baby" for a long time, then "foxy," then "munchkin," then "dubbas" (no idea), then "dollface," and right now, because of our approaching honeymoon, he's taken to calling me "doll-fahtzio," which he insists means "dollface" in Italian.

What about you guys? What are your nicknames?

  1. My nickname changes pretty much every minute, and I've learned to answer to everything and anything hubby directs my way. These are the most common ones: Dooda, than Tuna, than Tuni, then Tunes, big Tunes, and sometimes, Tuna Fey (because I remind him of Liz Lemon).

  2. My nickname is Molly, my real name is Maureen....don't ask me where it comes from, but sometimes I get called Mo...My blog name and etsy shop name are both from a childhood nickname, Good Golly, Miss Molly

  3. Eeps! your wedding is coming up so soon! How eaciting!

We have so many, I can't even remember them all. I tend to call him whatever just comes out, but it is usually along the lines of boo, bubs, B. He calls me punkin, punkinhead, babe, bee, bee bee, on and on and on.

Love you and alex's. Too cute!

  4. When I was younger, my sister used to call me three different nicknames: Eureka, Ooksie (not sure how to spell this one, but it's pronounced ooh-xs-ee), and Avocado - the latter I'm sure she only used to embarrass me seeing as how she screamed it at the top of her lungs in a crowded store once.

My mom has always called me Angel or, again Ooksie. I'd say that Ooksie is my offical nickname. Sadly, of course. :(

My friends jokingly call me Sleaza. I hated it at first, but now I have embraced it. I am so far from sleezy, so it's kind of funny. It's caught on so much - my friend's mom now calls me Sleaza!

  13. I don't know if it would qualify as a nickname, but people have been calling me Mel a lot lately as opposed to Melissa. Don't quite know where that trend came from...

  14. My husband is Charlie and I am Frankie. The first week we were together, we were sitting on my couch being silly, pretending we were little kids in a sandbox, and I asked him if he'd like to make sandcastles with me LOL! It's ridiculous but it makes us laugh :) Plus we get the chance to be humiliated by this story every time one of us accidentally calls the other by the nickname in public. Fun!

Why do you call him Dolly?

  31. My husband started calling me "October" when we were dating. We started getting pretty serious during that month and while he was working the swing shift, he'd come to house for dinner every night. We'd sit and eat, with the pretty autumnal colors right outside my window. It was then when we fell in love and he's called me "October" ever since.

my nickname has always been Anna Banana or when i was a kid my dad & i would call eachother either "fat" or "ugly". like when he got home from work i would say "hi fat" and he would say "hi ugly!" i just remembered that we did that-- i was probably around 3 or 4... i loved it.

  35. My husband and I share the same nickname - 'Sweet.' We've been calling each other this since we were married, about five years ago now. So it's 'sweet this, and sweet that.' Even when we're mad at each other, it's still 'sweet' but it's pronounced much tighter and sarcastically. If he ever calls me by my given name, it startles me as it makes me feel distanced from him.

My boyfriend calls me Bug. He used to say Love Bug, but dropped off the love part. I like it a lot though.

  42. Where are you going on your honeymoon? Somewhere in Italy, I assume? :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ha, I love that.

I've had very few nicknames and most of them are pretty common.

In my family, I've been called "Sissy" because I'm the oldest girl. I've also been called the usual nicknames by the rents, like pumpkin and sweetie. Ha, an uncle used to call me "Grandma Willy" when I was very little. Have absolutely no clue where that came from.

In past relationships I've been called "Odi" like the dog from Garfield. Yeah, doesn't seem flattering, but at the time I thought it was adorable. Also, most commonly, "babe" by a friend of mine. But he calls everyone that so it's not specific to myself.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Awesome post! I can't stop calling my children "Pumpkin." Hasley was a nickname given to me by a friend years ago (he put together my first name, Leslie, w/ my last names and mixed them up a bit) and I love it.

  45. i've been called cupcake, sparker, and grandma, but i'm starting to shed that one!

From my husband, I get Sweet Pea, Shnookie, and Lover.

  47. I never really end up with a nickname, sometimes I get called AH! because those are my initals or Eye-Bees because that's what I call eye balls but those are rarely used. I call my boyfriend Meatball (he's Italian) and CPG (his initials).

  48. My nickname since I was in 7th grade has been Ace. Most of my teachers through college and high school have called me Ace. Most of my friends know me as Ace and in fact at my high school graduation they called me as Ace. It all started because people would always mispronounce my name, Aislinn(pronounced Ashlinn), as Acelinn. So it stuck. My mom though calls me Ash and my ex always called me Bella which he said is what italians call their girlfriends, he is italian.

    ReplyDelete
  49. My name is Madison - which is apparently too long for some people!! Haha, I have so many nicknames: Madi, Madz, Madsey, Mad, M, Emma (?), George, Lamb 1/2, Madzirlinkski and even Zirlinkski!

My name is Anastasiya so mine are: Nastya, Nastenka, Nastiusha, and my favorite Nastenok (rhymes with kitten in Russian).
His name is Oleg so I call him: Olezhka, Olezhechka, Olezhik, and my angel.

My boyfriend and have a slew of nicknames in our arsenal. Some of my friends call me Cokes or Coco, he's picked them up too. Along with Baby, Cokie, CokieMokie, Schmoosh, and the most recently-created: Mocol. Yeah, I don't know where that one came from.

  57. Well, most often I hear baby, boo, love, babe... things along those lines... But every once in a while I hear E-money, pat-rice (he thinks he's funny messing with my middle name) and E. McG.... I think those are his gangsta names for me...

    ReplyDelete
  58. What a sweet post! You two look beautiful together! =)

I call my boyfriend bunny for some reason...and he calls me muffin or variations thereof. =)

Maybe the muffin nickname is inspired by this video? We both find it hilarious, but yes.

  59. My name is Sabrina, and I'm called Brina to my family and many of my friends--which I quite like. My family also sometimes calls me Breener or Breener Reener--both twists on my nickname which are silly but kind of embarrassing in front of strangers...

Sometimes people try to call me Sabz, and I reallllly am not a fan of that. I try to nip it right in the bud if someone tries it!

My boyfriend simply calls me Sweetie, which I like because it's more personal than Babe but not as sickly sweet as Baby (which only my mom and best friend may call me ever).

  60. My boyfriend always comes up with new nicknames for me. ... His latest favorite is Penguin ... but hes called me Chimichanga (I don't know how to spell it ... Like the food haha ...), Pumpernickel, Munchkin ... I don't know where he gets these from. I just call him baby haha ...

So I am posting a comment for the first time (even though I read your blog religiously)...yikes! I'm horribly nervous that mine wont be witty or clever but I couldn't resist since my husband and I have quite a few nicknames as well of which are well rather ridiculous but we love them! I call him "Silly, sills, goose, and doodie (I know gross, but when you say it very sweet :)). He calls me babe, jules, queen (hee hee...no, not really the last one).

  63. my boyfriend calls me "baby" and it's the only time that I haven't been totally grossed out by that term. usually it just sounds so tacky, but he could probably call me anything and it'd make my heart skip.

occasionally I jokingly call him "babe" because when he met me I lived in Los Angeles and we kid about me being a California girl.

  64. My nickname is Burgaloo. My name is Danielle, yet all my friends call me Dee. My boyfriend started calling me Dz's Burger and then the Dz's was dropped and for a period of time I was just Burger. Then basketball playoffs were on and I developed a crush on player named Hedo Turkoglu. My boyfriend turned Burger into Burgaloo to sound similar to Turkoglu. I call my boyfriend Fry.

  65. My husband and I used to be anti-pet names. Then we jokingly started calling one another snuggle bunny. Then it morphed to Bunnie. And so it is, we have called each other Bunnie for seven years. It sickens people to the highest degree!

    ReplyDelete
  69. we have almost too many to list! if we should ever separate (god forbid)we'll be left with our first names. all the others are taken.

    ReplyDelete
  70. My mom used to call me Munchkin when I was a toddler, too. But the one that stuck was "Muffy" which has over the years evolved into "Muff". My husband now uses "Muff" as well, only because he finds it so funny.
"Muffy" conjures either '80s prep school girls or upper East Side matrons, and I am the farthest thing from a Muffy you'll ever see. That said, I'm rather fond of it.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Ha! My husband's nicknames for me change all the time and as one reader wrote on here I basically just know that he's talking to me he calls them out. Usually they come out when he comes home from work: I say: "Hi cutes!" (my name for him) and he responds with any one of the following: "Hi: ..." "Jim", "Jimbob", "chips", "tips", "tipsheet", "chomper", "chomps" -- really I have no idea where he comes up with this stuff... there are many more but I won't bore you ;)

  72. Years ago, whilst perusing a friend's bookcase during a dinner party, my husband came across a Celtic book of names in which he discovered the meaning of my name to be "Beloved Elf". So I have been "Elf" ever since.

Of course, my father affectionately called me 'knothead", so Elf is much more preferable indeed.

  96. What an adorable post! It seems like my husband + I only call each other by nicknames now, because whenever we actually say one another's real name, it sounds odd. But our nicknames aren't nearly as creative as yours. I'll try dolly sometime and see what happens.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I call my darling "boop boop" and he's taken to calling me "boop troop". Don't ask, it just is. haha but I do love best it when he calls me sweetheart! <3

  98. We call each other Schmoopy. It's from an episode of Seinfeld. It started as a joke and stuck. Together we are The Schmoops. We have variations on it: Schmoopus, Shoompa Loompa, Schmoopy my love etc...

    ReplyDelete
  99. My husband and I tend to just use our names. This is unfathomable to his parents who call each other Tops. Not as in "you're tops!," but as in top burger, a menu item from the diner in which they got engaged.

It does make Christmas confusing: to tops, from tops.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Nicknames - got to love 'em. Between the future husband and I, the one which has stuck the longest for me is 'BIRDIE' (inspired by this small fantail bird which followed us one day along a hike in New Zealand) and for the future husband it is 'DIG' - because he makes a living digging and cleaning up dirty soil.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I love nicknames.

My Dad never called me by my given name (Kathryn), he always called me Fritzi.
"Fritzi, you're wanted on the horn!"

My husband calls me Kitty, Kitty-cakes, Kitty-muffin, Muffin-cakes.

I had an ex-boyfriend that called me Minky.

I call my husband my little HOT DOG.

    love this,
    Fritzi Marie aka Kat

  102. Lucas and I call eachother "Willis" because we would always say "Whatchu talkin' about Willis?" So random but now it's just Willis for eachother.

Sometimes we call eachother LB (Loverboy) and LG (Lovergirl) too...

    So cheesy - I know...

    ReplyDelete
  103. I worked at a camp where we all had names and mine was Tex. I had friends called Hoopla, Munchkin, Trouble, Tornado, etc.

There's also lots of play on my name like clairebear or clarabelle.

  104. Oh, you guys are just too adorable! My hub sometimes calls me "cakes" short for "bitchcakes" (as in "I don't know what I did to upset her, but she went all bitchcakes"). I don't really have a nickname for my husband, although he has kind of developed the nickname "Mr. Cheese" based on my blog name.

    ReplyDelete

  106. I like calling everyone "Toonces" as in Toonces the Driving Cat.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I have a double name, so I've been AC to most of my family and even coworkers, but I'm Claire Bear to my hubby. I like nicknames but oddly don't really have one for him. My sister and some of my friends call me Cenna, from a high-school incident where my name was bizarrely misspelled on the back of a Key Club t-shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Hahaha Dolly is an adorable nickname. My big sister has called me "Dollface" since I was a little girl. I had such pale skin, and a round face, that I looked like a porcelain doll. I just call my boyfriend "babe" -- so unoriginal... I know.

  109. Holy moly, have I got a LOAD of nicknames for my beau, and he answers to every ONE of them. My favorites are as follows: Hammie ( hi middle name is Cunningham), Beetlefeet, Butterbean, Sugar Britches, HeartBeep, Peanut, Peanut Butter, Gosh, Joshmo, Baby, Beatbox, and Helen (for when he's being whiney).

  110. My boyfriend just proposed to me on Saturday (hooray!), so currently our nickname for each other is "FAY-unce" (a dumbed-down phonetic cheesy version of "Fiancé"). Right now there's a whole lot of "Hey, Fay-unce" or "I heart my Fay-unce in the FACE" phrases floating around right now. The sappiness will wear off eventually, I promise.

Before that I was Kelsipants (my name is Kelsi), Kelsi-Pants-Face-Head, Gorgeous, Schmoopy, Oosh A Boo Boo, or sometimes just plain ol' Pants.

I call him Ryanpants (what's with the pants?), Mr. Ryan, Muffin Cup, Pookie-Bear-Muffin-Face-Head, and Rrrrrrryan with a rolled "R" like a Russian woman. LOTS of these stem from inside jokes.

I also had nicknames in school: Oscar (after a gold metallic pen exploded all over me and I looked like the award) and Rogue (from the X-Men comics, due to a crazy hair dye job).

  111. I never thought I was a nick-namey person till I got married and found myself head over heals in love.

I call him goofy and he calls me babe. Sometimes I call him babe back.

My sister and I call each other 'crackie'. No clue why...

    ReplyDelete
  112. goodness, i have a few... most of which are just plain strange: rachel (a friend insisted i didn't look like a natalie, but more like a rachel), nat, natti, natti-pants, nal pal, lalee, pasqualina (little easter in italian), boo boo (i'm ridiculously clumsy), dutchess, sis/sissy, two (my first college roommate was also natalie, so i was dubbed 'two' to tell the difference), tony (as in blair), and nat sherman (apparently a really good brand of cigar).

    ReplyDelete
  113. Embarassingly, I am 'honey bear' and its constantly used in public. Really I don't know who its more embarassing for really, me or the very serious looking banker who's mouth it comes out of...

    ReplyDelete
  114. our usual is babe. But he also likes to call me White Pants (bc he likes these white pants i wore recently), along with Lizard and BossWoman

    ReplyDelete
  115. I call my Alex a whole bunch of pet-names: hunnie, papa, daddy, PapaBear, baby, Big Sexy Man, babe, sweetie, The Boy... and the list goes on.

Clearly, I find delight in mortifying him! But he's always a good sport and doesn't seem to mind when the cute nicknames come out in public or among friends. Plus, he has plenty for me, too! (MamaBear is an obvious example)

But calling him Dolly?? So cute, Joanna!

    ReplyDelete
  116. I call my husband Princess Pea every morning when I wake him up.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I was schmookielumps once upon a time, but now my husband mostly calls me kiddo. Because I'm a year younger, and he's approaching thirty. Too cute.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Mom has called me Punkie ever since I was an infant. Dad calls me Bunny to this day (he says I have a bunny nose . . I disagree). As an adult, I try to keep it to Abby or Abigail- I work with refugees and they are so confused by nicknames!

Dollface in Italian is "Pupetta", pronounced poo-pet-tah.

My boyfriend calls me Boots (when wearing Uggs), schmoops (when we first started dating), Hunny (anytime really, its weird to hear him call me by my first name), and Bum.

    ReplyDelete
  123. My nicknames are basically G, Gi or Giz - which I know is terrible-surrounding in the States or Canada but thankfully here, it's acceptable =)

Doll is bambola in Italian which is a very cute nickname to have actually. So he could call you faccia da bambola (face of a doll/dollface) but it's a bit long I think. Bambola alone is sufficient!

    ReplyDelete

  129. Oh, how nice is to be 130 person, who comments your amazing blog. So, I must admit that your husband-to-be nicknames are simply sweet. My boyfriend has been calling me "kitty" for last few weeks, but it gonna change in a minute into something else, i think. Nicknames are so cute and funny. Love!

  141. Faccio is face in Italian. Doll is bambola -- when I was in Italy, the guys I got to know really well called me "Bambolina" - or little doll.

I call my boyfriend "Jon-boy" but it's started just being "boy"... "hey Boy, you're cute, you know that?" or River...because once he starts talking, he can't stop...like a river.
He keeps trying to find the perfect one for me. Nothing quite sticks yet, so I have many.

    ReplyDelete
  142. I call my hubby "handsome" and he calls me "beautiful"...awe ;)

    ReplyDelete
  143. Sometimes he says, "Morning beautiful!" But really, his nickname for me is Floss. I asked him if it referred to candy floss or dental floss (he's an avid flosser) but he just grins and says it's something his dad would call his mum, though it's not her name. I've just started calling him Flick, just because I like the sound of Flick and Floss. Or if I'm teasing him, I shout, "Oi TWGWAG!" (pronounced twigwag), an acronym he devised to mock himself. Tall White Guy With Asian Girlfriend.

    ReplyDelete
  144. My boyfriend and I, unfortunately for anyone within earshot, call each other "Bum." I have no idea why. Also "babe" or "favorite," but mostly just "bum."

My boyfriend started calling me Homey when we first started dating. After that we started calling eachother baby, with as much emphasis on the word as possible.
    "Ready to go, BABY?"
I think we both felt a little weird about pet names because we were friends for so long, so our solution was to give eachother jokey names.

    ReplyDelete

  159. my boyfriend is the nick name master. I sometimes call him sawyer to make fun of him. But other than that I have no nickname for him at all except for hon and we've been together for 4 years. I guess I am not very original when it comes to nicknames. I just can't think of a good one for him, I suppose I always thought one would just come at the right time but it hasn't yet.

My boyfriend calls me bear mostly, but others include wuggles, snuggles, mommy ?, wugga, wugga bear, snuggle bear, you get the idea.

my bf nicknames me moïno, or moïni (pronounced something like mo-ee-noh or mo-ee-nee), which is derived from moineau, which means sparrow in french! but he's restrained enough not to call me that too much in public, how nice of him!
on the other hand, my main nickname for him is gri (pronounced gree), which is just a contraction of his first name (gregory). The shameful part is that i secretely (ie: in my head) started calling him that before we started dating because i already liked him so much!
his other nickname is very man friendly, as its "mon loup", which means "my wolf": strangely enough, he loves it!
