Chanel No. 5

My friend Caroline and I went perfume shopping this week (as a sidenote, she wore her ponytail ever-so-slightly to one side, which was so chic), and we visited a fancy New York perfumery. But in the end, the scent we both liked best was Chanel No. 5. Some people say it smells like a grandma, but, to me, it feels feminine, floral and beautiful. Coco Chanel wanted "a woman’s fragrance that smells like woman," and I think she did just that.

Which perfume to you wear?

P.S. A bottle of Chanel No. 5 is sold worldwide every 30 seconds, says Wikipedia!

  2. For years my dad would buy my mum Chanel No. 19, and then one year he bought Chanel No. 5. I asked him why, and he said "As your mother's age goes up, I thought it'd be best if the number on her perfume went down". LOL!!! He's adorable :)

  12. I love Chanel No. 5. It reminds me of Marilyn Monroe (she said it was the only thing she wore to bed) - it's iconic. Lately, however, I like Givenchy Very Irresistible.

  13. I love Chanel No.5 in the bottle, but it smells awful on me! Right now I'm wearing Vera Wang Rock Princess, but I switch it up all the time! It's more fun to have a variety. The next perfume I'm dying to try is Miss Dior Cherie.

  14. I have always been a Channel #5 girl. It is my signature scent-wearing it today. Sometimes in the summer I do like to switch it up with Nars Monoi Body Oil or Egyptian Goddess body oil. But I will come back mon cheri.

Now I alternate between Coco Chanel Mademoiselle and Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely.

  18. I love anything with floral notes. And I am also a sucker for a pretty bottle.

  19. Personally I love earthy, musky, vanilla scents for fall and winter, I go with Burberry Brit because it isn't over powering. During the summer I rarely wear perfume, but I wish I could find something with a honeysuckle scent.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yikes. I'm in the 'smells like a grandma' category. I have tried to love it, I really have. I wear coco mademoiselle in the fall and winter and chanel change in the spring and summer.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm a Jo Malone kind of girl (my Dad started buying them for me for special occasions a few years ago and now I'm hooked!)

I love most all of her scents because she has quite a range - Lime Basil is a very cool take on a citrus and I love it, but for something a little more girly I like pink grapefruit or orange blossom, lastly I use vetyver for a spicy, sexy scent. I'm sure the others are great, too!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Chanel No. 5 is also my grandma's sent of choice...the parcels she sends at Christmas even open with a heady waft of the stuff. These days I wear Lancome Oui. It smells fresh and cheerful without being too perfumish for me.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I usually wear L'Air de Rien by Miller Harris or En Passant from Frenderic Malle but I always have a bottle of Chanel No5 as backup. I was living in Florence on my 21st birthday but my mum sent me a bottle of Chanel No5. I'll always remember opening it on a sun drenched bridge - it was such a perfect 21st postal pressie. I still wear it when I need a bit of extra encouragement.

  35. This was such a brilliant post as it has garnered all this revealing information about scents :) I have never worn Chanel 5 - perhaps one has to have acquired a certain something before wearing it? I like Estee Lauder's Intuition - that works on me. And Chanel Chance. But here's a question. Do you think it is important to find or explore new scents for our changing years/ seasons/ experiences? (assuming one hasn't 'found' one's own scent). And what do people do with their old bottles of scent? Throw or keep?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I've been wanting to signature-scent shopping for a while! Every time we feature a new perfume in the mag, I think "Ooh! I want!"

I tried out a new Sisley fragrance last winter that was so subtle and sweet, I just might stick with that one.

    ReplyDelete
  37. i really tried to like Chanel No. 5 because the thought of it seems so lovely, but in the end it was just too heavy for me.

My absolute favorite is Very Irresistible Givenchy -- it's kind of light and florally; very pretty!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I always have a bottle of it on display because it is so beautiful, glamorous and iconic. BUT sadly I can't wear it, I just don't love it. I wear Cherry Blossom by Guerlain. I combine it with Laura Mercier's almond coconut lotion and it is divine bliss.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I like the smell of Chanel No.5 in the bottle, but it doesn't smell good ON me. I usually wear Tuscany by Estee Lauder. I've been wearing it since I was 18. I throw in some Realities (Liz Claiborne) to mix it up.

I am an absolute slave to Coco Chanel Mademoiselle... So elegant and young. When I wear it, I truly feel like Madame Chanel herself...
Lately, however, I've been excited to finish off my bottle so that I can go ahead and buy my newest favorite. I smelled Miss Dior Cherie in a magazine, and fell in love. It's wonderful, just wonderful.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I personally find Chanel No 5 really unappealing and grandmotherly. But those are just my nosebuds. =)

I wear Angel Innocent by Thierry Mugler. It's light and delicate with citrus undertones.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I always loved Oscar de la Renta..until I got together with my sweetie Richard. It makes him sneeze!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Chanel No 5! And people ask me all the time what I wear - it responds so differently with each woman - and our uniqueness is key!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I almost never wear perfume, but when I do it's Chanel Coco Mademoiselle. I only wear it when I'm going to a relatively fancy place or to a social gathering with people I don't know. I get very nervous with new people, and wearing it always makes me feel like I've got a chic little shield to keep me safe.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I like Chanel No. 5! I wear Clinique Happy Heart and love it. It gives me instant energy and happiness because of all the citrus, and it makes me feel girly because of the florals.

24 Faubourg by Hermes. I'm planning my next perfume purchase, the Pamplemousse Rose scent, also by Hermes. I like the idea of Chanel No. 5, but it's a bit too heavy for me.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Chanel No. 5 is a bit too strong for me as well. But I wear and love Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle

    ReplyDelete
  53. I am OBSESSED with fragrance. It's truly an art form that I feel most people don't really pay attention to. I used to stick to only one scent as I wanted to have a "signature", but then I realized that that's boring. Why limit myself when there is so much beauty to experience?

I adore Frederic Malle's L'Eau d'Hiver (wearing it today, actually), L'Artisan's Dzing, and my favorite Chanel is Cuir de Russie, a gorgeous leather. I really need to do another perfume post on my blog.....

A perennial favorite is Estee Lauder's Paradise, and on a girls-gone-mild heartbreak vacation (my jilted best friend's honeymoon), a very sauve, dancing Latin man told me I smelled like "cherries and strawberries" when wearing it. For fun, I bought it upon return at a duty free shop for my girl. She soon met her new-and-improved fiance' when wearing it for luck!

  55. FOR ME ITS BETWEEN MARC JACOBS DAISY OR DIOR CHERIE OR THE BRIGHT PINCK CHANEL ONE. I LIKE THE YOUNG LIGHT FLORAL ONES

  56. I love Chanel No. 5 but it is to strong me for me. It reminds me of my mother and grandmother... classy.

Chanel No. 5 was the first fragrance from Parisian couturier Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, and has been on sale continuously since its introduction in 1921. It has been described as "the world's most legendary fragrance", and remains the company's most famous perfume.

"If it had been worn by somebody with no chic it would never have become a style."

Movie star Marilyn Monroe's endorsement of the brand is said to have contributed to its popularity. In 1953, when asked what she wore in bed, Monroe famously replied, "Why, Chanel No. 5, of course." Chanel herself is quoted as saying, "A woman should wear fragrance wherever she expects to be kissed." ~ Wikipedia

  60. My mom gave me her bottle of Chanel No5 and I LOVE it. I also like to wear J'adore!

    ReplyDelete
  61. For me, Chanel No.5 Eau Première is my absolute favorite... it's everything I've ever hoped for in a perfume, and not too strong... It's the only perfume I can stand all day... maybe with the exception of L'Occitane Verbena....

    ReplyDelete
  62. I have several favourites: Agent Provocateur, Hermes Terre (for men but gorgeous), Shalimar, Mitsouko and L'Heure Bleu (all those early Guerlains are wonderful IMHO). Scent can make a even a jeans and T-shirt day extra-special.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Coco Madamoiselle. I knows its a lot sweeter smelling than No. 5, but I really like the way it smells on me.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I have a bit of a perfume obsession! I collect them because I love to try new ones all the time (smell might be my favorite sense). Right now I'm working my way through a Ralph Lauren sample. I also tend to gravitate toward hard-to-find or limited edition, and then I fall in love with them and can't get them (i.e. Aura Sciences scents made for Victoria's Secret).

There is something to be said for having a signature scent, however. Mine, the first perfume I wore, is Estee Lauder Pleasures. My boyfriend finds it so familiar he doesn't like when I wear anything else! My second sig scent is Passion Flower by Lily Bermuda (here I go with the hard-to-find, although you can order it off the Web site).

  65. Summers in the desert call for Bobby Brown Beach, but for the rest of the year it's Balmain all the way. I love the clean, powdery scent, and the bottle's top reminds me of a disco ball :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. my signature scent is Clinique Happy Heart - lots of GUYS asks me, what this scent is :) a former boyfriend told me it is like diesel oil in terms of TURNING him ON.
my husband likes it a lot, as well. so i bought him Clinique Happy for Men for his bday. also, i had a travel size of Clinique Happy To Be - which does not beat Happy Hart - but i always took it with me for our travels, and he loved my TRAVEL scent, as well.

i also liked Manifesto from Isabella Rosselini, and wore Angel by Thierry Mugler for several years. but then my Dad bought me Happy Heart, and it was love at first sight (smell).

  74. I love Coco Madmoiselle and Daisy.

  75. No 5 is great and I wear it often and people often compliment me on it and are surprised to find out it is No5. I think it depends on your body chemistry how the perfume smells to others.
No % is also a great 'layering' perfume. Works well in combination with other scents.

  87. I have 3: Miss Dior Cherie, Daisy by Marc Jacobs, and Chance Chanel. I wear Daisy for work and normal stuff, Miss Dior Cherie is for dinner and going out with my boyfriend, and Chanel is for really special occasions like anniversary celebrations and weddings! :)

Nina by Nina Ricci is another amazing perfume I've been using a lot, the bad thing is it doesn't stay on for too long.

Perfume definitely adds a nice touch, I feel feminine and dressed up in a way. Not to mention that it can be a trademark.

  130. Oh, I love you Chanel fragrances. Of course I wear N5. And also N19, Chance En Fraiche. Cristalle.

    Oh Cristalle.

Best in eau de toilette for me as to remain subtle and soft on my skin.

And I never wear any other brands. Chanel is the very best.

  131. Oh my gosh. I totally agree. It smells so classic and feminine to me. Timeless really.

  133. I adore Poppy by Coach, but usually for special occasions. My everyday scents are Malaia by Hollister (idk why but my chemistry mixes really well with that one) and Hastings Blush by Gilly Hicks (body spray with some class)
