The Uniform Project

This May, Brooklyn designer Sheena Matheiken made the bold decision to wear only one dress for an entire year. Every day she reinvents her look with layers and accessories, most of which are vintage, handmade or hand-me-downs. Doesn't she look amazing?

The Uniform Project is also a yearlong fundraiser for the Akanksha Foundation, a grassroots movement that is revolutionizing education in India.

very cool styling.

This is great. I'm a huge advocate for accessorizing. That's where I spend my money on good basic pieces then switch it up with scarves, hats, shoes, jewelry, etc. Great piece!

GiDu said...

Wow, this is awesome. Even though she is wearing the same basic piece, each one is uniquely different. I love it!

she's not the first to do something like this-- look up Andrea Zittel.

adorable! AND impressive!
<3 love it.

what an insane project! if only i had this mindset with my clothes.

Wow, what fabulous styling! I love her creativity. It would take a lot of self-control to confine myself to one basic piece for 365 days. One thought that came to mind though: Is the dress washable? Or would she have had to dry clean this dress over a period of a year??

Melissa said...

That is something I'd never think of...I love how she was able to reinvent the same dress every day!

I wish every little girl around the world had the "Minnie Mouse" dress as an everyday uniform for a year.
Could you imagine a closet lined with nothing but "Minnie Mouse"...?! ;P

i saw this on jamaica's site (http://jamaica.typepad.com/jamaica/2009/06/the-uniform-project.html). Anyhow, I love it. I wish I had known about it when I was wearing uniforms in junior high!!

I agree - great style. Inspires me to have only a dozen or so things hanging in the closet and drawers full of accessories.

Joanna said...

That's some serious creativity right there.

Sheena is too cool! I love her idea, the fact that it's a fundraiser, and the looks she has put together are just fantastic. The Uniform Project is an easy site to get hooked on!

P.S. I posted an update of my wedding plans on my blog if you'd like to check it out :)

I absolutely love this idea. Since I'm about to go on an around-the-world trip, I am trying to figure out how to be practical about dressing, while still trying to look nice. This girl is such an inspiration... now if only I could be this inventive...

first of all, this designer is stinking adorable and i had no idea that was the same dress until i read your post. amazing and all for a good cause (double points).

This is like the coolest project ever - and perfect for the girl on a budget! :)

That's awesome. BUT, an old TF of mine - and now assistant prof at Vassar - has been doing a very similar thing for 5+ years. He does themes - one year as a zebra, a year as Courbet, another all in pink, etc.

Dream Sequins said...

Does she just have multiples of the same dress? I'd imagine that wearing the same dress without cleaning would be fragrant for others. Hee hee. Generally, this project is a nice showcase for the accessories. They really transform an outfit in wonderful ways.

Desiree Fawn said...

amazing!!
what fab. accessories :D

Tina said...

fantastic!!! i wish i could do this...would save lots of time putting clothes on in the morning, taking them off, throwing them on the chair, trying again...

Lauren K said...

As a recent college graduate and having just entered the workforce, I feel like I'm doing this every day too. Except of course, far less brilliantly as Sheena. Lovely and super inspiring.

Hanako66 said...

that is so awesome...what a great idea. there was a guy that went to my HS that wore the same pair of shorts every day for a year...this is much cooler:)

That is one smart, resourceful woman! Proves that true style has more to do with vision and creativity than money or fashion.

How cool! Just goes to show how much versatility one can have within their wardrobe if there is enough creativity applied.

amazing! i want to do this just to simplify my life - and she's also doing it for a good cause! that dress looks like a great one to wear every day too - i wonder if i can find one to do my own version!

ONE YEAR?!
wowzers... that is some dress.

to think that i complaint about nothing to wear with a wardrobe full of clothes!!! this is so interesting and fun, such an inspiration. i want to start creating some new looks with old clothes :-)

Anonymous said...

Neat idea, although I think I would end up spending more on accesories and shoes to compensate for the repetition of the dress.

I'll bet after one year this woman will be very excited to put on a pair of trousers. :)

JOY said...

amazing... this would make getting ready every morning so easy... i love it!!

Bri said...

Wow. I admire her ingenuity and dedication - I would get so sick of it after a while! Good for her.
