What if Disney princesses didn't live happily ever after? Photographer Dina Goldstein decided to re-think their outcomes. "I began to imagine Disney's perfect princesses juxtaposed with real issues that were affecting women around me," she says, "such as illness, addiction and self-image issues." Genius and heartbreaking.

as a not so tiny person, i hurt a little bit to see the artist represent being overweight as some kind of failure or falling...i.e. red riding hood.

My daughter is a princess addict and my husband and I were just saying last night that it would be so great if they did an adult movie for what happens after the fairytale ending... Aladdin is cheating on Jasmin, etc. It would be so great! Perfect timing with these pics!

I saw these on JPG yesterday, and I just love them! The Rapunzel photo is so sad. And the Little Red Riding Hood sparked a heated debate on JPG. These photos definitely get people thinking and talking!

Disney is releasing a new Princess movie this year. The character will be Disney's fist African-American "princess" and the movie has sparked quite a bit of controversy. (by disney standards anyways, not michael moore standards. lol.)

Thank you for doing these photos! I often shudder at my daughter's love for princesses and these pictures just cracked me up. I know some think they are dark but most fairy tales are tragic anyway (mother is dead or parents are dead, etc). Thanks again!

The sad thing is they would have to show Ariel drowned in her bathtub or something similar, as if she couldn't cope with life on land.
And yes, Little Red Riding Hood was kind of sad, couldn't she have been shown in a room with wolf heads mounted on all the walls, gun in hand?

These remind me of a book of Anne Sexton's poetry, a retelling of fairy tales. The book is called Transformations, and put a realistic and grim view back onto the tales, as well as drawing some interesting analogies to more current social issues. Very good stuff.
She is one of the most amazing, imaginative photographers on the planet, and these shots are just the epitome of brilliance.
