What inspires you?

I've been feeling a little uninspired ever since we got back from Paris. (It can be hard to get back into the swing of things, don't you think?) So, I'd love to know: What inspires you? xo

  8. The unexpected. When things don't happen how I expect them, I get inspired to allow other things to deviate from the plans I have.

  9. Beautiful blogs like yours, and shopping at a good arts supply store!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'm inspired by rain, by a lot of blogs I see everyday with beutiful posts like yours and by my loved ones

  11. sometimes home depot, no really, i'll wander around and look at all of their materials and think of other uses for them. i added copper flashing around the windows and doors of my chocolate shop and was a hit. also, vintage stores, salvage stores and anything to do with design...new blogs are always fun to seek out, definite inspiration!

  12. I really do believe that it is those mild and awkward times that are the ones to be taken advantage of. Just like this, sit back and open the door for all of life's unexpected to stop by and say 'Hello'.

    ...Hello.

  13. Joanna.. I find art so inspiring! I helped a graffiti artist friend paint last night and felt so revitalized by all of his creative energy..

his show is tomorrow night in NY. details on www.bigreddiary.com

  15. This will sound weird, but lists! I love listing my wishes, dreams, favorites. I find that just pouring it out onto paper can help get the sparks going.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Right now, in my hemisphere, Autumn is a great inspiration. Also, taking walks around the neighborhood. I bet you can find inspiration in Spring, too, and strolls in Central Park!
Hope you fight the blues away soon!

  17. these are AMAZING!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I love to just go for a little bike ride in the city with my iPod on; the music and the fresh air usually do the trick. (and of course, there's always peanut butter & chocolate!) ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  19. blogs, book stores, thrift stores, and my favorite photographers

    ReplyDelete
  20. This is hard! There is so much that inspires me!! Passionate conversations with motivating friends, good music, clean rooms, bright sunny days! Once I mentally get in the zone, then I'm good, but it can be hard to start. Especially when you come back from an awesome vacation! Sometimes I come back from travels all excited to do something, and other times I come back just yearning to be back on vacation. It can put you in a slump, but don't worry... knowing how you are, I'm sure you'll beat the funk soon!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well besides all the other amazing blogs out there - I'm inspired by music...of all types. When I pop in some Joni Mitchell she makes me think of soft colors, images of light, flowing fabrics or a crisp room with sunlight pouring in. At the same time she reminds me rain tapping on the window, curled up in a cozy blanket and a warm cup of tea.
And she ALWAYS makes me think of my Mom who is a huge inspiration to me!

  22. Hi Joanna,

Being in a creative field I know how you feel. Sometimes it is hard to find inspiration. A long talk with a friend always helps me. Also, finding beautiful things like magazines, fabrics, pictures, always makes me feel inspired.

    ReplyDelete
  23. hands down my son, my husband and my puppy girl. my little family is all the inspiration I need.

p.s. I adore your photo of the little princess in her tutu. too cute

    ReplyDelete
  24. You inspire me :)
    truly you do.

I have to say other people's blogs always help me, entertain me, take me away from my worries or stress. kinda dorky, but thank goodness for the internets

    ReplyDelete
  25. Reading about or seeing other people's passions come to life on their blogs like www.persistingstars.blogspot.com or www.ravenn.blogspot.com/

    ReplyDelete
  26. Joanna, I think something is in the air. I've been suffering from a case of semi-writer's block for the last few days. When I feel like this, I like to just step back from whatever I'm working on (unless there's a pressing deadline, of course!) and get outside. Taking a walk on a beautiful spring day really goes a long way toward clearing my head.

And of course, a little shopping never hurt either! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  27. hardwork. work hard at one thing for an hour or two: your job, your laundry, your garden or helping others. Then when you are done and you see all that you have accomplished. You will have inspired yourself. I find it is so easy to track down external inspiration... other's blogs, other's stories, other's art. But at the end of the day - it still isn't mine to behold.

  30. I created an account at GoodReads.com. It's a social network organized around the books people are reading and the ones they want to read. It has been a great sort of inspiration for me and I am having very few dull moments since I started using it. Whenever I am feeling blah, I go look at books. That always lifts my spirits.

  32. weird, i've been feeling the same this past week.

i think it's a combination of things that inspire me. it doesnt need to be anything specific, but maybe good weather, a random smile, a chocolate biscuit and a pretty picture in the same day. done.

    ReplyDelete
  33. you.

feel encouraged. inspiration i just around the corner. perhaps literally.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I have felt very uninspired this week as well. What has helped is going out and breathing in some fresh air. Then think of everything you are thankful for and remember places and people who have inspired you. Good luck miss Joanna! :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. i have a little black book that i carry with me always...i have written down so many inspiring ideas over time that i can feel inspiration all over again when i flip through it.
of course my google reader is a sure source of inspiration too!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Beautiful photography, mostly black and white, thoughtful and clever writing... Your blog in fact!

    ReplyDelete
  37. A combination of things: NPR, The Times, the book of the moment, different magazines & all photo blogs. The best way I inspire myself is to take my camera around with me and snap random bits of beauty where I live...it forces you to see the teeny tiny things as wonderful & new.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Sorry for the second post, but I had to mention this magazines, full of inspiration:

  42. Ah, the post-Parisian slump. I know it well. Mine lasted most of April - after being somewhere so SO it was hard to get back into normal life.

I've ben fighting my way out doing unexpected pure joyful things - like going swimming in a pool and doing underwater handstands, or jumping rope outside, or making a crazy cake as a surprise for a friend, or reading something completely off my radar just for fun.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Anonymous1:50 PM

Reading something beautiful, fresh flowers, clean crispy sheets, music I love, gently lightly raining days, poetry.

    ReplyDelete
  44. walking and gawking - either urban or nature, making lists, caffeine!, colours(looking at paint charts even if you don't plan to paint anything), flowers, making something easy like a pom pom or garland to cheer up surroundings, moving furniture around, baking, taking random photos, making a collage... but sometimes it feels ok not to be inspired, that's usually when I need a rest, just to read a book, have a bath and take things in for a while. And Oh God, PPS (post Paris slump) - I know it well. Unfortunately there's no cure except further trips to Paris, not even macarons help (much). x

Dance round like crazy. I'm into Beirut at the mo. But also it's good to be really still. Just spending time noticing things. Shapes, tastes, smells. consciously making little discoveries. And People watching. (Unobtrusively of course) then piecing together the stories of their lives.

  58. outdoors, stepping away from the screen and getting out taking a break from all the overwhelming talent and blogs out there and finding my own creativity within myself! Sounds cheesy but it helps.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Inspiration almost always comes from my friends! Family too. I love to get out and see the world as much as possible.
But I find that putting ideas out on the table with friends over dinner or a long chat on the phone, is essential to fueling creativity. I know I've inspired others that way, and others continue to inspire me with their art, their world, their points of view.
It's good to start from scratch sometimes and just get out with an open mind too.
    (Take a different road!)

But I hear you. I'm having a really hard time getting my act together when it comes to being inspired at work (as a designer). It's just about killing me.

    ReplyDelete
  66. i hear ya sister! i've been the same the past couple of days...changing weather maybe? my inspiration is just walking around...either in the city or the mall. inspiration doesn't have to come from glamorous places or people! just from the little things...and it really happens when you least expect it. patience! xo

  77. Joanna,
Wow! First, I hope you thoroughly enjoyed your Paris trip. Coming down off that one is tough...
It's tough for me after spending a few hours by the ocean!! :D

I've recently gotten into the French, Marie Claire Idees!
It's filled with LOADS of ideas plus just wonderfully, colorful photographs. I usually search far and wide to get my hands on an issue; they are just marvelous.
It was an inspiration for my most recent blog entry... crocheting colorful posies.

I wish you the very best!

  78. I've just gotten back from an amazing month overseas and found it hard to re-engage with life here, but one thing that has proved a pleasant surprise is that I went to some AMAZING cities, and it's made me realise that the one I live in ain't so bad after all.

I've reconnected, albeit slowly, by making time to do all the things I love about my town, such as have amazing coffee every day, walking around the city and taking pictures of the lights, cuddling up in my bed reading, staring out of the window sitting in my favourite armchair, etc.

So, I'd suggest making a list of things you love about NYC and doing one of those things every day - it won't take long to love your life again! xo

I now this may seem weird, but read Emerson or Whitman... Every time I read them, I get an entirely new outlook on things. Reading Self Reliance inspires me every time.

And if that doesn't work... investigate the art of bread. One of my favorite things in the world is eating a delicious baguette (though this may just remind you that you're not in Paris any more).

  121. I know how you feel...I think it's the good weather one day, bad weather the next that contributes to it...but it happens to me sometimes too. Last week I went to the Met though and I felt this crazy surge of creativity. I live in NY and don't get to the museums nearly enough. why? I made a pact to go to one or to a gallery or concert or show at least once every two months. I think I can swing it but who knows...sometimes all you need to do is walk down a street in Manhattan and notice the details and suddenly you can feel inspired. Esp in your beautiful neighborhood! :)

  124. I like to get a cup of coffee and go to a big retail bookstore and wonder around the fiction section. Sometimes it's the title that catches me (don't flip it over, just enjoy what you think it's about), but usually it's the cover art. Good covers are really fun, but bad covers are better because I want to design a new cover for it. Thinking about why the cover failed and what would make it look better gives my head a goal, something to work for while it's warming up.

  126. I get inspired alot from my Childhood. Growing up together with my siblings, my mum. They are on my mind daily and I have a lot of happy memories. Its nice to think about them.

I also get inspired things I see on my way to work, what I read in the newspapers and from my friends.
