What shoes do you wear on vacation?

I'm so excited for Paris next week, but I'm torn about what shoes to pack. My Converse are comfy, but all my other flats and heels give me blisters. Do you have any comfy but chic walking shoes? I'm stuck!

  1. My Tory Burch flats are insanely comfy. But really, any shoes will hurt after that many hours of walking. Here's a tip! Get a blister stick (Bandaid makes one and so does Dr. Scholls) and cut up some moleskin. Put in purse/pocket and you're ready for anything!!

  2. My cowboy boots are generally excellent for walking ... but probably because I've already broken them in. What about soft moccasins with arch support inserts (the latter part sounds so nerdy, but no one would know they're in there!)? I think comfort trumps chicness, so stick with the Converse if need be.

I highly recommend Fiorentini and baker boots...you can where them w/ dresses, jeans, pajama pants, whatever and they always look so cool. I bought the cropped motorcycle boots last fall and I still wear and adore them. Maybe check Ebay to get the best price :)

  4. I went to Paris last year and wore Puma ballerina pumps. They looked like ordinary flats but were super comfy.

  5. I brought my sperry topsiders when i went to Boston for a weekend over Spring Break. I don't know if you can call those chic in any way, haha, but they were really comfy and I liked the touch they gave to all my outfits.
    photo of them here: http://moraleagency.blogspot.com/2009/04/boston.html
(by the way, I am super envious of your trip!!)

  6. I was just in Paris last month and noticed young French people wearing Converse All-Stars everywhere, so I wore mine and fit right in : )

  7. blundstones, red socks, blacktights (gel insole)- hope you have a fantastic trip !

    ReplyDelete
  8. i think stella mccartney makes comfy ballet flats (that can also be squished together and thrown in a bag). as far as heels, definitely stick with platforms with a slight heel in front and always carry bandaids in your pockets!

knee length boots! Comfy for walking, yet tres chic!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Your converses should do the trick! They're comfortable and BIG in France. Just as Stephanie said, you'd really fit in!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'm with you on this! I'm leaving for Europe in a few weeks for a 3 wk vacation and I'm planning to pack a few pairs, but I know deep down I'll be sporting my running shoes most of the time. My feet will just die otherwise. I also plan to pack a pair of flip flops and some cute teva hiking/walking shoes that look kind of Euro and have a bungy and no laces. Cute shoes?? I'm not sure I have room to necessitate them in my backpack.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I truly got every kind of painful blister possible trying to walk around Paris all day in fashionable shoes (nothing makes a fiance groan more than having to hear about your feet all day)! Luckily, the French offer a mind-blowing variety of blister-covering bandaids available in their pharmacies made for every kind of shoe pattern (peep-toe, strappy sandal, etc).
By the second week, though, I was in my cutest casual flats and flip-slops. You can always stick a pair of pretty heels in your hobo bag for the louvre and then kick them off right after!

    ReplyDelete
  13. What are they called now... Sketchers. I don't have a pair, but they have cute flats that look really comfy for walking.

  14. i stick to ballerina flats when i travel (well, anytime, really!) french sole's are my favorite...they are super comfortable (and you can always buy insoles for support). but while in paris you should definitely stop at repetto and your problem could be solved!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I got a pair of minnetonka moccasins that were amazing . . . much better then my normal flats or boots.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I recently bought these shoes
    http://www.jonesbootmaker.com/ebusiness1/store/product_details.jsp?pid=37238&cid=306&brc=&red=product_list.jsp?pso=9999,id=306,mid=-1,

and they are INSANELY comfy! I walk quite a lot and they haven't rubbed me once. I don't know about a whole day of walking though... but I will definitely be wearing these when I go to Paris, along with other chic flats. I will be taking some fashionable heels too but only for the evening when all I'll be doing is sitting down! I say wear your converse though if you know they are your comfiest shoes.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I used to think wedges were the answer, but mine just about KILLED me in San Francisco earlier this month!

    ReplyDelete
  18. My favorite comfy shoe (that I wore on my last vacation) is Vans Slip-ons... The most comfortable shoe ever.

    ReplyDelete
  19. use the flats you have! there are inserts you can press into the back of your shoes at any shoe store and sometimes even at your local grocery store for only about $2 a pair, they work like a charm and will leave your feet blister-free!

    ReplyDelete
  20. im no girl, but it really depends on clothes your bringing. if your just gonna be hanging out take some converse or toms and hit the streets. if your going for elegant/high class throw in some heels. Heels ALWAYS look good.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Anonymous12:52 PM

take your converse! they're incredibly popular in paris; I left mine at home on my last trip and wished I had brought them.

    ReplyDelete
  22. They're not the best looking but I have a pair of Keens that are super comfortable. They make "city shoes" that don't look like hiking shoes. I can walk for hours in them and be fine. They're a little pricey (for me anyways) going for between $75 and $130 a pair. But in my opinion are worthy every penny!

    ReplyDelete
  23. miss garance dore has some thoughts on parisian foot wear today... although i'm pretty sure i wouldn't last a second in those sky high heels!

i walked all over europe in cole hahn ballet flats...and now they have nike air inside their heels too!

as long as you're not the american tourist in white tennis shoes you will be just fine:)

    ReplyDelete
  24. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE I MADE! Last time I was in London I tool only cute shoes...I was in pure hell. I bought a few pairs of shoes while I was there, but still went through the torture of breaking them in!

My advice. Take the Chuck's for the plane and long walks cute flats or (packable) heals for dinner!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Have you thought about wedges? I also hear that Fluevogs are the comfiest heels you'll ever wear. They are a little expensive, but worth it!

    Good lucky my dear!

    ReplyDelete
  26. P.S.

Clark's makes some really cute comfort shoes.

    ReplyDelete
  27. a few options, depending on your choice of clothes
    -Converse or Asics
-Sue London Ballet Flats, and trying to track down Bloch version..
-These cool mocs from Frye ( love what they are doing again..) http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7528255/c/325.html

    ReplyDelete
  28. Take 3 or 4 different pairs (I know, I'm a chronic over-packer), and rotate them to avoid getting blisters!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I have red slip-on Privos that I love and even hiked in when I went to Italy. They did not give me any blisters. It's true that many Parisians wear Converse. You could also treat yourself to a pair of shoes in Paris. They had some cute shoe boutiques last time I went to Montmartre!

    ReplyDelete
  30. tory burch all the way. if I am walking all over (like the entire town of Boston or NYC in a day). I will just put two band-aides on the back of my heal (just in case), but I have never gotten a blister from TB!

    ReplyDelete
  31. thank you so much!!!!! these are such wonderful ideas!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Actually, my inside source in Paris says Converses are all the rage in Paris right now :-)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I usually rotate my footwear. Sure, it's Paris and you will feel obligated to look fabulous every second, but in reality, if you are going to be walking a ton, bring the converse! You should try a pair of repetto zizi lace-ups (and their ballet flats) when you get there. I find the zizi's incredibly comfortable all day long. No blisters or rubbing, and my feet are notoriously finicky. Mine are patent, and I can only imagine that the leather versions are even more comfortable.

    ReplyDelete
  34. hey... go for Camper shoes!!
They smile at your feet and they also have heels.
    kisses from Italy (Roma)

    ReplyDelete
  35. BTW, I found that Repetto's flagship store was scarce on sizes (at least when I was there- I couldn't get a single pair I wanted, and I picked out like 5 pairs for them to check!) so do check out Printemps- they have a huge selection of Repetto.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Danskos! Although they are not the height of fashion, I can walk ALL DAY in my professionals with no problem.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I SWEAR by these:

    http://wideopenspaces.squarespace.com/wide-open-spaces/michael-kors-gillian-flat.html

    hope Paris is fabulous. xo

    ReplyDelete
  38. I just got those Pop Art Pumas, which are so rad it hurts. Also, check for deals on cute comfy shoes at sierratradingpost.com. I got my summer sandals, danskos in darling wedge-style for under $50. I'm also partial to Eccos and Mephistos, though the latter will put you out a bit.

Never suffer on vacation. Seriously. Don't be that girl that slows everyone up or who looks pained. It's unattractive.

    ReplyDelete
  39. To be comfortable and chic Converse are the best option but don't let your socks show (either skinny jeans with ankle socks or black opaque tights with a skirt.) Any other sports or hiking footwear of any kind will scream tourist! Someone else also recommended French Sole - they do lovely soft ballet shoes. Amuse-toi bien!

    ReplyDelete
  40. i have a t-shirt that says wear pumps, take taxis. i love that. but converse make more sense for walking and touring. but bring the heels just in case! :) have fun!

On your first day in Paris, go to Bensimon (there's one in Marais) and get some of their canvas ballet flats. They come in neutrals and delicious candy colors. I've worn mine everywhere (including all over NYC). To preview: http://www.bensimon.com/

Plus, they famously were worn by Jane Birkin and Brigit Bardot.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I've been sticking Dr. Scholls on the heels of every pair of shoes I own, and they work wonders. Might help for those days when you don't feel like rocking your Converse.

    ReplyDelete
  43. i always, always pack my black leather flat riding boots. They have a very small heel so they give some support but they are flat so no aches or pains of blisters. and they go with so many things.

    ReplyDelete
  44. A pretty little sandal with a kitten heel and maybe a bit of bling...

I love Nine West. Great quality shoes without the Manolo price. I have bad feet and can wear Nine Wests almost forever with no problem.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I stick to Mudd flats. Super cute, diverse, and REALLY comfortable!!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. i tend to pack 3 pairs of shoes for a trip like yours. You have to have teh converse just in case but i always throw in some flats and then if you have any chic plans you'll want heels or sandals. It's paris, you've gotta look good!

I agree with the blister stick, mole skin suggestion too though!

    ReplyDelete
  47. moccasins and converses!

    boots in the winter...

    ReplyDelete
  48. I wore ecco buillion mary janes in Italy and Switzerland last year and I was sooo happy that I just bought another pair. They are super comfy and look great with jeans, skirts, dresses and dressy pants.

The only thing I wish i'd brought on the trip were my converse jack purcells in addition to my eccos:)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Honestly any shoes by Pink Studio are amazingly comfy and chic! You don't even have to break them in if you are able to find your right size. I love the two pairs that I have. and if you go to endless.com they do free next day shipping! So you would def get them in time for your trip if you are looking to get a pair before Paris. And again both their heals and flats are amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  50. converse will be fine- they're always in style in paris! why not just pack them for walking shoes, and then treat yourself to a pair of shoes when you arrive? i'm partial to repetto for flats, and jonak for an affordable and chic variety. have fun! bisous!

    ReplyDelete
  51. No tennis shoes in Paris! I wore a pair of flat boots all over Paris in December and not a single blister. I felt chic while still being touristy... a tough combination!

    ReplyDelete
  52. It's getting much too warm in Paris to wear knee length boots. Someone mentioned this, and it might not be the chic-est thing ever, but a lot of people here (myself included) rock the Converse All Stars. They're comfy and you won't stick out! Otherwise I'd go with some ballerina flats.

Hope you have a great time in Paris!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I second the Sue London's, they're incredibly comfortable flats. I also recommend alternating between a few pairs of shoes and definitely carry a cute pair of heels in the bag for whenever you feel like channeling Catherine Deneuve.

    ReplyDelete
  54. When traveling I always where my knee-high flat boots. They are great with jeans and dresses and even in the rain. Plus, they are super comfy and chic.

    ReplyDelete
  55. My 3 traveling must haves:
    Camper boots for serious walking.

The new f-troupe oxfords I just picked up &
the marc jacob mice flats for everything in between.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Its beautiful spring weather here (Paris) so apart from converse for rainy weather bring some flat sandals and balet flats , leave the heels for evening parisian cobblestones are a pain with them :-)

Hello Jo, and so i delurk....

I think the converse are always stylin but if you're planning on donning pumps for any amount of time/distance a preventative measure is to bathe your feet in surgical spirit this week. Old dance trick that always used to stop me getting blisters even after the horrors of pointe work. Bit of a faff though. Ooooh Paris in spring!

    Rachel xxx

  58. Band-Aid makes a product called Friction Block Stick that works really well. You just rub it on your foot and it prevents blisters-
great for wearing flats or sandals!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I definitely wouldn't pack those heels! What about some cute ballet flats?

    ReplyDelete
  60. I have some Steve Madden boots that are knock offs of the popular Loeffler Randall boots a few seasons back and they are so comfy for walking!!!

    http://www.stevemadden.com/item.aspx?id=42992

    they are on sale too!

    ReplyDelete
  61. i have to have my brown leather riding boots everywhere i go! they are so comfortable.

but i'm a heels girl too. all my friends made fun of for bringing more shoes that i did clothes on my honeymoon.

    ReplyDelete
  62. hi joanna - i swear by my trusty canvas TOMS, soft leather arche laius flats, and birkenstock gizeh thong sandals (for when it's really hot and you need to do lots of walking.)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Anonymous2:52 PM

I'm so glad you posted this! I'm going on a euro road trip in 2 weeks and this has been my biggest stress!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I usually end up traveling in a pair of Privo sneakers or my Merrell boots if the weather is going to be bad. If it is going to be balmy I pack a pair of Indigo sandals but I am creeped out not wearing real shoes on a plane so I never wear them until I arrive.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Check out the insanely comfortable Puma shoes. They look awfully pretty, but they're just as good as sneakers. I wore them all over London - and we walked EVERYWHERE - and I didn't get one blister. They're nice, too, because they will go just as easily with jeans as they'll go with a pretty dress.

    ReplyDelete
  66. oh my god. just booked a flight to paris next month and the chic v. comfy shoe question has been bugging me for the past four hours! thanks for posting!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I didn't read all the comments yet so I don't know how often this has been said, but you can TOTALLY wear Converse shoes in paris.
Also, I just got new flats from Cole Haan with Nike Air technology in them. They took a few days to break in, but I live in Switzerland and walk everywhere, and they are the best flats I have ever had here. I can walk down un-even cobblestone stairways and not feel like I am about to lose my shoes!
(I believe the style I got was called Air Juliet?)

  68. Hi!

Taryn Rose makes some spectacularly comfortable shoes. I have a pair of her wedges that I have actually sprinted through airports in on a number of occasions. The first time I had to do that I was so astounded that my feet were no worse for wear that I wrote a note to the company. They are expensive, but you can find them on-sale on-line with some success. I have the Delores.

    Have fun in Paris!

    ReplyDelete
  69. i live in milan and converse are EVERYWHERE. so you should be fine in paris.
i also have some tod's ballet flats that are extremely comfortable. i wear them whenever possible.
all the blister-preventer suggestions are great so definitely stock up on some of those things before you come because i can almost guarantee you won't find that kind of stuff in europe.

    ReplyDelete
  70. i second the bensimon shoes for sure! and if it's sandal weather grab a pair of worishofers, they gave me no problems and were amazing ever since trekking on day one!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think most flats would work... I wore flats all around Paris. I think the trick is to break them in before you go & band-aids always help!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Anonymous4:00 PM

Try shoes from Me Too -- sold on Piperlime.com and at Nordstroms. They have cute flats that have a rubber sole (one you can't see) that helps cushion your foot as you sightsee all day. I have 4 pairs and love them.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Last year while touring Paris I made the big mistake of wearing my cutest (read painful) shoes. 2 days in, I was dying for something comfy. Converse are a major staple in a French women's wardrobe (funny considering they're American shoes) but I swear by insoles -- they will seriously change your life if you have to be on your feet all day. Good luck and have fun!

    ReplyDelete
  74. I always notice lots of chic Parisiennes wearing Converse Allstars - save the heels for teetering between kirs and coups de champagne :) xx

    ReplyDelete
  75. I wore my Toms the whole time I was in europe. They are super comfy and pack very well.
Go to www.Tomsshoes.com and check them out.

  76. wait until you get to paris...then stop by the repetto store for the best flats. ever. :)

  78. I have a very comfy pair of Solea trainers. Don't see any right now - something like these.

    http://www.kurtgeiger.com/online-shop/59141-solea-scout

I've always thought Camper look comfy, and Clarks have good shoes. Just don't wear ballet shoes, the soles are so thin they will hurt!

    ReplyDelete
  79. my pointy pewter flats from urban outfitters do the trick...they're flat, stylish, and not very inexpensive to replace! (i have two, as a matter of fact! :))

    ReplyDelete
  80. I have yet to find a pair of shoes that are cute and comfy at the same time. All my ballerina flats are good for a while, but if I walk a lot in them I'll get blisters.

If you find a winner, tell me about it!

    ReplyDelete
  81. I wore this: http://tiny.cc/saffron544 pair of Navid o Nadia mary janes all over Paris last winter with no pain. They're cheap but comfy and you can get them at Shoegasm on 8th ave.

Also try Camper shoes. Every pair I own is incredibly comfy and lasts forever.

    Cheers!

  82. when we were in paris last fall I took some little black flats from elie tahari (cuz they go with everthing! and converse get heavy after awhile) and they were my go to shoes ... but a big tip that I did was I carried a pair of other shoes in my bag JUST IN CASE ... and some moleskin solves any problem :0)

ps - - one of the coolest things in paris that not many people talk about is the catacombs tour - - REALLY COOL and not many tourists

    ReplyDelete
  83. I adore my converse, but they are really flat and after 3 or 4 days with them they hurt. Biviel has been my go to dressier shoe and they are comfortable 90% of the time. I like to slip the heel gel inserts or the petal thingys into them to help make them cushier when my feet start to hurt.

    Enjoy Paris!

    ReplyDelete

I highly recommend Cole Haan - sneaker or ballerina flat styles for travel and walking - especially the ones with built in Nike Air technology, they're worth every penny! Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  85. French Sole flats take on the shape of your feet and will not leave blisters. They are expensive but so worth it. I wear mine everywhere!

    ReplyDelete
  86. I brought only my Tory Burch flats as a walking shoe to Buenos Aires and really regretted it. The blisters haunted me for the rest of the trip. We finally found a store that sold Converse and I was in Heaven. The great thing is that I think Converse are still much hipper in France than they are in the US. Kind of like Levis. Go for the Converse.

  87. Hi Joanna :)
Last year in europe i discovered the best shoes 'ever' for walking without looking sporty - now my problem with finding good shoes that won't hurt my feet is over! I just bought another pair Iggdrasil style for my trip to Japan .
Have a blast in Paris! :)

    ReplyDelete
  89. Hush Puppies...Mary Janes. They breathe, and are super cute. Go with jeans, skirts and whatever!~super cute!:) Oh and lightweight too. I love mine.

    ReplyDelete
  90. similar to Taryn Rose but better, IMHO are Thierry Rabotin shoes. UNBELIEVABLE! Light as air but super structure as well. All styles available; they call them 'the all day heels' although I would recommend the flats for real walking.

(expensive though and you might not have the time to find them on sale; Ebay is a good place to buy them).

  96. Bring the converse because after day #1 in Paris, your feet are going to ache.

But bring a chic pair of after-dinner shoes for a nice evening out - go black!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Definitely go with the converse for one pair. I highly recommend this pair of Chie Miharas - the Lais - available at Twig. They are out of the box comfortable!!! No breaking in required. Have an awesome trip.

  98. Flats & Sandles. I usually go to summer vacations or to places that's summer, so that I can pack like 5 -6 of them without using too much spaces, then I can color code my wardrobe with my shoes. ;D

But a pair of versatile high heel is need, just in case we decide to go to some fancy restaurant or something, usually will pack a nice dress to go with it.

BTW, thank you for stopping by my blog and your lovely comments about my wedding photos. ;D

I dont know if anybody has already suggested this.. but I swear by KEDS! I went around Vegas, SF and New York in them and didnt get blisters at all! I liked them so much I wore them again on my next trip! KEDS makes nice flat slip-ons now, I got a simple black that goes with just about any outfit :) And they're lighter that the Converse slip-ons Ive tried. Oh, and I alternated my Keds with Steve Madden ballet flats, oh so comfy too! -dee

  102. i lived in paris a few years ago and all the girls wore their very worn in cool converse shoes! dress 'em up! dress 'em down... with denim, dresses, skirts! they managed to make them look tres chic!
i would take them and i bet you when you are there you will find a cute french pair of shoes!
bensimone tennis shoes are very french - they have a store on the big shopping street in the marais and come in ever color imaginable!!

make sure to go to la duree! for french macorons! the one on rue jacob is my fave! and petit bateau for french basic t-shits. and rose cafe for organic tea time yummies! and to the Musée national Eugène Delacroix! and the palais royal for vintage! and las du falafel in the marais for the best lunch ever!!!!!!!!!!!
oh i could go on and on!

    HAVE FUN!
    bon voyage!

    ReplyDelete
  103. ps- don't wear sandals - your feet get toooo dirty after walking around all day - the streets are really dirty

    ReplyDelete
  104. Not that my little suggestion of 'comfy flats' all the way down here will mean anything, so, I just want to say, the shoes the lady's wearing in the picture are SICK!!! (in a cool way)

    ReplyDelete
  105. even the comfiest of wedges start hurting once you start trekking about paris... try flat boots! i've got this old pair by loeffler randall that have paid dividends over the years...

but don't forget to pack your converse!

    have fun, jo...

    ReplyDelete
  106. I always bring a pair of comfy boots when I travel...esp to Paris. I wear my converse there but sometimes you just want something a little dressier and my flats have no support so after a few hours my feet and shins are all ouchy (nevermind the blisters!)...so, I like to bring a flattish pair of boots that I can dress up or down. when you are there you MUST visit my favorite boot shop in Paris. It's called Chausserie and it's on the Rue de Buci in the Latin Quarter. I even have a photo of it for reference if you want it! It's across the street from a Paul cafe and a market. It's next door to the Hotel du Buci - a very quaint and charming hotel that I've stayed in several times. You will not regret a visit to this shop! I've gotten two pairs of boots there on two different trips and I love them! enjoy!! so excited for you:) april in paris is divine!

the trick is to have a big enough bag to carry nice shoes (ie whatever you love that is uncomfortable) and wear something neutral and comfy evryday and if its a photo op you know you will cherish do a quick switch. It's my avid pedestrian trick. Hope this helps.

  110. How exciting!! While I was in Paris, I overpacked and brought every shoe imaginable, I ended up in my flip flops most of the time with all the walking. But take those extra fun dressy ones for when you do grab a cab too..

    Have so much fun!! :)

  111. Hi from Spain!
In Easter Holidays I went to NY and I was so worried about my shoes because I used to wear heels everyday and I wanted to be comfortable and chic walking all the day and I bought THE walking shoes! They are from STONEFLY and I bought the venus model and they were perfect because they had the perfect chic style a 4cm of secret heels..hehehe! and soooooo comfortable! try them, good luck and have nice trip in Paris!

    ReplyDelete
  112. A heel is really the best for walking. I danced for many years and you should go to a dance shop, and get a heel and several ballet flats. The jazz heel is chic and sensible and you will love it and your feet too. You will be dancing in the rain, in Paris and NY!

    Connies (navy)
    leather driving shoes (brown)
    ballet flats (soft silver leather)
    flat T-bar sandals (red)

Just took the above for a 3 week trip to Vietnam.

No blisters. Have fun in Paris

  114. I live in my cons or flip flops when i'm on vacation but i have pretty comfy ballet flats and diana ferrari's. If in doubts wear cons and pack 1 pair of flip flops and 1 pair of all purpose pretty black shoes. 2 if you have space :)

  115. My challenge for every vacation ... I love my flats + driving shoes. have a fab trip + can't wait to hear all about it!

  116. CONVERSE!!!My French fashion savvy pal, Anne of MesVitrinesNYC, was telling me I MUST get leather Converse like she was wearing (bought in NYC for $60)
    Converse is HUGE in Paris!!!

    ReplyDelete
  117. PS
I comparison-shopped balerines so much in Paris but I forgot to buy any! I must post all my pics (tons). Don't follow my example.
    :)

  118. All about the converse! The only two pair of shoes I took with me were my converse and black boots.

That's all I am packing for this weekend as well. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  119. Timberland Katriel Backstrap are the absolute best. I bought three pairs. Zappos still has the brown.
    http://www.zappos.com/ViewProduct.action?productId=7312833
They also come in black and tan, but it isn't a good tan. They are like walking on clouds with no break-in period. I wear either them or snow boots and nothing else. I really worry that someday I'll be 80 and they'll be worn to threads, and then what will I do?

    ReplyDelete
  120. recently i decided to upgrade to a more supportive walking shoe, so i got a cute pair of keen siennas in green. i ended up walking 5 miles in them on sat - bad idea! never a good idea to break in a new pair of shoes (even comfy supportive ones) when you're somewhere where you plan on doing a lot of walking.

    http://www.keenfootwear.com/product/fw08/shoes/women/market%20street/sienna%20mj

and i actually find these pumps from target incredibly comfotable and can walk for a long time in them (the strap is key!). have them in brown and in mustard, i love them so much!

  121. I have a pair of pewter Nicole "Magoo" flats (with a darling little bow on top) that are awesome...like being barefoot. Sadly, they are discontinued and I've searched the world over for a new pair...but alas, they are no more. My current, badly beaten pair will accompany me to NYC this weekend.

  122. Hi Jo,
I'm in Paris next week to...April 29 - May 5! Hope we have great weather. I like to wear my Blowfish flats. All their flats are super buttery soft! And my Converses (but only if I'm wearing jeans)! I can't walk in heels!

    ReplyDelete
  123. http://karlascloset.blogspot.com/
Karla just got back from Europe and she had the same problem! She had some comfy, yet chic solutions, check it out!

    ReplyDelete
  124. I just got these Costume National sandals on a whim, and they are by far the most walking-friendly but super fashionable shoes I've ever worn. I carry a pair of Chanel ballet flats for back-up, but most times I don't need to change out and they're stable enough not to wobble down uneven pavement.

    ReplyDelete
  125. no no, you Northern Americans, one cannot flap about Europe in a pair of Converses/Keens or Vans. Do you not understand!? The Parisians, those fashion bulldogs of urban Europe, will eat you alive! We live in mortal fear of them. I say, try Spanish brand Campers. They have some cutesy strappy shoes with sensible soles that will take you from the Louve to a snazzy Saint Germain bistro with far less glares and hisses. http://shop.camper.com/producto.xhtml?option=20988-002&lng=en#

My two go-to travel shoes are Dansko (closed back) clogs and Geox loafers. Both required zero break-in time.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Dansko (Maryjanes) are a bit stylish but totally comfortable and supportive...not only for my feet but my whole body & lower back. I could stand and walk in them all day and not have a thought about discomfort.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Pack one pair of flat, black boots (I love Seychelles for their comfort and price...about $150), a good pair of sneaks, and a pair of sandals. That should get you through every outfit.

    ReplyDelete
  130. converse are my go-to pair for holidays, oh and birkenstocks for sandals.

have fun in Paris. Seems like the entire world is travelling.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Hi joanna, happy to hear that you will be in paris soon. I feel like someone I know very well coming to visit me :)
Converses are really cute and comfy for long walks in paris. But, I wouldn't forget a nice pair of heels, like french people say: "on ne sait jamais"

    ReplyDelete
  132. i almost needed to see a podiatrist when I was in Paris from wearing cute flats. Went to Gallerie Lafayette and got overpriced all-stars and became a new woman!!

    Bon Chance!

    ReplyDelete
  133. I was in Italy 2 weeks ago and everyone was wearing Converse! I wanted some so badly, because I was stuck in some old pumas after my flats had ruined my feet. With skinny dark jeans, they were everywhere, on young and old.

Felt sort of silly wanting to buy converse in another country, though!

    ReplyDelete
  134. The French version of our Converse = BenSimon sneakers... they are super popular in Paris and come in all colors in a slip on and lace version. It's supposed to be the chic trend there to get the lace version and remove the laces. I just picked up a pair from Madewell.. Martin+Osa has them as well. Comfy and goes with everything!

    ReplyDelete
  135. pumas makes cute flats!

    ReplyDelete
  136. Ballet flats are perfect for Paris but sometimes wearing flats all day can get a little uncomfy so I think small wedges are chic and comfy too! and be sure to take some killer heels for evening outings - have you seen the height of heels these days? eeek!!

    ReplyDelete
  137. i was there a few weeks ago and it was still cool enough for boots, who knows if that has changed... maybe some boots if it is cold and fun sandals if it is warm... i vote for cute and comfortable over sporty and comfortable though, but that's just me...

    ReplyDelete
  138. I studied abroad this past summer and traveled through London, France and Italy. I brought one pair of tom's shoes flats and they were insanely comfortable. The first couple days, your feet will hurt no matter what shoes you wear, but after a little bit it was no problem. They're cute and for every pair you buy they give a pair to a child in need :) tomsshoes.com

    ReplyDelete
  139. I've got to try to Tom's flats. I've tried ecco shoes, naturalizer (don't laugh) and seemingly every type of shoe one could try... nothing has spared me from the ravages of those cobblestone streets. I personally would never, ever wear a tennis shoe (converse or not) in Europe (or anywhere outside of the gym, frankly). So I say two thumbs down on that (sorry!) But you do need a pair of shoes with enough of a bottom to protect your poor little feet from those cobblestone streets.

However... your legs will look AMAZING by the end of your trip from all the walking. I always LOVE my legs after our vacations. All that walking on uneven surfaces does a body good!

(AMAZING tips from everyone. I'm bookmarking this post for future reference. Talk about a passionate topic!)

    ReplyDelete
  140. Wow! Quite a lot of opinions on here!! I just returned from paris a month or so ago and it was a tad bit warmer so I wore boots the entire time. I have a pair of cute flats that I got at Aldo that you might try. I travel a lot with the non-profit I started (http://www.gointernational.tv )and many times we have to go into places of rough terrain or really dirty areas. I NEVER wear tennis shoes on any trip unless I am exercising. America is the only nation that you can get away with that dress code in. Trust me, you will get a lot better service and respect if you can forgo the tennies.

Oh and if you want to see some cute Paris pics- go to http://www.followthemystery.com that was my last adventure there.

  153. There was this guy who believed very much in true love and decided to take his time to wait for his right girl to appear. He believed that there would definitely be someone special out there for him, but none came.
Every year at Christmas, his ex-girlfriend would return from Vancouver to look him up. He was aware that she still held some hope of re-kindling the past romance with him. He did not wish to mislead her in any way. nike shoxsSo he would always get one of his girl friends to pose as his steady whenever she came back. That went on for several years and each year, the guy would get a different girl to pose as his romantic interest. So whenever the ex-girlfriend came to visit him, she would be led into believing that it was all over between her and the guy. nike womens shoes The girl took all those rather well, often trying to casually tease him about his different girlfriends, or so, as it seemed! In fact, the girl often wept in secret whenever she saw him with another girl, but she was too proud to admit it. Still, every Christmas, she returned, hoping to re-kindle some form of romance. But each time, she returned to Vancouver feeling disappointed.
Finally she decided that she could not play that game any longer. puma mens shoes Therefore, she confronted him and professed that after all those years, he was still the only man that she had ever loved. mens puma shoesAlthough the guy knew of her feelings for him, he was still taken back and have never expected her to react that way. He always thought that she would slowly forget about him over time and come to terms that it was all over between them. nike shox Although he was touched by her undying love for him and wanted so much to accept her again, he remembered why he rejected her in the first place-she was not the one he wanted. nike 360 air maxSo he hardened his heart and turned her down cruelly. nike running shoesSince then, three years have passed and the girl never return anymore. They never even wrote to each other. NIKE air shoes The guy went on with his life..... still searching for the one but somehow deep inside him, he missed the girl.
On the Christmas of 1995, he went to his friend's party alone. "Hey, how come all alone this year? Where are all your girlfriends? What happened to that Vancouver babe who joins you every Christmas?", asked one of his friend.nike air max He felt warm and comforted by his friend's queries about her, still he just surged on.
Then, he came upon one of his many girlfriends whom he once requested to pose as his steady. He wanted so much to ignore her ..... not that he was impolite, wholesale nike shoes but because at that moment, he just didn't feel comfortable with those girlfriends anymore. nike shox torchIt was almost like he was being judged by them. The girl saw him and shouted across the floor for him. Unable to avoid her, he went up to acknowledge her.
"Hi......how are you? Enjoying the party?" the girl asked.
    "Sure.....yeah!", he replied.
She was slightly tipsy..... must be from the whiskey on her hand.
