Paris

In nine days, Alex and I will be taking a much anticipated trip to...PARIS!!! I'm so excited! I can't wait to walk around the city and take notes on gorgeous French style. We're taking a dorky but awesome-looking bike tour, and we've both been dreaming about croissants and chocolate mousse. Also, I'd love to have a picnic in the Luxembourg Gardens, and Alex wants us to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower, even though I'm scared of elevators. I will take tons of photos to show you!
So, I'm feeling the urge to buy clothes for the trip (do you ever get that, too?), so while I haven't bought anything for ages, yesterday I splurged on these white jeans. I like that the style is called "toothpick."

  7. I highly recommend you make it to the best falafel place on earth, Las du Falafel. We still dream about it at least once a week.

It is in the Marais...here is your map: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=las+du+falafel&ie=UTF8&ll=48.857995,2.359035&spn=0.008174,0.018518&t=h&z=16&iwloc=A

I was there in January and completely fell in love with the city, and except for the tower you will have no hassle with elevators in the city of lights... everyone takes the stairs :)

  15. I'm the dorkiest tourist ever, so I always love the big tourist spots. Montmartre, The Louvre, Versailles, Champs et Lysee, the Garnier Opera (my favorite hotel is right across the street from there!)
Makes me want to go back there right now! Have a blast!

  16. Have a blast! I went a few weeks ago (and bought a trench in advance, which I never ended up wearing there). Make sure to get a crepe from a street vendor, drink lots of champagne, and buy macarons galore. If you happen to be in the area, the bar at Mama Shelter is amazing.

  24. Have a great time. I am currently in Paris and it is quite warm.
There is plenty to visit. You will have an amazing time

    ReplyDelete
  25. Wow! You will have so much fun, be sure to visit the Galleria Lafayette while you are there too. And Versailles if you get the chance, its remarkable. And totally understand the urge to shop for your trip! New vacations always call for new wardrobe pieces. :) I am going to Cartagena next week and all I can do is think of buying long tropical maxi-dresses :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. How WONDERFUL for you!! Paris is the the most magical city. :-) Be sure to stop by Chez Hanna on Rue Vieille du Temple in the Marais for the best falafel of your life!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. It's great in Spring! Have an awesome trip and add Versailles Gardens to your picnic places list.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The elevators in the tower are more like buses. You can just be surrounded by people and not even go near the window if you want to. But they are kind of cool because the elevator track curves along the tower's legs. Anyway, my big regret is not renting the boats at Versailles and floating on the palace ponds like the kings used to. And I also missed the horse show at the palace stables. And you can plan your whole trip with the metro online map and schedule. I was traveling with Stan, a 76-year-old man whose house we bought the month before. He had never left the U.S., so I took him on my honeymoon since my husband had to work.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Have a wonderful time! I was there in March. Great local flare restaurant to try - Le Taxi Jaune. 13 Rue Chapon between Rue Beaubourg & Rue de Temple. One of the designers I work with recommended and it was great.

  30. Oh my goodness! So excited for you! We were in Paris last summer and a picnic in the Luxembourg Gardens is amazing and so romantic! It's one of my best memories. We also had a picnic on the grounds at Versailles as well. Can't wait to hear all about it!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Mmmmm... the croissants, the food, the scenery. My trip there several years ago with my fiance was soooo romantic. The memories of that time keep us warm now that we are married with small children and don't do "romantic getaways" for now!

Here's my advice: curb some of that shopping impulse now so that you can indulge it when you get there!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Happy travels Joanna! Sounds like a dream vacation. Love the jeans - I have a similar pair I bought last summer (Paige).

  40. Joanna,

aHHH, can i go along in your suitcase? i miss Paris so much! Promise me you will pack a baguette, cheese, chocolate & a bottle of vino -- a blanket and a candle -- and go the the Eiffel tower at NIGHT. Just lay on the lawn in front of the tower and soak in the amazingness. It's so romantic and beautiful all lit up and sparkling. I promise it's worth going at night more so than the day. HAVE so much fun!

the museums are amazing too, not just the louvre! one of my favorites is the musee rodin, on the left bank. no one ever goes there and it has amazing sculptures and grounds.

bon voyage a paris! hope you have a magical trip.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh & I did the Fat Tire Bike tour & loved it!!!

I'll echo what someone else said - you should definitely get a Falafel at L'as du Falafel. I had one last summer & it was amazing!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Have fun!! I loved Paris when I went there. If you hate elevators, you can always take the stairs up the Eiffel Tower...but it takes a while. And hurts the legs. :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. oh, I'm so jealous! that is going to be an amazing trip! I know I would OD on croissants for sure :) I can't wait to see the pictures you'll take. and yes, whenever I am getting ready for a vacation I always feel the need to buy new clothes! so bad, but at least your splurge can be worn again even after the trip. and those jeans are so classic!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oh I'll be there at the same time visiting my family and friends, maybe I'll see you having your picnic in a romantic Parc (I like parc Monceau too, because Luxembourg, not too many areas where you can actually sit on the grass!).. Definitely try L'As du Falafel, well and so many more! Have fun! xx

    ReplyDelete
  47. I see some others said take the stairs, and I agree. Yes, it's a work out, but you really get to take in the views as your working your behind! Have a wonderful time, and eat a crepe for me!

Make sure you go to Laduree on champs elysees - amazing!!

    Bisous

It's all make believe isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  49. I live in Paris and absolutely love it! I agree with the suggestions to try L'As du Falafel in the Marais. Also try the tea shop in the same area - Le Loi dans le Theiere.

The weather is lovely just now. Hope you have a great time!

  50. I'so excited about your trip to Europe. I was in Paris last summer. If you want to see Museum d'Orsay, choose thursday. It's half price entry and opening till 10 p.m. And for Louvre the best day is Friday for the same reason.

And I have been going CRAZY with white lately. I am so excited for spring/summer, and my wardrobe definitely shows it. I recently bought white shorts, white cropped pants, white jeans...it's getting ridiculous. I have to stop! :)

    Have fun in Paris!

  65. Eeee! How exciting! Is this like a pre-wedding honeymoon?

I always wind up shopping before a trip - and always pack my favorite outfits to wear every single day. I can't wait to see all the pics!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think you were born there, no? Perhaps my memory is not so good. Would advise against any more than necessary purchases before you leave. A great friend just brought me some terrific, classic black heels that were far nicer (Italian, but of course) & less expensive than similar ones here. Though heels, they are classic so easily walked in...they will be very useful every single day, esp. in DC.

That being said, & sitting in my striped shirt, good haircut, & working on my taxes while shouting to the cat to answer the door, already:

Jo, Have a super time...there's Paris, & then there's Paris. You can do both. Pls do go off the well-beaten, over-done, cloying path.

You can do a lot of "French" stuff anywhere in the world. There are some things that are Paris & can be done in about three minutes. OK, that's why the cranky "old" lady doesn't come 'round much anymore. I don't "heart" enough, I suppose. But I do "heart" you.

(If any time, re-rent/rent a Jeanne Moreau film before you go...now there's style--at any age.)

    ciao, bella

  67. Oooo, PARIS! I am so jealous! Are you planning on visiting any markets? I can't get those Kari Herer images of the flowers int he market out of my head. You will have to take tons of pics for us so that we can live vicariously through you!

P.S. I have those white jeans, and they are the best! Not see through at all and really tough. Good choice!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I LOVE Paris! You MUST go to the top of the Eiffel tower. It's worth the scary elevator ride. And, yes, I also get inspired to buy new clothes before a big trip :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. I so love Paris for the fact that you can simply sit in a cafe for hours and soak in the atmosphere and blend right in. Love it!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I went to Forever 21 and bought a bunch of stuff before taking off for Paris and it was all perfect! :)
Matchstick jeans are definitely IN, in Paris...maybe painted-on is a better way to put it.
    But white? I don't know...
Jeans are bigger in Paris than NYC but they are always jean-like IMO.
On verra bien as they say..
    Bon voyage!

  71. Cafe de l'industrie 16 rue Saint Sabin in the 11th. (Metro Bastille or Breguet-Sabin) There was an adorable small black cat frequenting the premises when I was there! And my meal was delicious.

Le Fumoir, right near the louvre - great for high tea around 3 or drinks at night.

A bit touristy but delicious - Laduree for pastries/tea. http://www.laduree.fr/

You will LOVE the Marais! And good lord, eat as many macarons and crepes as possible!

I hope you have a dreamy splendid time in France.

    cheers!

  74. I loved Paris, you will have so much fun! There are, quite literally, people walking through the streets eating baguettes. And it's amazing to see everybody and their style - they put so much more effort into themselves. And you definitely have to have pains aux chocolat, as well as tons of crepes. I hope you like creme fraiche, because it's everywhere! Luckily, I love it. :) I also ate more croissants than I've ever eaten in my life. And definitely go up the Eiffel tower! I'm also scared of elevators, but it was the experience of a lifetime. I also recommend a cruise down the Seine at night. It's absolutely stunning, and a real treat. Plus, it boasts a spectacular view of the Eiffel tower at night, which is so gorgeous when lit up (minus the light show, which is awe inspiring, certainly, but also a little tacky...)

    Enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  75. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!! so excited for you!! I'm going to Paris as well in June, also taking the dorky bike tour =D Let us know how you like the tour! are you doing the night tour or the day tour?

  79. I was just in Paris in December with my boyfriend. It was the most romantic trip of my life. Paris is so beautiful! It felt magical the entire time we were there! We didn't make it to the top of the Eifel Tower but we later regretted it, so go for it!

Go to Hotel Du Nord if you get a chance. http://www.hoteldunord.org/english.html
It was a really fun restaurant equipped with dancing waiters and delicious food! We had a blast here!

  80. make sure you'll pop in the new sort of charity concept store, ultra trendy, called Merci (11 boulevard Beaumarchais). you'll love it!
and if it's sunny, go have lunch at the "Marché des enfants rouges". It's unique (not so much for the food itself but for the atmosphere)

  81. Oh Paris...I was supposed to go there this past summer with my mom (the advice being to make your first visit to Paris to be with someone who will love you forever)...but then my little brother got sick.

  86. I just went last week over spring break with my mother.
Definitly watch the sunset from pont neuf (from the guide) it was beautiful. We only had two days in Paris so we made sure to get that one thing done from the list.
Then there is a lovely little cafe on the side opposite the henry statue where you can have a chocolate chaud or creme brulee and by the time you get out you can see the Eiffel tower sparkel in the night.

Thanks for referencing the guide in an earlier post, it was perfect.

    And have fun!

  94. When you're there, look for graffiti made out of tiles in the shape of space invaders! They're all over, and it's SO fun to spot them!! If you want more info I can send you pics :) (I know it sounds a little confusing just like that)

  95. I've been twice for a total of 5 nights. I HARDLY have the time to shop - so much to see.

I made my own walking tour past famous writers and artists apartments.

Rue de la Hutchette is great for crepes and check by jowl people watching and street food.

The book sellers along the Seine are great for antiques and prints.

There's a place on St. Andres des Arts that sell cool Pylone kitchen accessories.

    Have a nice time, JO.

I just got back from Paris on Monday and it was amazing. I had been before, but this was my first time with a man (my fiance, no less, I am getting married in just over a week!) Make sure you go up to Montmartre - I think the Parisians think it is cheesy but we loved it! The weather was gorgeous last weekend and we did a picnic in Place de Vosges with champagne. I think it was more official because we collected our picnic items from each individual store (boulangerie, charcuterie, fromagerie, etc) Also, you don't need to ride the elevator up the eiffel tower, just take the stairs! You get the best view from the first level and it is only around 300+ stairs. Have a great time!

I live right by the Eiffel Tower, it'd be a good idea for you guys to grab a baguette, some cheese, and wine and picnic at the park there à la parisien. I agree that you should check out Montmartre, especially on a Sunday, sit up by the Sacré Coeur, there's usually someone playing live music (like a sing along!) and doing crazy acrobatic things with soccer (I mean foot) balls.

I'm sure you'll have an amazing time, my boyfriend was here about a month ago and he/we LOVED it -- definitely the most fun I've had in the four years I've been here.

If you want any more tips about places to go/insider stuff, just leave me a comment.

Je vous souhaite un très bon voyage!

  123. Joanna, I happen to own those jeans (my very first pair of white denim - ooh, la la!) and they are terrific. The fit is impeccable. If I had one complaint, it's that I don't like the shape of the back pockets. But maybe I'm spoiled in the denim department.

Anyway - PARIS! Have a GREAT time. We can't wait to hear and see all about it :)

  140. Recommend the Eiffel Tower at night. After wine and cheese on the lawn (will make the elevator much easier I think) and right before they close so as not to have to stand in line. Plus the city looks amazing all lit up. Granted I have an affinity for cityscapes at night. Also Rick Steves recommends only going to the, second floor (I think it's the second floor) as the view is actually better when you're not so far up. I would agree. Did I already say this, or has another of my followed blogs booked time in Paris? Anyway, have an amazing time.

It's on Rue de la Huchette in the latin quarter, across from Notre Dame, there's several others scattered throughout the city too. It's going to be my first stop when I get there in May. You won't regret it : )
