Simon Evans
London-born, Berlin-based artist Simon Evans has the raddest exhibition right now at James Cohen Gallery in New York. The show's title is "Island Time," which is a nod to Robinson Crusoe and the handmade objects he needed to survive on a desert island. Evans implicitly compares being shipwrecked, to the role of the artist as an outsider, to his own experience living in a foreign city. There have been several works similar to "Everything I Have:" Margaret Stratton made a photographic inventory of all the objects in her mother's house back in the '90s (http://www.margaretstratton.com/Inventory_of_My_Mothers_House/index.htm); and in 2002 John Freyer published All My Life for Sale (http://www.lightwork.org/store/freyer.html), in which he photographed--then sold--every item in his home. Very interesting ideas, but it's good to acknowledge the precedents.
