How's this for a vacation fantasy: Hopping aboard the Windjammer in Maine, where you can take anywhere from two-day to two-week trips. You tell ghost stories and eat homecooked meals and keep an eye out for birds, seals and whales. "It's so completely different from anything resembling 'real life,'" says Lisa, whose brother runs the boat. "Being in a big schooner, kerosene lamps, games, rowing, swimming if you're brave, lots of wool, cute boys, excellent food, and pretty, pretty Maine."

sailing on my boyfriends TINY sailboat in Minneapolis' TINY lakes is so fun, I can't even imagine how great this would be... I'll keep this in mind for a trip one day!

One of the schools to which I was accepted for my grad work was in Maine. I declined, because I got scared of the winter {nights begin so late and the snow! I've only ever lived in NM and La!} To be fair, I wasn't just a coward: I was pregnant with my now-15 month old daughter, had a 4 year old son, and my husband wouldn't have joined us for a year while he was finishing his Bachelor's degrees. I elected to remain in NM where I was comfortable, but I have wondered many, many times if I made the right choice. I think so academically, but for my soul... I just don't know. Now I have a never-ending fascination with all things Maine.
