You absolutely MUST read Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston. It was written in 1937, but the story is timeless.

Read Pompeii by Robert Harris. Seriously. You will then make all of your friends read it, like I am doing. It's just that awesome.
I love the two-sided date story. And what a fun place for a first date!
Go vintage! I couldn't bear to spend the small fortune that most dress companies charge so I took to the second hand market. I wore a vintage Badgley Mischka dress that I found at Decades and have an unhealthy love affair with. It was a custom gown made for a celebrity (who is still hitched so I was feeling extra love) and I thought I would auction it off after our wedding. Surprise, surprise - it is still in my closet and I can not imagine parting with it after it all the incredible memories we made that day. I did however go to the Carolina Herrera's of the world and try on the gorgeous $13k dresses one Saturday morning with friends because you only get this one chance to do something so crazy!!

Hitting my scary age of 27 last August definitely caused me to recoil. The whole arriving at "late twenties" status is what did it for me. It just sounds old, doesn't it? A lot older than 26, anyway. My boyfriend likes to kindly point out that I AM old.
As for books, I can go on all day long. But for your sake I won't. :-) No Country for Old Men was positively heart-thumping and Atonement was an incredibly eloquent book that sparked my interest in WWII.
And HAPPY 30th BIRTHDAY! I'm sure it will be nothing short of amazing.

Oh wow, so much reading material. I'm so excited! (I've been looking for a few good new reads lately, looks like I fell into the pot!)
Have you ever read Little Chapel on the River? I read that around the same time as I read The Year of Magical Thinking, and while they are different books, they both left me wanting to encourage other people to read them.
There's two books that I recommend to anyone who ever asks for something to read - you can't go wrong with them, and if you've never read them I recommend you run out the door now and don't stop till you reach the bookshop. You wont regret it, I promise.
They're 'I Capture the Castle', by Dodie Smith, and 'Kim' by Rudyard Kipling. Both so different but inherently beautiful, you'll never stop thinking about them.
Two more modern books that were among my best reads of 2008 were Suite Francaise by Irène Némirovsky, which was written by a French Jewish woman even as she fled Paris during WWII. And 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society' by Mary Ann Shaffer, which sounds silly but was actually incredibly sweet and moving.

Happy 30th for the weekend Joanna, hope you survived?!- i turn 30 in 54 days, not that I'm counting or anything..... 27 was the one for me, not sure it was scary though... it was just supposed to be when everything 'happened'. And it didn't. Well, I shouldn't be so negative, I bought my first place then. But as a young child I always figured by 27 I'd be married and have had all my children. 54 days from 30 and I'm single and don't even own a pet rock....
