Wintertime Blues
Do you get sad in the winter? During the cold dark days, I often get quiet and melancholy, and I don't feel like myself. But this winter, I'm trying to brainstorm ways to make the season brighter and happier.
* hosting movie nights with friends
* making chili with lots of sour cream
* lighting candles
* going ice skating
* staring at a light box (we have one and it seems to work)
* drinking wine
* stringing white fairy lights all over the apartment
What do you do? I'd love to hear your tips. xo

fairy lights are cool
I personally love winter,
I don't know why.
what do I do? drawing and painting is my answer to everything.
i feel the same way. just renting a stack of movies andkeeping the lights bright in the house is helpful to me.
i'm the say way; i get a little sad when it's cold and dark out. but i refuse to let it take over at all this winter. what kind of lightbox do you have?
lighting candles for sure for us! I *heart the ambiance!* but you have to make sure they smell good! Yankee candles, or anthropologies have great ones like "hot buttered rum"!
*getting a cheap krauts espresso machine and making a eggnog latte, or steamed hot coco
*put cut berry branches in a vase
*fun new pillows for your couch/bed
*wear a comfy pair of PJs around the house when your home
*paint your nails a festive red or dark stylish color
I know they are random...but there things I love to do
xoxo
I love to go for a walk in Prospect Park at about 4pm to enjoy the last bit of daylight & get my nature fix at the same time.
I think I'll string some lights before the husband gets home tonight! I love it! thanks!
something baking in the oven is always the cure for me -- also, making a pot of mulled wine and having friends come over-- this is also the best time to spoon with the boyfriend! i love this time of year -- an excuse to OD on all things cozy
also - get a real christmas tree if you celebrate - the smell of pine throughout the apartment (along with something baking!) is amazing
winter is so short here i try to savor every second of it (it's about 70 degress already right now). i love warm fires and cashmere throws!
drinking wine
in front of the light box
while wearing a bikini...
would make the winter a bit better! :)
Yeah it's just something about the cold that makes you want to stay snuggled in bed and watch movies with a steaming mug of cocoa or a hot bowl of soup!
Baking is always fun!
you guys are so sweet. this is already making me feel cheerier. (seriously, i think alex was like, uh, what is going on here?) and jillian, i'm not sure what kind of lightbox we have...alex bought it ages ago. it's rectangular and super bright. it's pretty awesome, i would highly recommend them.
I get so happy in the winter! I'm actually doing the first one on your list tonight. And when it gets closer to Christmas we're planning to go see a childrens' ballet production of the Nutcracker (and before we go, I'm having them over for some--don't laugh--roasted chestnuts and some warm drink of which I haven't yet decided.) xo
I get S.A.D wicked bad.....I say try to get enough sleep. Keep the lights bright. Movie night is a great idea. Keeping really busy and productive but allowing yourself to cuddle up and relax too. Make the most of light hours on the weekend days...
Other than that hold on till March!!!
i'm going to miss daily bike riding, but i'm excited for this new ice skating rink opening up at the south street seaport- http://www.thenewseaport.com/main.cfm?actionId=globalShowStaticContent&screenKey=cmpIce&show=ABOUT&s=sss
other than that definitely hot homemade soups, delicious coffees, chai teas and maybe the donut plant a few blocks away!
I totally hear you - I'm lucky in that Boulder, while cold, is generally pretty sunny but that doesn't make up for it getting dark super early. I too have 'Happy Lights' which I flip on when I get home and leave on while I cook dinner, knit, do computer stuff etc. Just having them on really helps even if I'm not starting straight into them. I also make a point of being outside for about an hour a day - something about the natural light helps a lot.
i have the same problem. Here is what I find works:
1. Sledding. Giggle a lot. I go with my sister and a couple other friends just about every year and it always makes my entire week.
2. Hot cocoa when you are still chilled.
3. Game party with friends. Charades is great. Especially if there is wine as well.
Have fun!
I get them in January after the holidays when everyone has gone back to living a quiet life. The best therapy for me is a camera and I get out and take pictures of anything and everything. Then hot cocoa, lighting candles, making homemade soups and breads and visiting friends with young children. Nothing can make you laugh like babies or toddlers.
I loved all these suggestions. I love winter this time of year, it's about mid January that I start to feel a bit down. I need to try a light box, I've heard it really helps.
I get the same way, especially in January like some others have said - there is just NOTHING to look forward to. So a couple years ago, I hosted a "Winter Blahs" party where I decorated my home with white branches, pinecones, lots of candles & white lights...and had all "white" food - white chocolate fondue, coconut cupcakes, a light winter spiked punch...and of course cider & coffee & cocoa. It was really, really fun. Very cozy and very "let's party in the face of winter!"
I love winter but I know what you mean. I have been trying to come up with activities to help the winter along. I live in Toronto and there is an amazing spa called Body Blitz. It is a water spa for women that has different therapeutic waters like a sea salt pool, hot green tea pool and of course the cold plunging pool to help detox. I went last week and it was so relaxing. Body scrubs and massages are available, but if that isn't in your budget you can get a 5 day pass and use the pools/sauna/steam room to relax. That is what I have done. With all the running around I do, this is a really great way to force me to relax and commit at least 2 hours to my soul. I'm sure there must be something similar in NY. If you find one, let me know as I visit quite often. ;) Oh....and I've also taken up guitar and piano. Music is another great way to fill your dark winter hours. Plus you can play for friends or have a little jam after your dinner parties. Keep warm ladies!
wine + candles always make me feel *great* :)
I have kind of the opposite problem... I love the changing seasons, but living in Southern California, we don't get them. The sunshine gets to me after awhile and all I crave is snow and rain. Especially when it's 90 degrees in November. :(
me too! i've got a couple of ideas so far and it's good to know other people are also going to work hard at making the most of winter. perhaps someone should come up with a name for the effort. "no more winter blues '09"? or what about "2009: the winter of kidding myself"? nah. :)
here goes nothin' . . .
I do this over and over:
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0dCOvhi3vc8/SQxiShwSDsI/AAAAAAAACQ0/TKcgd386DFQ/s1600-h/table.jpg
always works :)
Volunteer
Just started working on a middle school newspaper through 826 Valencia -- kind of an awesome way to get out of the house once a week.
I find that taking a brisk walk before my day really starts for arond 30 minutes in the Bright Morning Light really sets my day off right, especially since it gets dark so early!
going to a cozy coffee shop at night and reading a book and warm baths always make me feel better about winter.
Great post. Studies actually show that depression rates rise during the winter in states where there is less daylight, temperatures drop, etc. My randomness for the day.
At our house, we love hosting game nights or card nights. Last year one of our friends often had Wii Parties too. Movie nights are always a good fall back too!!
you know, i have been crazy into the winter season this year.
even though it's super cold in new york already, seeing all the lights and decorations up in new york puts me in good spirits.
my advice to you: decorate!!!
go crazy, wild .. however you like!
gaudy garland & tacky tinsel, that's what i like!
ice skating will put you in good spirits, too!
mmm .. and don't forget about hot chocolate and movies.
you can't go wrong with that!
... or here's an idea:
think of winter's you had as a kid.
maybe try to recreate things you did or places you went >>> new york style.
cheer up, buttercup - it's almost christmas time!
i'm glad you did this post! i usually get a bit down in winter (and it's not even that cold and dark in Australia), but next year i'm going to SWEDEN in winter by myself...with 3 hours sunlight a day. don't know how i'm going to cope, but i'll be sure to try out these tips :)
i do get a bit seasonally depressed, yes, so i looove these ideas! i also like to host gift wrapping parties! :)
I have always had the winter blues, I think I have a hard time with it getting so dark earlier.
So I have also made plans this year with my friends to have a once a week dinner night at each others homes, and movie weekends with themes. That way we are making memories for the year.
I do get a bit down with the constant chill in my bones. The fairy lights do help. I put mine up as soon as Thanksgiving hits. I love my fireplace and use it often.
I hear you! I get SAD and sit in front of my lightbox and stuff myself on carbs all winter long, and make everyone else's life a living hell. I try to force myself to the gym on a regular basis, and although it is the last thing I want to do, I'd always feel energized afterwards, and a little less guilty about all the pasta I'd eat that night! Vitamin B shots help too. And chocolate. Lot's of it. Good luck!
I try to keep the lights bright in the house. My hubby and I are thinking of investing in a light box as well. I find I have to fly to florida in March when it gets to be too much. With the economy the way it is, I sure hope we can continue to do so!
Winter can be tough- sign up for a class, learn to snow shoe, volunteer that kind of thing helps. Planning vacations to warm locales help too!!x
God yeah I really hate the winter sometimes too. I don't mind the cold and all that, but it's the fact that it's now getting dark at 4 o'clock! I finish uni at 4 and by the time I catch the train it's pitch black
Anyway, I love to bake. I really comfort eats lots and lots in Winter. I am going to visit Ikea tonight to cheer myself up too - I hope they have christmas decorations in.
After christmas though there isn't much to look forward to - but last year I started training for a swimathon which was in April and I don't think I got as blue as I did other years!
I've been thinking about this lately - not so much the cold (it is obnoxiously 80-90 in LA still) but the dark. Getting dark by 5pm is so depressing. Thanks for the ideas to make things brighter!
To fight off the winter blues, I try a different varieties of teas, chai, and flavored creamers.
I also do homemade stove top potpourri. Boil water, reduce heat to low, then add any variety of cinnamon sticks, cloves, nutmeg, or other warm-smelling spices you may have lingering in the cabinet.
Wishing you a cozy winter!
i wear warm toasty sweaters that have luxurious feel on my skin.
i sit in the warmth of toasty socks, a deliciously warm beverage, some balls of yarn and my crochet needle. then i curl up and work on some yarnified craft. scarf, mittens, hat, blanket. you name it. it fills my heart with goodness.
we have family evenings where we read outloud and the rest listen. it brings us together and increases the children's vocabulary. those of us not reading can work on crocheting or what not.
baking. cooking. and more baking!
sometimes i'll work on my rag rug in the evenings. my toes long for some more cushion in the kitchen while washing dishes.
i shovel snow. i know. this is a paradox in terms. but nothing fills my heart with child merriment, like going out at night while the flakes are falling and the world is quiet... to shovel some snow and BE in it all. sure the snow is still falling. sure i'll have to shovel some more in the morning. but in that VERY MOMENT... it's just ME and the SNOW. :)
Getting outside helps me.
We do neighborhood poker nights! lots of wine, hot chocolate for the little ones...and FONDUE :)
I love a big, snuggly blanket, a warm fire, maybe some spiked cider & definately my now-famous Crab & Corn Chowder (post with recipe coming soon). Oh, and maybe a good movie - nothing too deep & meaning ful, and something that will only make me cry a little :)
Enjoy & get cozy!!!
I find doing stuff outside helps ... I never want to go outside, but once I bundle myself into my boots and puffy coat, and get out there, the cold air is like a slap out of myself and I feel so much better. Sean and I love to go cross country skiing in the park (so easy - easier than jogging or ice skating), then have a mini picnic with thermoses of hot soup.
I love the cold, but I do a lot of the previously mentioned things. I also put tons of whipped cream and cinnamon on my hot chocolate... It warms you from the inside, out. :-)
I feel like this winter is especially bad because of the current state of the economy. So many people I know are hurting.
So it's even more important to find the little things to enjoy! I totally agree with wine and putting lights up! I also drink Nutcracker tea (http://www.celestialseasonings.com/products/detail.html/special-occasion-teas/nutcracker-sweet), which I've turned countless numbers of people onto during the holiday season. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
The winter blahs typically hit me hardest come January. Lighting lots of candles, wrapping up in a large cozy blanket, drinking hot chocolate or tea in the evenings, getting outside even briefly when it's sunny, and spending more time reading all seem to help a bit. And sometimes indulging in a 30 minute nap when I get home from work helps too.
I definitely struggle with the grey rainy winters in Portland. Winter goes on forever here! Lighting candles is a huge help for me. I came across a swedish saying that is something along the lines of you either curse the darkness or light a candle. I guess I sort of took that to heart.
1. Bundling up with a sweetie and going for brisk walks as the sun rises or sets (depending on your sleep schedule!)
2. Watching how much pups love to frolic in the cold weather. The little steam puffs from their snouts are priceless!
3. Alternatively, admiring how good cats are at hunkering down for the winter. Don't you wish your fur would grow extra thick at the first cold snap?
4. Downloading LOTS of TV shows for those long cold evenings. Recent favourites include British gems like The Fixer, Spooks and Hustle, and also the Aussie hit 'Summer Heights High' which is now showing on HBO.
I am lucky enough to have a white brick fireplace in my condo. Me, red wine, knitting and watching Christmas Vacation while eating french toast for dinner. It happens. A lot.
Craft Night are a huge winner for me in the winter. Plus you get to feel inspired with all this art making happening around you.
White christmas lights are a must. Playing old jazz records in the morning when everything outside is quiet is also deeelightful. And of course, movie nights. I basically use winter to do all the fun home-y stuff I miss out on during the summer, when I'm outside all day/night.
Pumkin soup with lots of pepper and thick cream & chick filcks, (sitting in a wam place with the whole world arround me running off to work in the cold, i feel cozy and happy ...like im wrapped in a cocoon.
I like inviting over friends to play board games and drink wine. Now that we have a fireplace, it'll be that much cozier:)
I also am affected by S.A.D (seasonal affective disorder) and find that the best cure apart from getting out and about seeing people is actually getting into some sunlight once a day (clouds permitting). Here in Oz we get the 4pm darkness so lunch time is a great chance to go for a quick walk and recharge the vitamin D, and breathe "real" air. My husband laughs when he gets home on the "first sunny day in months" because I am positively alight with energy after basking as much as possible in the sun!
I focus on being with friends and family, the holidays, fun shopping, gingerbread house making, tree trimming, etc. After the holidays it's a bit harder, but then the days are getting longer after Dec. 21st, so that's always good.
aaw, fairy lights are magical!!! and i actually love winter :) chili with lots of sour cream sounds delish!!!!!this image is crazy beautiful :)
hot cocoa and a fireplace!
A great thing to keep your spirits up in winter is to get a sun lamp. It adds much needed sunlight and Vitamin D to your day and keeps the blues away.
warm vanilla sugar candles,a comfy down comforter, & a lovely film such as "a very long engagement" make my winter days a little more bearable. but i definitely hear ya missy, winter gets me down far too often!
baking baking baking! perfect for keeping the house warm and ever so entertaining and fun
I hate winter too. It's way too dark and cold. But you have the ultimate day "brightener" -- planning a wedding! Drinking helps too :)
I am the same way.. I love winter when the sky is clear at night, so I can look at the moon and the stars.. Somehow I feel all alone looking at them (but in a good way)...
I tend to listen to nice winter songs and enjoy good Holiday movies.
I love the photo by the way. It's so beautiufl:)
Wear bright scarves, mittens, sweaters, hats and coats. Stay connected to your friends. Drink coffee. Spend more time in the museums. Bundle up and take lots of wintry walks in Central Park. Nature is starkly beautiful this time of year and you can see so many more birds! xo
I tend to feel sadder en less energetic in winter too. This is what I do:
- Baking things that smell lovely, like apple pie with lots of cinnamon.
- Arts and crafts in front of the tv (with a nice movie on of course)
- Litting candles and scented candles (cinnamon!) when i come home from work
- I try to go outside as much as I can during daytime when it's sunny
Definitely fairy lights! We went over to dinner at the house of some friends. Their front window has plants on shelves (instead of curtains and is strung with fairy lights. It looks beautiful and definitely lifts the spirits!
yes, I have a serious case of the winter blah's!
Love all your tips for coming out of my cocoon this season. I love to meet up with friends for a matinee and a coffee afterwards on a rainy day.
Until we moved to our new house, I always got depressed in winter. Our house now is in the suburbs, nothing special. But it backs up to a 300 acre private property that is full of trees on a steep hill, and deer and squirrels are constantly passing. In winter, the carpet of leaves or snow looks even more beautiful than the summer leaves and grass. It has entirely changed my emotional state.
I love winter! We don't get snow here and it does not get too too cold but I love the blues and greys of winter. The lighting is different, the cozy feeling of coming home to a fire, etc...
I got myself a light that mimics a natural morning sunrise and makes my room light up over 15, 30, 60 or 90 min. I can't believe what a difference it makes.
such good ideas! my roommates just went ice skating in union square and i'm so excited to go too!
I'm usually saddest Jan - March. I think it's coldest here during those months and there aren't really any holidays to distract me.
move to california.
Last year I vowed to never let winter get me down again. In response to this promise to myself I started making and selling wool hats that are bright, whimsical and just slightly sarcastic. I love to make them. They make others smile if not giggle and best yet, the yarn keeps my fingers warm as I work.
When I finish a batch, I select my favorite for my collection and take a walk. The quiet after snow falls is so beautiful.
When i feel sad, i think writing helps. Somehow putting my thoughts down in black and white makes me feel lighter. It also helps to make plans to do something fun!! (shopping, weekend trip etc)
Great post! Although right now, it's not just the rain that's making me sad.. For the rain i have a solution(sun) jst 3hrs drive away... The rest of it... well a drive can't solve it!
I love your blogs(both smitten and this one)!
Thanks
Bisous
Carpet picnic! Rugs, beanbags, fire or heater, a platter of chocolate, fruits, cheese and crackers, wine, lollies - whatever tickles your fancy. It's all about nurturing yourself. Now if only I could take my own advice...
Hey, I just stumbled across your blog and I figured I would comment on this post. I get that SAD thing in the winter pretty awfully. Last year, I made a point to not get depressed during the cold months and replaced ALL of my light bulbs with full spectrum ones. (GE Reveal is quite cheap) It helped tremendously, as did drawing back all of the curtains if I happened to be home during the day.
Ice Skating
Oh yes...I used to hate winter. But now winter makes me happy. This is the gift that time has given me...an appreciation for the subtler of the seasons.
My favorite thing to do in winter is to go for long hikes in the deep snow. Runner up: put on flannel PJs and Norwegian socks and cut paper snowflakes with my husband.

This post was very topical for me as I am an Australian living in cold, wet London so I certainly get the winter blues. I had a think and have posted on the things that cheer me up (in particular cupcakes!)
Gourmet Chick, I'd trade snowy Berlin for rainy London any day! :)
I also have a cure for the winter blues (if you need another one):
Once a week (usually on Fridays) I meet two of my crafty friends at a nice café in our neighbourhood. We have coffee and cake. We are all bringing the current "projects" we are working on...knitting needles, sewing projects... We talk and laugh a lot. We watch other people, It's a trendy café, so there is a lot to see. A gazillion times better than sitting at home, watching the wall.
You'd soon miss a traditional winter if you lived somewhere sunny like Fuerteventura, Spain. I miss the Christmas songs played in stores, snow (although it is doing so in Madrid, so I've been led to believe), wearing a pair of tights with two pairs of socks. However, despite the sun, I feel the cold here & the only thing that makes me feel better is Whittard's Dreamtime tea and cuddles with my dog :)
I like to dress up and go for a run. And after I am done, have a nice, hot shower and then sit in front of a fire and relax.

I'm up in Toronto where it is so snowy and cold. I'm missing that beautiful sun right now. So to help the winter go along, I hosted a "Taco" night a my place last Thursday. I made homemade tacos (fried the corn tortillas myself) with all the fixings, spanish rice and plenty of Coronas with lime. It was so great, I decorated the table very festive with bright red and purple flowers and had red and purple tortilla chips. Easy to prepare too, just a lot of chopping. I also had salsa music playing on my itunes. We all felt like we were in a beautiful Mexican villa for the night!!
