What's your hangover cure?
Um, help. Last night, Alex and I had some friends over to watch the election. We celebrated Obama's win with sparkling wine and now my head still hurts. What are your hangover remedies? Does anything actually work? When we went to brunch recently, Jennifer Ward and her husband ordered giant Bloody Marys with V8. Hmmm, maybe a good idea right about now...

This has actually worked for me - before bed take 2 tylenol, primrose dietary supplement (from Trader Joe's) & alkaselter. Sounds like a crazy mix, but got it as a welcome gift at an out of town wedding once.

Force yourself to drink at least two large bottles of water before going to sleep, and take 4 advil. The trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night are worth it.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I have given up trying to drink champagne, prosecco or any sparkling wine - I invariably wake up feeling like someone's cracked me in the head with a bat, even after a few sips. That stuff is murder. Saddest days, but what can you do?
Drink a lot of water.

Carbs help too.

Greasy food (cheeseburger) and a Coke. Works every time.

I ate a baked potato the size of my head for lunch today and that seems to be soaking up the champagne that's still swirling through my system. :-)
ReplyDeleteDrink a glass of EmergenC before bed and keep a glass of water by the bed. Each time you get up to use the bathroom, drink as much water as possible. In the morning, wash down 4 Advil with another EmergenC. Definitely don't do any exercise and make sure that french fries are somewhere on your menu for the day!
ReplyDeleteI hear potassium is good for you, so I try to have a banana. I try to eat healthy and simple. Burnt toast if my stomach hurt. Gatorade and lots of water.
ReplyDeleteI also hear spicy food is good, makes you sweat it out.
Coca Cola and four ibuprofen. They're not good for you long-term but they'll sort you out the morning after. Avoiding dairy seems to help too.

Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Tea and Toast (but only when you're ready)
3. If you've vomited, Gatorade or Pedialyte
4. Aleve/Tylenol for headache
5. Other foods when you're feeling better
As we all know, the best method is prevention. Drink as much water as you comfortably can (i.e. not enough to make you queasy, but enough to re-hydrate you) before bed. And eat something. Going to bed on a belly full of booze, with no water and no food, is the worst thing one can do.

for me, drinking lots of water before bed helps, and a nice grilled cheese in the morning followed by anything greasy (pizza, bacon cheeseburgers... the worse for you, the better you feel!) and lots of water/gatorade during the day. my boyfriend swears by pedialyte and also enjoys the 'day-after' pizza like i do :)

ReplyDeleteSo if you were living in Canada the best cure for a hangover is the Canadian variety on the Bloody Mary, THE CEASER (much lighter and refreshing). Since you are not here though these are some of my hang over cures:
1. Advil (Migraine Specific Advil)
2. Sushi (the salt really helps)
3. Gatorade (as others mentioned) or Powerade
4. Watching a really cheesy Romantic comedy or horror, whatever works for you.
The REAL CURES THOUGH!
5. WATER
6. Hot BATH
7. SLEEP!

darn, Kimberly Julie already posted my answer. It's actually fried food- fried eggs + hash browns + I have found Waffle House to be the best. But if I don;t have a hang over- no thank you.

ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend swears by orange juice and chicken teriyaki, or if you can't get your hands on that just any greasy food in general. Oh and lots of water too. The worst hangover I had, I was feeling nauseous the next day and he told me to eat greasy food... I felt too sick to eat ANYTHING at that point but it actually seemed to help! :)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely Advil and lots of water before bed...and when you wake up. I also sometimes mix an Emergenc in with a Vitamin Water. That seems to help on really bad days!
ReplyDeleteI definitely second the advil and lots of water as well as bloody mary's. But whenever I get hung over I drink something with tons of sugar like Dr.Pepper and I feel better. Something about all that sugar is supposed to help.

ReplyDeleteOh, goodness, I ADORE Bloody Marys. They're my favorite drink! But I would recommend lots and lots of water, and aspirin if needed. That's the only thing that seems to work for me.

Pedialyte! It's what you give to babies/children to quickly rehydrate after vomiting and/or diarrhea. Works beautifully for adults to cure a hangover.

ReplyDeleteMy husband swears by the ol'Bloody Mary (if his preventative water before bed doesn't cut it,) but it doesn't always work for me... sadly, I often just have to drink lots of water, nap and wait it out! I wish I had an always successful cure-all! Hope you are feeling better now!
ReplyDeleteWish I could help! I always take 2 advil and water before bed if I've had a couple. If I've had a few and then some, well for one don't remember to take the advil and water, and I think I'm beyond help at that point anyway.

If it's after the fact and you forgot to take your Advil and drink your tall glass of water, then resort to this:

Advil or your strongest pain killer.
Lots of water for your dehydration.
And a Bloody Mary always does the trick for me...whenever :)
Nuun hydration tablets (you get them at sports stores, like gatorade but in an Airborne-like tablet), vitamin B12/B6 under-the-tongue tabs (I get them at Trader Joe's), and greasy food. Today it was Taco Bell.

I recently found that swimming in a waterfall makes for an excellent hangover cure. But that might not be so easy to find... maybe try finding a pool instead. Or do the usual greasy breakfast thing.

Not that I have felt a hangover for quite some time now (being 6 months pregnant) but my over-the-years favourite has been an antacid (Quickees or similar) with a painkiller (panadol or whatever). You often feel sick because of the acidic state your body is in (alcohol is v. acidic). Try it, you'll see!

eating two "toads-in-a-hole" (two pieces of toast with an egg fried in the middle of each, I know, I call it by the wrong name) with plenty of ketchup and a cinnamon banana smoothie is my fail-proof hangover remedy.
ReplyDeletealso, Function beverage brand makes this amazing drink called "urban detox" that you can get at any natural-ish stores. chug the whole thing and go back to sleep for an hour. you'll.feel.like.new. kind of.
also, people are scaring me here. you do not take acetaminophen (tylenol) when drinking or hungover, ibuprofen (advil, motrin) is MUCH better on your stomach. although with those toads, shakes and urban detox you shouldn't need any pills.

ReplyDeletetwo to three advil and 2 glasses of water before you go to sleep. a bloody mary in the morning (with extra spices so that your stomach will settle). spicy, spicy food. and finally, some sort of exercise... even if you feel like you have been hit by a bus. always, always works for me.
ReplyDeletethe best cure - so i was told last night - is the sauna. personally, i can't imagine actually being able to sit in the sauna long enough to do any good, but sweating out all of the toxins certainly helps a lot.
I don't have a remedy for a hangover, but that bloody mary looks good!

ReplyDeleteFirst time writing to you but long time reading you blog. Fist of all hello from Turkey. I usually have hungovers 2-3 times a month. Actually I dont recomment any pills because you stomach is alredy messed up, why use any drugs? Try dried sweet cherries for the headache, . They really work. and then just check any soup that contains vinegar. My mom makes chicken brest soup and we drink it with vinegar and garlic souce. Google it up:)!! But, if Im working the day after, I usually have greent tea with jasmineand low-fat cheese,tomatoes and bread for breakfast. Green tea is great for de-tox!They all work for mee :)

ReplyDeleteWeirdly enough, plain old Alka Seltzer is the best bet for me. I was always mystified at those "plop, plop, fizz, fizz" commercials as a kid, with the guy looking so haggard and an ice pack on his head. What was this stuff supposed to cure, I wondered. Then I realized it is nothing but a hangover cure. And a pretty good one.

Redwood (bar in Seattle) has a bacon bloody mary. I recommend a bloody maria (tequila instead of vodka) and some bacon on the side.

Eat a piece of burnt toast before you go to bed and wash it down with 2 glasses of water. The charred part of the toast is Carbon and absorbs most of the toxins that give a nasty hangover. Trust me it works.
