Supermarket Wedding Bouquets

Alex and I have a really small budget for our wedding. (Like, teeny.) So I was thrilled when my mom emailed me this handy guide to making wedding bouquets from supermarket flowers. Genius!

  1. that baby's breath bouquet is gorgeous. overall a totally do-able idea. what fun!

  2. Seriously Joanna, Why would you want to do it any other way! As soon as you add the word 'wedding' to a bouquet the price triples! I've been to my fair share of weddings and some of the budgets for the flowers have honestly been disgusting (and the flowers weren't that brilliant either!). You do not need to spend alot of money to have a kick arse awesome wedding, including brilliant flowers! Happy planning your special day xx

  3. thats great! im not a flower person so i dnt want to spend so much on my flowers. have fun planning take pics!

  4. I love these bouquets!

Some other ideas not using flowers could be interesting. I have seen beautiful bouquets made up of different shades of green leaves/plants. Some other thoughts come to mind depending on when your wedding is, a bouquet of beautiful fall color maple leaves still on small branches/twigs for a fall wedding or for winter white birch small branches/twigs with a touch of white glitter cluster at points to look like snow could be neat.

I bet if you gather your creative girlfriends to brainstorm over a bottle of wine some wonderful ideas will be created for a memoriable day!

    Enjoy the moments!

  5. We had a small budget too and didn't go too crazy on the flowers. My bridesmaids flowers were beautiful but I remember standing at the back of the church pulling ivy and flowers from my bouquet...it was not a great one! Go for it...these examples are soooo pretty!

  7. i got married in hawaii and had a teeny budget too. after the gown, the plane ticket, hotel, there wasn't enough money for flowers. thankfully, there is a sort of depot for flowers in honolulu where they sell flowers wholesale. i got several there and made my own bouquet and hair piece. i look photos of it now and honestly, its not that bad.

  8. Beautiful - I've had many friends who did this. It's such an easy way to save some serious money. The most important thing is to prioritize your wedding list and identify those things that are really important to you (for us, it was the photographer). You can be really creative in other areas to have a gorgeous and happy and inexpensive wedding. Good luck!

  9. My now sister-in-law got her wedding flowers from one of those big wharehouse stores. They talked to the florist there ahead of time so she would have what they wanted in stock for the big day. The flowers were beautiful and very fresh.
Congrats on your engagement! I am sure what ever you plan will be magical!

  10. So pretty! What a great idea :-)

  11. Those are gorgeous. How about appointing someone to go to the wholesalers to get flowers? In London, anyone can buy from the wholesalers, you just need to get up ridiculously early! I am sure whatever you come up with will be great. When is your wedding? All the beautiful fall foliage inspires me to just carry a bunch of leaves!

  12. Love it! When I was a kid my class had a unit on Japan, including Ikebana, the art of flower arranging. Perhaps that would be a fruitful Google search as well?

I also read that couples have used their bridesmaid's bouquets as centerpieces at the reception.

Flowers are lovely, but in 20 years I'd prefer for people to remember the experience rather than the vegetation. :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. completely do-able. i love the simple look of them!

also, i know a girl who is going to use limes and lemons with very little floral accents on the tables...i think everyone is trying to save one way or another with this market.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Flowers are definitely a way to save! We were able to do all of our flowers- 2 bride bouquets, 5 bridesmaids, 5 groomsmen, 3 mothers and 3 fathers for around $400. The key is to use flowers that are in season! The we used candles and the bridesmaid bouquets on the tables after pictures were done but before everyone made their way inside from the cocktail hour. Saving money isn't hard you just have to get creative!!

  15. but wedding are so much more fun to plan when you have a small budget!!!! seriously. you get to get giddy about the deals and sweet finds you come across and feel extra awesome when you score something for less. like these bouquets- so cool!

  16. these are all beautiful. simple and classic.

  17. I went to buy my bouquet the morning of the day we got married and the florist was horrified and suggested I should have preordered it weeks or months earlier :) All I wanted was a simple bouquet of shortstemmed roses and in the end after a lot of explaining it was what I got and it was perfect!
You're so doing the right thing!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Gorgeous! Happy planning for your big day!

    ReplyDelete
  19. this is such a great idea! my brother got married when i was younger and i remember being totally floored by the cost of the flowers (and there weren't even so many). i think that doing it this way would be so much more meaningful (not to mention kinder on your pocketbook).

    ReplyDelete
  20. Wow, I really love the second one, so simple and beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  21. All three of these are absolutely beautiful!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Another great suggestion is to get flowers at Costco ... they can order most anything for you, items are really fresh & a great price!

Also love the baby's breath one - so pretty & romantic!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Those bouquets look adorebale and very pretty!!!

I was in my friend's wedding and she chose ton of tealight candle instead of ton of flower (it was an evening affair). It was gorgeous!!

It's your wedding - it will be fantastic no matter what!!!!

  26. These bouquets are so pretty! We ordered the flowers for our wedding from FiftyFlowers.com and made the centerpieces and bouquets ourselves. It was so much less expensive and they turned out so pretty :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Join the club! We have a wee budget as well, so that we can go on a great honeymoon. Love the posts about making beautiful things with little dough!

I also think that carnations (aka dianthus -- isn't that a pretty name?) get a bad rap. They're actually quite old-fashioned and romantic.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love the pink carnations... they remind me of when Carrie in SATC said, "i hear pink carnations are gonna be the new thing".

    ReplyDelete
  29. What lovely bouquets - definitely doable though a practice run would probably calm your nerves! With all your NYC connections you could probably find someone who would be able to get you into a wholesale market for some of the harder to find flowers, though you can pretty much buy anything at the corner grocery in NYC! Good luck!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Go mom! What a great resource - and all three bouquets look fantastic, and fantastically easy to assemble.

    ReplyDelete
  31. These are gorgeous and surprisingly you can get some great stuff from the grocery store florist!

    ReplyDelete
  32. so pretty!! I love those purple ones.

  33. I like the 1st one - purple color :)

  34. Have you set the date?!

  35. they are all so beautiful! whole foods does remarkable flowers! a grocery store did the flowers for my rehearsal dinner and they were gorgeous! a tiny budget just motivates you to be that much more creative and original. xoxo

  37. Those are prettier than my wedding flowers which cost a small fortune!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oooh, those are lovely! Thanks for the link to the guide; my husband and I are doing a second ceremony soon and we're also working with a teensy budget. Flowers are something I love, but I'm not willing to spend thousands on them if I can do it for less. Go Jo's Mom!=) And of course, congrats on the upcoming wedding!!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. This was me, at this time last year.
I am so glad that I went the inexpensive route for flowers. It was one of the best wedding decisions we made!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I love that purple one, Congratulations on your wedding! I am sure you will be very happy!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Very nice!! Good ideas to DIY!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. My sister had a tiny wedding and picked up her own flowers from the flower mart the same a.m. My wedding was not so small but I found a girl who worked at Costco in their floral dept. and she did arrangements on the side but she got the flowers through them for wholesale. It turned out to be fun to work with her AND a good deal! The hip supermarket florist guy would have been WAY more expensive, and I didn't even ask at an actual florist. That stuff gets crazy pricey.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I am so glad you posted this - I had seen the baby's breath bouquet elsewhere and was trying to figure out how to DIY it myself - and now I think I'll do the carnations for my bridesmaids, too!

anyone have any other thoughts on ribbon color that would work well with baby's breath that isn't that grey they used?

    ReplyDelete
  54. More proof that one doesn't need an endless budget to throw a great wedding soiree!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Baby's Breath seems to get a bad rap, but I've always loved it. Those bouquets are beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I love love this. Carnations are an old fave of mine, since my grandfather grew them in his garden. I think their frills are lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  64. baby's breath & carnations - gorgeous!

  65. p.s.
i am still uber-excited that you're getting married! woot, woot, WOOT!!!
    you'll make a very beautiful bride :-D

    ReplyDelete
  66. Darling! If you like the softness of the carnations, but want to go for something a little fancier (but not OTT), have a look at old English garden roses. Beautiful, special, and not pricey.

(Please don't consider a bunch of carrots, which is what a friend is doing. Nightmare.)

  68. Perfect!

You already have so many great ideas, I cannot wait to see what you do.

You should do a book - memorable weddings on the cheap.

Because it's supposed to be about the marriage, not the wedding, right?

  69. I love that you are posting all these fun wedding entries! You must be sO excited!

I just wanted to share another $$ saver i think is a cute idea. My parents are caterers so I've seen a few million weddings in my 22 years. This one bride asked her closest friends/aunts/cousins who love to bake to create one homemade round cake for the reception. Instead of having sheet cake passed out, there was a different kind of cake at each table. The guests mingled around to try other tables cakes. The best part was that they were homemade by her own guests. She also used them as a center piece with cake stands of different heights. I'm not sure how big your wedding is going to be (or how many willing aunts you have) but just an idea!

    Good luck with wedding plans!

  70. I've planned events forever and teeny budgets just make you more creative! Think of it as a fun challenge. My best friend got her floral arrangements at a supermarket and they were beautiful. There are some photos of them on the post I did about her wedding, probably about a month old. I'm sure whatever you do will be fantastic:)

    ReplyDelete
  71. i love the look of those carnations all bundled in together! fabulous!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I got all my flowers from Trader Joe's and Costco for under $200 ( including bouquets for 10 girls!) I just picked from whatever they had in stock but it was a lovely look with each girl carrying a huge, fresh, different bouquet of all one flower. No one ever would have known that they didn't come from a florists, there were flowers in abundance and for so little! There are so many ways to DIY a wedding cheaper.

    ReplyDelete
  73. You can totally do your wedding on a budget--we did and loved it! Can't wait to see what you're going to do!

    ReplyDelete
  74. It's super easy to do! My hsuband did all the flowers for our wedding! We got married in Disney World and during a hurricane. Loads of problems the night before the wedding with the florist and husband sprang into action. Goodings Market in Orlando, Florida was AWESOME! They got us someone right away from the floral department even though it was closed already and we were able to make sure enough white roses and red roses came in the next days shipment. Husband got them bright and early. (wedding was at 9am so it was suppppper bright) and he got to work! It was the most amazing day of my life and I will remember it more so because so much love went into those flowers.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Wow!, that's just brilliant love the second bouquet.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Great bouquet pics!

The type of bouquets pictured are very easy to do, even for someone with limited floral design skills.

I just posted a how-to video I came across on putting together a hand-tied bouquet of fall flowers.

  79. I love this posting. Whole Foods definitely has some fantastic options. My sister purchased her bouquet there and we were really pleased. Just some gorgeous ribbon around the stems and voila!

    ReplyDelete
  80. I didn't have a bouquet! Not for me to hold, at least. There were flowers in the room, though. I didn't see a need for me to hold them; you have to hand them off, anyway, in order to do the ring exchange. I should also mention that I did not walk down an aisle; instead, when we were ready to get married, we called everyone to stand around the minister, my husband and me. It was wonderful to have a horse-shoe of all of our most beloved family and friends standing around us. Because I didn't have anything in my hands during the ceremony, my husband and I held hands - what could be better than that?!
