What it's really like to be a magazine writer

The lovely Jessie Cacciola interviewed me this weekend about what it's really like to be a magazine writer. If you're interested, you can read the interview in Imprint Magazine. Thank you so much, Jessie!

  4. Joanna (and Jessie!) - thanks for sharing this great interview. As someone trying (and trying and trying!) to embark on a writing career, I really enjoyed reading about your experience and advice. I finally had an Op/Ed piece published in The Star-Ledger a few months ago, and have been pursuing other publications (slightly obsessively) ever since. I read both this and your Smitten blog, and it was great to learn more about the writer behind them... Thanks!

  6. Hey, what a great interview! I've been at my mag job for a little over a year now so I'm still a newbie I guess you could say. I do remember graduating from grad school and job searching endlessly for a year after that (mind you I got my BA in architecture and only studied journalism for a year after that). I also took a free internship at TONY and kept looking for a full time. I pretty much started having nightmares about cover letters!

But all you need is that crack in the door to get in and then the ball starts rolling from there.

Now I'm starting to freelance at other places and networking. But it's such a great feeling to write and get published and see how other people respond to your work. Isn't it?

    Love your stuff :)

  8. Nice article! Sounds like hard work being a magazine writer. I do remember you always reading magazines as a young girl and always tearing out all the ADs first - then making up your own quizzes for the readers!

  12. What a great interview. I agree that it would be really sad if magazines dissapeared. The internet is great but nothing beats the weight of a magazine or book in your hands.
