we've been talking about getting a dog for a long time and have already named it lucy. we refer to it like "wouldn't that be cute for lucy." i'm not sure it is a funny name, or just weird behavior.

i agree! there was a german shephard named Albert at the dog park where i used to take my lab. i couldn't help but giggle every time his big owner bellowed across the field for him.

ReplyDeleteYep, like to do that too. Our old and sweet cat is called Zoé, and my old cousin's cat is even called Georges-Arthur (they couldn't decide for one!).
ReplyDeleteOur dog's named Romy, after the actress Romy Schneider. In French, you pronounce the R from the back of your throat. When my girlie tells her friends Romy's name, they always think she says "vomi" (vOmee) which is vomit in English. Other times, when my girlie calls "mommy," Romy comes running! Never thought of that when we named her...

ReplyDeletevery funny, like Bob! on the other hand, I find it kind of weird when people name their animals with a "Mr" or "Ms" like Mr. Fluffington, or something of that sort. ;)

ReplyDeletebeautiful kitty! i have a hector and a turtle (named after a character in 'the westing game'). i love regular names for pets, but you might not want to use ones that you also like for future children.

i named my hamster patrick when i was younger and people thought it was hilarious - but i thought he just looked like a patrick.

ReplyDeleteYes Matilda is sweeet! Perhaps she will be called Tilly for short? My friend has a cat named Mary Jane. When I lived in London I lived in a house with a cat named Brian. And when I lived in Cornwall we had a cat named Archie. My friend had a cat called Kitty but her real name was Rita.

ReplyDeleteMy husband and I were tickled by the idea of naming a pet after one of our brothers/sisters and then when our siblings would visit we could yell out the dog's name and watch them jump (the sibling!) It really made me laugh to think about. ahh..the simple things.
i love human names for pets. . .bob and george are a couple of my favs. my husband had a very sweet yellow lab named molly, she was the best!

I so want to name my future dog with an old man name like Art, Walter or Waldo. If it's a girl, I'll try to give her a old lady name. Them old people have the coolest names; )

I'm not a cat person, but that's a darn cute cat. I had a friend in middle school who always wanted a gold retriever named Barbara. I thought that was the funniest thing ever.

ReplyDeleteJo...my partner's ex grew up in a large family with a dog and a cat. The cat was named Karen and the dog was named Stephen. In theory it sounded funny, but the reality was cold and sobering. Though I did think once about naming a cat Khrushchev. Then I googled and thought better of it. Hmm...it would appear that I am taking something WAY to seriously. I will shut up now. ;)

ReplyDeleteI often name my cats based on the first thing that popped into my mind. When I was 4, my cat was simply 'Cat'. Now there are Rupert, Timothy, Lincoln & Michael (after the Prison Break hotties), Monochrome (because she's black & white) and Toyplane (my dad's favorite and he was the one who named it).
I think we are weird.

Our parrot's name- Mike- our dog's name is Dexter Hoofnagle. Both have more dignity than our cats who are named after food. Is it all in a name- I think so.

ReplyDeleteYou have to be careful with pet-names though - don't use up your baby-names ! My girlfriend named her cat "Charlotte", then got pregnant and wished she could still use "Charlotte" as she loved it that much, but it was now 'a cat's name'.
Anyway, she had a boy :)

ReplyDeleteMy cousin names his pets after the people who give them to him or are there when he gets them. He currently lives with Steve the cat and Boris the dog.
I also have a friend whose family had four dogs in a row called Kathleen.
My brother once had a chinchilla called Roy. It broke its leg and then proceeded to repeatedly gnaw it's bandage off...much to the annoyance of my mother! She was the one who took it back to the vet whilst my brother was off out galivanting!

ReplyDeleteMy pets have all had human names -- Roger, Holly, Hugo, Maggie ... the only time I deviated was when I named my pet rat Kitty, which was only for the shock value of calling "Here, kitty, kitty," and having a rat come running.
