we've been talking about getting a dog for a long time and have already named it lucy. we refer to it like "wouldn't that be cute for lucy." i'm not sure it is a funny name, or just weird behavior.
i agree! there was a german shephard named Albert at the dog park where i used to take my lab. i couldn't help but giggle every time his big owner bellowed across the field for him.
Our dog's named Romy, after the actress Romy Schneider. In French, you pronounce the R from the back of your throat. When my girlie tells her friends Romy's name, they always think she says "vomi" (vOmee) which is vomit in English. Other times, when my girlie calls "mommy," Romy comes running! Never thought of that when we named her...
very funny, like Bob! on the other hand, I find it kind of weird when people name their animals with a "Mr" or "Ms" like Mr. Fluffington, or something of that sort. ;)
beautiful kitty! i have a hector and a turtle (named after a character in 'the westing game'). i love regular names for pets, but you might not want to use ones that you also like for future children.
i have separate lists for pets and babies, although they're pretty similar in tone.
Yes Matilda is sweeet! Perhaps she will be called Tilly for short? My friend has a cat named Mary Jane. When I lived in London I lived in a house with a cat named Brian. And when I lived in Cornwall we had a cat named Archie. My friend had a cat called Kitty but her real name was Rita. Oh Jo by the way I was in a cafe the ther day reading Australin Marie Claire and I saw your article on the people who love and wear just one colour. It was so cool to see it in print! :)
My husband and I were tickled by the idea of naming a pet after one of our brothers/sisters and then when our siblings would visit we could yell out the dog's name and watch them jump (the sibling!) It really made me laugh to think about. ahh..the simple things.
I so want to name my future dog with an old man name like Art, Walter or Waldo. If it's a girl, I'll try to give her a old lady name. Them old people have the coolest names; )
I think Matilda is the name of the cat (so cute!) at the Algonquin hotel in Manhattan. You should check her out - she hangs out on the suitcase trolly!
I'm not a cat person, but that's a darn cute cat. I had a friend in middle school who always wanted a gold retriever named Barbara. I thought that was the funniest thing ever.
We should definitely name our pets after human names, after all we treat them as part of the family. :) And Matilda is SO cute. *runs to pet my cat Eichee*
Jo...my partner's ex grew up in a large family with a dog and a cat. The cat was named Karen and the dog was named Stephen. In theory it sounded funny, but the reality was cold and sobering. Though I did think once about naming a cat Khrushchev. Then I googled and thought better of it. Hmm...it would appear that I am taking something WAY to seriously. I will shut up now. ;)
I don't like cats in the least, but when my parents were first married they had two cats named Dave and Steve, and I always thought that that was sort of awesome.
I often name my cats based on the first thing that popped into my mind. When I was 4, my cat was simply 'Cat'. Now there are Rupert, Timothy, Lincoln & Michael (after the Prison Break hotties), Monochrome (because she's black & white) and Toyplane (my dad's favorite and he was the one who named it).
Our parrot's name- Mike- our dog's name is Dexter Hoofnagle. Both have more dignity than our cats who are named after food. Is it all in a name- I think so.
I know exactly what you mean. I've always wanted to name my dog Santiago, which is a very very human name here. My dog is named Iago, after Othello's villain.
Cute kitty! I was talking to a friend last night who was thinking about naming a stray cat they'd found 'Ida'... I definitely giggled at that - sounds more like the name of an old lady who would have a g'zillion cats!
You have to be careful with pet-names though - don't use up your baby-names ! My girlfriend named her cat "Charlotte", then got pregnant and wished she could still use "Charlotte" as she loved it that much, but it was now 'a cat's name'.
Matilda is a great name for a cat, ours is Margot Tenenbaum, but usually just Margot for everyday. My in-laws persist with male names like Barney, Bert, Biff and Benson. Very Of Mice and Men...
My husband is obsessed with naming pets with human names-- he won't accept any adjectives! All of his childhood cats were named things like Tom, Eddie and Max while his sister and mom's cats were Fluffy, Scruffy and Hoagie. Hah.
Such a precious kitty. My cousin names his pets after the people who give them to him or are there when he gets them. He currently lives with Steve the cat and Boris the dog. I also have a friend whose family had four dogs in a row called Kathleen.
My brother once had a chinchilla called Roy. It broke its leg and then proceeded to repeatedly gnaw it's bandage off...much to the annoyance of my mother! She was the one who took it back to the vet whilst my brother was off out galivanting! I knew someone at school called Roy who was also very irritating!
My pets have all had human names -- Roger, Holly, Hugo, Maggie ... the only time I deviated was when I named my pet rat Kitty, which was only for the shock value of calling "Here, kitty, kitty," and having a rat come running.
we've been talking about getting a dog for a long time and have already named it lucy. we refer to it like "wouldn't that be cute for lucy." i'm not sure it is a funny name, or just weird behavior.
ReplyDeletesuch a cute cat!
ReplyDeletewe have a cat named Chuck and everyone seems to giggle when we tell them his name. he's a silly cat. :)

ReplyDeleteI think Timothy and Susan are hilarious names for a pet.
ReplyDeleteThat is the cutest cat I have ever seen in my life!
ReplyDeleteYep, like to do that too. Our old and sweet cat is called Zoé, and my old cousin's cat is even called Georges-Arthur (they couldn't decide for one!).
ReplyDeleteOur dog's named Romy, after the actress Romy Schneider. In French, you pronounce the R from the back of your throat. When my girlie tells her friends Romy's name, they always think she says "vomi" (vOmee) which is vomit in English. Other times, when my girlie calls "mommy," Romy comes running! Never thought of that when we named her...

ReplyDeletere: very human name
i love charlie and really love henry.
i've told my best friend, tobias, that if we are lucky enough to adopt a third rescue dog, we are going with the name tobias : )
I so want to name my future dog with an old man name like Art, Walter or Waldo. If it's a girl, I'll try to give her a old lady name. Them old people have the coolest names; )
ReplyDeleteI think Matilda is the name of the cat (so cute!) at the Algonquin hotel in Manhattan. You should check her out - she hangs out on the suitcase trolly!
ReplyDeletetoo cute! my mom just got a dog, and named him dave...and it's david when he's in trouble :)
ReplyDeletethis cat is awesome!!
ReplyDeleteApparently, soul-wise, you are supposed to name your cat with a proper name rather than Tibbles or Ginge.
ReplyDeleteDarling cat!
i named my cat Filiberto (Philibert in spanish, but his pet name (jeje) is Filito...
ReplyDeletejajaja
ypu should check on TS Eliot 'The Naming of Cats' poem
ReplyDeleteWhat a cutie!
ReplyDeleteone of our pugs is named Frank & it always makes me giggle... :)
my best friend's little sister, camila moreno (moreno is her last name), named her dog: camilo moreno, hahaha, surname included.
ReplyDeletethen she named another dog simply: juan.
both names made me laugh so much :)
Hello beautiful kitty. It's nice to meet you! Oh, so cute!
ReplyDeletecute kitty!
ReplyDeletea japanese friend of mine living in Japan had a dog named Kevin (in the 90's, named after Kevin Costner)
I'm not a cat person, but that's a darn cute cat. I had a friend in middle school who always wanted a gold retriever named Barbara. I thought that was the funniest thing ever.
ReplyDeleteWe should definitely name our pets after human names, after all we treat them as part of the family. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd Matilda is SO cute. *runs to pet my cat Eichee*
exactly the reason i once named a pet frog Allen...
ReplyDeleteJo...my partner's ex grew up in a large family with a dog and a cat. The cat was named Karen and the dog was named Stephen. In theory it sounded funny, but the reality was cold and sobering. Though I did think once about naming a cat Khrushchev. Then I googled and thought better of it. Hmm...it would appear that I am taking something WAY to seriously. I will shut up now. ;)
ReplyDeleteFurry children--dogs, Katie and Zoe along with cats, Greta and Gabby.
ReplyDeleteI don't like cats in the least, but when my parents were first married they had two cats named Dave and Steve, and I always thought that that was sort of awesome.
ReplyDeleteI have a cat named Sara. She's a very sophisticated lady.
ReplyDeleteThe cat is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI often name my cats based on the first thing that popped into my mind. When I was 4, my cat was simply 'Cat'. Now there are Rupert, Timothy, Lincoln & Michael (after the Prison Break hotties), Monochrome (because she's black & white) and Toyplane (my dad's favorite and he was the one who named it).
I think we are weird.
toy plane is so awesome.
ReplyDeleteMatilda is SO flippin' cute. And she is named after one of my all-time favorite literary characters!
ReplyDeletePS I have always loved the idea of giving a pet a human name.
"Where's George?"
"Oh, he's in the litter box doing his thing."
Our parrot's name- Mike- our dog's name is Dexter Hoofnagle. Both have more dignity than our cats who are named after food. Is it all in a name- I think so.
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean. I've always wanted to name my dog Santiago, which is a very very human name here. My dog is named Iago, after Othello's villain.
ReplyDeleteHello Matilda! You are adorable!
Matilda is completely adorable! Once met an older couple who named their dogs "Jeff" and "Tonya."
ReplyDeleteCute kitty! I was talking to a friend last night who was thinking about naming a stray cat they'd found 'Ida'... I definitely giggled at that - sounds more like the name of an old lady who would have a g'zillion cats!
ReplyDeleteI had a friend who had a goldfish called Tony when she was a kid.
ReplyDeleteThat's always made me laugh - such a manly name for a wee little fish!
xxx
My mind blew up a little at the excruciatingly cute kitty.
ReplyDelete<3333
I have a cat and his name is "Bob".
ReplyDeleteYou have to be careful with pet-names though - don't use up your baby-names ! My girlfriend named her cat "Charlotte", then got pregnant and wished she could still use "Charlotte" as she loved it that much, but it was now 'a cat's name'.
Anyway, she had a boy :)
Ok. I want one! I got in trouble at work once on the Whiskas website trying to decide what cat I wanted.... What breed is it?
ReplyDeleteMy friend has a dog called "Craig" - I laugh everytime. Who calls their dog "Craig"!?!
she's a persian xo
ReplyDeleteI know a cat named Roger
ReplyDeleteMatilda is a great name for a cat, ours is Margot Tenenbaum, but usually just Margot for everyday. My in-laws persist with male names like Barney, Bert, Biff and Benson. Very Of Mice and Men...
ReplyDeleteHuman names are good for animals, I want a jack russell named arthur. But instead I have a little dog named Nacho. Which isn't bad either.
ReplyDeleteI had a friend who had a dog named "Megan." I thought that that was the funniest name for a dog.
ReplyDeleteMegan?
this cat is stinkin' adorable!!! How could you not just love Matilda?
ReplyDeleteI had a cat that I named Tom...Cruise.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, Matilda is too adorable...
ReplyDeletei like the name brandon for a dog.
ReplyDeletewhat an adorable cat, I always loved Oscar for a cat name :)
ReplyDeleteMatilda is just too adorable, and I'm loving these pet names in the comments! Fwiw, we have a cat named Stephanie :-)
ReplyDeleteWe love Matilda !!!
ReplyDeleteThe softpaws living with me are Amelia, Lucia and Nero :-)))
2 Italian girrls and 1 American boy, all rescues/pure street.
We had a lovely collie-x named 'Trevor' - he suited his name! :)
ReplyDeleteA dog named Trevor and a fish named Tony - genius. My friend has a cat named Dave, which i think is perfection :-)
ReplyDeleteMelissa looks so cute ! I want the same one
ReplyDeleteMy husband is obsessed with naming pets with human names-- he won't accept any adjectives! All of his childhood cats were named things like Tom, Eddie and Max while his sister and mom's cats were Fluffy, Scruffy and Hoagie. Hah.
ReplyDeleteoh Matilda is so sweet!
ReplyDeleteSuch a precious kitty.
ReplyDeleteMy cousin names his pets after the people who give them to him or are there when he gets them.
ReplyDeleteI knew someone at school called Roy who was also very irritating!
I want that cat! Only her name would be MINX! At least I kept the "M" part... LOL!
ReplyDeleteMy pets have all had human names -- Roger, Holly, Hugo, Maggie ... the only time I deviated was when I named my pet rat Kitty, which was only for the shock value of calling "Here, kitty, kitty," and having a rat come running.
ReplyDeleteI have a cat named Mike and another named Earl...they seemed like good solid names. But, I've always wanted a cat named Loretta.
