The new documentary American Teen follows five high-school seniors--a jock, princess, heart-throb, geek and misfit--in a small Indiana town. It comes out on July 25th and looks good, don't you think?
I always love movies like this, but they usually profile white, middle class kids, which is such a small segment of American teens. I understand budget and travel issues, but I think it would be more telling to include students of different races and classes.
I saw this at a screening in L.A. last week-you will not be disappointed. The kids from the movie were there to introduce the film-everyone will fall in love with Hannah Bailey!
When I first saw this I didn't think it looked very good at the beginning, but then by the ending of the trailer where they play happy music I was hooked. Basically any trailer that uses happy music or a song by the Cure will guarantee that I see the movie.
Yes, I can't wait to see it. I got a post card in the mail about the premier at Lincoln Plaza. The teens themselves were there to answer questions. I could not go but I bet it was fascinating. I love that stuff. I just watched a docu called "Country Boys" that follows two boys through high school in a rural depressed appalacian town in Kentucky. It was really interesting and surprising. We're really lucky.
I caught this at Sundance this year (you don't know how long I've been wanting to say that!). Very worthwhile. And you'll probably get to see it in a theater with plenty of knee room!
Wow, that one really looks rad. I remember watching The Breakfast Club maybe three years ago, when I was in high school. And I was so happy, because I felt like the misfit-character then, but while watching the movie I realized: "uh, actually I think Alley Sheedy is the neatest one of them". And it made me feel like it was all-right to be like that. So yay for high school movies with lots of identification-possibilities.
i hadn't heard of this, but the trailer made my stomach flip so it has to be good. thanks for the intro. :)

Looking forard to seeing this, but so glad I'm not a teenager in today's world. By comparison we had it easy in the 80s.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first I'm hearing of this movie. Thanks for posting about it. Which one of these labels applied to you in high school?
