Why am I marrying him?
Kate Hutchinson, a Montreal-based photographer, has a fascinating on-going series called “Why Am I Marrying Him?” She photographs her fiancé going about everyday life; and the photos portray her internal deliberation, as if she is truly watching him to figure out if marriage is the best next step.
Far from being saccharine, the series feels quietly provocative and hugely relatable to anyone who has ever been in a serious relationship. And I love how she seems wary of a wedding, instead of clamoring for it, which is how popular culture usually (annoyingly) portrays women. Check it out here, and let me know what you think...

thanks for sharing this. It's such a quiet, contemplative series, with the occasional jolts of simple humor.
We really do get the sense of her evaluating his foreverness; we see his good sides and bad sides, and his in-between sides. It reminds me of 2 days in Paris (Julie Delpy could definitely have been behind this camera). =)

no, not every woman wants to get married. its just that we live in a very paternal society and its just an idea that has hung around for too long.
I love this idea. Her fiance looks so different in the various pics. I must say that I enjoyed her Irish grandmother series even more though.
Thanks for sharing! Great post.
Great post, and thanks for bringing this forward, and for your insights also.
I really enjoyed looking at these photos. "Quiet and contemplative" is what Jesse Cacciola wrote and I think you put it perfectly. It's also very intimate and perfectly captures how we look at and evaluate our significant others on a daily basis. Thanks so much for sharing this, I really enjoyed it.
Joanna, I, too, posted on Kate's series, after reading her interview at The Year in Pictures. I find it all fascinating. It's like he can't escape his boyishness and sense of perplexity however hard he may try to be an adult.
P.S. I think you should post a Young Me, Now Me picture of you!
Completely love this idea. Many of my friends are getting or wanting to be married, and I don't feel at that place yet. I'm 25 in a 2 year relationship and still don't feel ready for marriage! I love that she is contemplating it rather than just diving into it because society says it is the next step.
talk about girl crush...she's rad. he's a great sport.
That series is amazing, as someone in a long-term relationship, I catch myself looking at my boyfriend in the same light. The Irish Grandmother series was wondeful as well.
Love it - and so true. In the era of "Bridezilla's", it's refreshing to have a look at it (marriage/weddings) from another perspective. And the pictures are great.
I love this. Thanks for sharing.
But does HE know he's the subject of so much public debating? I'd find it very humiliating if I were him...
I think that's the whole point of Kate's message. It's not solely Chris she is photographing. I love how Kate said:
"In fact it definitely would have to be disqualified from the documentary category since most of the images were directed. If it were a documentary then it would make perfect sense for all the facts about the person and the situations that he is in be made known to the viewer. Instead this project is meant to be the sketch of a personality. It is meant to shine a light on the typical early 30s North American white male, and how he interacts with the world around him."
What great shots, thanks for sharing! I love how the photographer captures these men in seemingly 'flawed' states (one with his belly hanging out, the other hopelessly addicted to his video game) but still manages to depict them in a beautiful light. They're earnest, thought-provoking and I think her series is fascinating, and one that I hope to follow.
amazing blog! i've never been on it before, i love it.
fyi, found you through please sir.
a great series and very interesting & thought provoking. i agree that seeing her contemplate the reasons for (and against) marrying someone is refreshing & how it should be. excellent post.
thank you, little bird! i'm so glad you flew over. xo
i really like this work - it resonates because i'll be getting married in a few months. my first reaction was that she wasn't really assessing whether or not she should marry him, but these are the reasons she has chosen him. perhaps it is a play on that role where women were once chosen as marriage material, but now things have changed.
it's quite evocative.
does he know that she's having 'doubts'?
I'll keep it simple: I love your blog
Her photograph series are fantastic...but I really love this one in particular. The concept is amazing...
I think our society puts way to much pressure on young people to get married and have babies at a time when we are just figuring out who we are and how we fit into society. {Not that I am against either activity, I just don't think they are the end all be all of existance.} Moreover, I love the idea that she is sort of deciding if this is the right thing to do by capturing individual moments...so perfect.
Thank you for this...
I'm so glad you posted about this photographer! I'm truly enamored with this particular series, and some of the photos that appear in her "places and things" section are nothing less than amazing.
Hey, love the blog. In all craziness though, I checked this link out and realised that she must be my friends cousin as the irish grandmother is my friends grandmother too. What a bizarrely small world!!
Just found your blog and I love it.
This series is particularly fascinating, thanks for sharing.
As woman planning her wedding I have to say I love love this idea. I always think that when I am looking at O picking his nose, all.the.time. And I am not clamoring for a big wedding and commitment, so I have had a long time to look at him and ponder, I hope she learns what she wants to learn, and I hope that other ladies can be objective about this huge decision.
funny how these things take a life of their own in the blogosphere http://zund4p.tumblr.com/post/32421627
would be fun to see a collection of other approaches to this "why am i marrying (him/her)?" concept.
I think this was a very creative way to contemplate marriage. I enjoyed reading this.
