Wedding First Dance

Dear readers, my friend has a pressing question: What is a great wedding first dance song? She is getting married in August and is looking for a romantic song, but all the ones she likes seem to have depressing lyrics! Any ideas, my lovelies?

  1. that's a hard one, i've always though beautiful tonight by eric clapton should be in there somewhere. but, i'm not sure about for the first song.

  2. I feel a bit silly suggesting 'The Book of Love' by the Magnetic Fields because it was in 'Shall We Dance', but I still love it so much.

We didn't have a first dance song at our wedding, but that would have been a contender.

Dump's cover of 'Everlasting Love' is very sweet (kazoos!), and I'm sure there has to be something by the Kinks that would be lovely...

I'm not a huge fan of Bright Eyes, but 'First Day of My Life,' is really touching.

  3. We used "Breathe Me" by Sia for our first dance song, because it's "our song."

Another good choice is "The Luckiest" by Ben Folds.

My suggestion is that she use a song that means something to her and her fiance.

    ReplyDelete
  4. "Heavenly Day" by Patti Griffin is one of my favorites! Or how about "These Are The Days" by Van Morrison?

    ReplyDelete
  5. i LOVE first day of my life. funnily enough, it's the only bright eyes song i own (and maybe have even heard), but it is so beautiful.

  6. Gavin DeGraw has a couple of good ones, "More than Anyone" and "Meaning" are good, but better from his "chariot stripped/acoustic" album.
There is always "Grow Old With Me"...and even though it's cheesy, I really like "Look After You" by The Fray, because I think it's so romantic and has a great beat for slow dancing.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Ours was "Wander Where You Wander" by Rebecka Törnqvist. It'll make everyone mist up :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. I like "At Last" by Etta James. It's always struck me as a perfectly romantic song for a wedding.

    ReplyDelete
  9. these are a little fast-paced, but it might be fun to play:

Can't Take My Eyes Off You, Frankie Valli
You Are the Sunshine of My Life, Stevie Wonder

    ReplyDelete
  10. is this first dance for the couple?

if so, Songbird by Eva Cassidy. such a beautiful song and such a beautiful voice

    ReplyDelete
  11. Ours was 'Love Me Tender' by Elvis. I also love 'Sunshine of My Life' ... that was a contender.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I agree with "At last"...I walked down the aisle to it...
or "What a wonderful world" or "you belong to me" bob dylan...so fun and stressful to pick the special songs

    ReplyDelete
  13. I love Ryan Adam's song "Two". I'm an indie-a-holic, but I do love this song so much. It's a little indie, mostly acoustic. It's really beautiful and when I listen to it- and hear his voice... I get goose bumps.

    I also love Radiohead's - All I Need
Landon Pigg, Falling In Love At A Coffee Shop
    Elton John... Your Song
    David Gray.. This Year's Love
    Nick Drake.. Northern Sky

:) And congrads to the happy couple!

We used "Garden in the Rain" by Diana Krall...still sends shivers down my spine to hear it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. We danced to "Ice Cream" by Sarah MacLachlan ("your love is better than ice cream ... "). But that *was* 13 years ago.

Oh, and my husband walked up the aisle to the Pixies' "Here Comes Your Man." That was fun.

Aussie artist LIOR - "This Old Love".... just beautiful!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. "By your side," Sade...
    - Jessie -

...or a slow acoustic version of a classic rock song, making it sound sweeter while maintaining the rawness that rock captures so well -- it would be familiar, but wouldn't sound overplayed.

a friend just emailed with the suggestion:
Try Frank Sinatra's "Polka Dots and Moonbeans" ...the 1961 recording.

    ReplyDelete
  26. ...ooo, "have i told you lately," Rod Stewart!

or take it way back with Louis Armstrong's "you go to my head" for something really slow.

    ReplyDelete
  27. My sister used the oldies song "Sea of Love" by Phil Phillips, but there is also a new version by Cat Powers. Great, happy love song!

    ReplyDelete
  28. It's an oldies song that isn't often played, but it's just dreamy and sweet and the lyrics are perfect for a wedding/first dance.

"Let Me Love You" by George Goodman and the Headliners.

An mp3 for preview can be found here:

    http://www.thedoowopjukebox.com/
    july05/Let%20Me%20Love%20You%20-%20
    George%20Goodman%20&%20Headliners%20'
    65%20Val-1.mp3

    And the lyrics are:

    "Take me in your arms,
    and let me love you.
I just want to love you
for the rest of my life.

    Hold me oh so close
    and look into my eyes
    I need you to realize
that you really love me too.

I want to give you all my life
Darling, how am I to do this
unless you take me in your arms
    and love me?

    Take me in your arms
    and let me love you.
I just want to love you
for the rest of my life.

I, yes, I want to give you all my life.
Darling, how am I how to do this,
unless you take me in your arms
    and love me?

    Take me in your arms
    and let me love you.
I just want to love you
for the rest of my life.

For the rest of my life."

You really have to hear the song to get the full effect, but it's incredibly romantic.

    ReplyDelete
  29. What about John Lennon's song 'God Bless Our Love?' Sooo beautiful!

    ReplyDelete

  40. How about "Prettiest Eyes" by Beautiful South or "I Will" by the Beatles? I really and truly love those songs.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Anonymous12:18 AM

i've never been married, but one day i'd like to chose between-
"the book of love- the magnetic fields
"i found a reason"- cat power
    or "wild horses"

    ReplyDelete
  42. "Here Comes the Sun" by George Harrison.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Sorry this is so long. Here are some suggestions, off the top of my head:

I'm a big fan of humility, so the idea of this song being played at a wedding is so touching. It's called "I go to the barn," by Band of Horses. Here's a sample of the lyrics:
"Outside, by your doorstep, in a worn-out suit and tie. I'll wait for you to come down, where you'll find me, where we'll shine."

"Masterfade" by Andrew Bird is adorable and very couple-oriented.

"The Very Thought of You" - Billie Holiday's version

    "Ice Age" - Pete Yorn

"Don't Let it Fade" - Sunday's Best ("trace around her lips, with his fingers he tries to draw on a smile...now she's all he sees, he stays awake to watch her breathe the unheard melodies, grace notes of her restless sleep. Hold me now, don't let it fade away from here. /// and now he's all she sees, she stays awake to watch him breathe, the unknown poetry, sweet sonnets of how it should be. Hold me now, don't let it fade away from here.")

but I'd have to say my number one pick is:
"Naked As We Came" - Iron and Wine. It's a beautiful song about growing old together, and you can't go wrong with Iron and Wine!

    ReplyDelete
  44. wonderful world by louis armstrong, and it's short and sweet so that you're not out there forever. :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. amanda3:13 AM

"Fields of Gold" by Eva Cassidy. So beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  46. "Cheek to cheek" by Frank Sinatra.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Sudie6:03 AM

our first dance was to Elton Johns "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" as it's 'our song' however a wedding I recently went to had "Somewhere over the Rainbow" which although it sounds twee was absolutely stunning - and I've always liked the idea of Neil Diamond's "Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon" but probably more for the comedy value...

    ReplyDelete
  48. dire straits' romeo and juliet (the live version with the great saxophone and guitar),

or wonderful tonight by eric clapton, just because. :)

i'm only 20 this year, but i dream of dancing to these when i finally get married.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Anonymous7:00 AM

If I ever did have a wedding, the first dance would be 'Sea of Love' - but the Catpower version. It's such a beautiful song!

    ReplyDelete
  50. "have i told you lately" but by Van Morrison NOT Rod Stewart. Love it!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Guess I am on the same page as airstreamdiva. We had a big band at our reception and our song was 'It Had to Be You'

    ReplyDelete
  52. I just remembered another one:
"Lovely Tonight" by Joshua Radin. So sweet and pretty! Listen to it on his myspace.

    ReplyDelete
  53. We danced to Come Away With Me By Norah Jones. It has the most romantic beginning. Also, All I Want Is You by U2 from Reality Bites is my all time favorite romantic song.

  55. my husband & I danced to "The Way you the things you do" by The Temptations and half way through the UB40 version took over(that's really our song!)

    ReplyDelete
  56. 'What a Wonderful World' by Louis Armstrong is favourite song in the world. But Etta James' 'At Last' is up there too.

    ReplyDelete
  57. under my skin - sinatra

    ReplyDelete
  58. We didn't have dancing at our wedding, but I walked down the aisle to a friend strumming In My Life by the Beatles on the guitar. To my mind, it is the perfect wedding song. It is romantic, but light and optimistic. Also all the guests usually know the song and that adds to the nice moment.

    ReplyDelete

my husband and i danced to "if i should fall behind" by bruce springsteen. i personally think it's the ultimate "first dance" song.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Although it may sound cheesy, I love "When I First Saw You" from the Dreamgirls Soundtrack. There are two versions of it, one very acoustic and the other one a little more dramatic.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Oh Gosh!

    Here are my top three:

    God Only Knows (Beach Boys)
    Jesus Etc (Wilco)
    Favourite Book (Stars)

    ReplyDelete
  67. Anonymous12:39 PM

"never my love" by the association

    ReplyDelete
  68. At Last (My Love Has Come Along)
    Mack Gordon/Harry Warren
At last, my love has come along,
    My lonely days are over,
And life is like a song,

    Ohhh at last
    The stars above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clover,
The night I looked at you

I found a dream that I could speak to,
A dream that I, can call my own,
I found a thrill, to press my cheek to,
A thrill that I, have never known,

    Ohhh you smile, you smile
And then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven,
for you are mine, at last!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Agreed on "At Last". That was our first dance. Worked especially well since we'd been together for 7 years before our wedding (started dating in high school).

    ReplyDelete
  70. Anonymous1:56 PM

    The Very Thought of You.

    ReplyDelete
  71. My husband and I chose the classic Beatles "Here, There, and Everywhere" It's sweet but not cheesy. We unintentionally had a Beatles wedding. I walked down the aisle to an acoustic guitar playing "Here Comes the Sun" and we ended our ceremony with "I've Just Seen a Face". Just to mix it up we played Glen Phillips "Don't Need Anything" while we lit candles. That's also a good first dance song.

    ReplyDelete
  72. what about the beatles "love you forever"

    ReplyDelete
  73. what about the beatles "love you forever"

    ReplyDelete
  74. My husband and I danced to an acoustic version of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Maps. My friend just told me today that she heard the song somewhere and it reminded her of our wedding.

    ReplyDelete
  75. all of my days by alexi murdoch.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Stacey Kent singing "They All Laughed" - it's such a sweet one, and she's fantastic. Gershwin!

"They all laughed at Rockefeller Center, now they're fighting to get in

They all laughed at Whitney and his cotton gin

They all laughed Fulton and his steamboat, Hershey and his chocolate bar

Ford and his Lizzie, kept the laughers busy, that's how people are

They laughed at me wanting you, said it would be, "Hello, Goodbye."

But oh, you came through, now they're eating humble pie

They all said we'd never get together, darling, let's take a bow

For ho, ho, ho! Who's got the last laugh?

Hee, hee, hee! Who's got the last laugh now?"

    ReplyDelete
  77. My husband and I are big nature lovers so we used John Denver's Annie's Song last year for our first dance (was very popular in the 70s):

You fill up my senses like a light in the forest, like a mountain in springtime, like a walk in the rain, like a storm in the desert, like a sleepy blue ocean, you fill up my senses, come fill me again

come let me love you, let me give my life to you, let me drown in your laughter, let me die in your arms, let me lay down beside you, let me give my life to you, come let me love you, come love me again

    ReplyDelete
  78. Somewhere Over the Rainbow...great message and I believe it is in every Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan movie

Ours was "I Must Have Done Something Good," from The Sound of Music.

    ReplyDelete
  80. We danced to "64" by the Beatles... upbeat & unusual, but was great!

By far the best idea I have ever seen is the one in this video:

Thanks for posting this gorgeous picture. I am perpetually in love with the images of the Kennedy's and our American Camelot.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Hello sweet Jo! Thank you for the lovely comment you left on my blog. I am sorry I am late to this post but it has been great fun reading all of the suggestions!
    I agree with:
    The Luckiest by Ben Folds
In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel

What about All You Need Is Love by The Beatles or the version from Love Actually
It Had to Be You by Frank or Harry Connick Jnr
Strangers in the Night by Frank Sinatra. Actually pretty much any Sinatra would be great!
We Are in Love by Harry Connick Jnr! Quite jazzy, so perfect for lots of twists and dips. They could really show off their fancy footwork.
    The Sweetest Thing by U2
Just Like Heaven by The Cure
and my fave - Islands in the Stream by Dolly & Kenny.
My friend's first song at her wedding dance was Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice!

    ReplyDelete
  95. Our first dance was to Van Morrison's "into the mystic"

    ReplyDelete
  96. "Into the Mystic" is for the honeymoon night! That has to be one of the sexiest songs of all time.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Our first song was "Over the Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole which is such a great upbeat version! I heard it at another wedding a few years ago and fell in love with it. Our second choice was another great song..."When you say nothing at all" by Alison Krause. Good luck and let us know what you choose!

    ReplyDelete
  98. "Let's Do It" a Cole Porter song. We danced to the version sung by Billie Holiday - it was upbeat and tremendous fun to dance to!

Whatever you do, don't choose "At Last" by Etta James. Sooooo predictable. Everyone will roll their eyes inside!

I don't really have any suggestions and this is a little off topic, but speaking of the pixies, I lost my virginity to here comes your man...it just happened to be playing on the telly at the time but it was rather appropriate!

And to the person who said Dire Straights Romeo and Juliet...I"m pretty sure you wouldnt be saying that if your name was in fact Juliet...plenty of jokes were made at my expense to the lyrics "when we made love, you used to cry" at high school! Altho my current boyfriend put it on a mix cd for me and i realised it is a lovely song!

    ReplyDelete
  104. wow, juliet! that is hilarious and so appropriate.

"My Love for You is Real" by Ryan Adams and the Cardinals. Slow enought to dance to, sweet lyrics, but still unique.

My love for you is real
It moves like a summer breeze
My love for you is strong
Lord it brings me to my knees

    Its born in the wild
    This real love
    Love strong
    True love is ours
    Honey now
My love for you is real

My love for you is gone
    Candy sweet and thunder strange
My love for you is wild
    It breaks the lockets melting

My love for you is long
Across the oceans all the same
My love for you is true
Need exchange the love it takes

    It's born in the wild
    It's river long
    Rock strong
    True never stings
    Honey now
My love for you is real

    Uh huh
    It's real, ohhh
    It's real, ohhh
    Honey now
My love for you is real.

"There's No Other Like My Baby" The Crystals

What a great collection of ideas, I get married in 3 months time and we're struggling on this one too - I'll be going through some of these on itunes later!!

My favourite artist is Kate Rusby - she's a folk singer and most of her songs are just too depressing/inappropriate for a wedding

    - she has a lovely duet with Ronan Keating 'All over again' - perfect for a wedding song, but my other half vetoed it cos it's Ronan...
