Dear readers, my friend has a pressing question: What is a great wedding first dance song? She is getting married in August and is looking for a romantic song, but all the ones she likes seem to have depressing lyrics! Any ideas, my lovelies?

that's a hard one, i've always though beautiful tonight by eric clapton should be in there somewhere. but, i'm not sure about for the first song.
ReplyDeleten
I feel a bit silly suggesting 'The Book of Love' by the Magnetic Fields because it was in 'Shall We Dance', but I still love it so much.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't have a first dance song at our wedding, but that would have been a contender.
Dump's cover of 'Everlasting Love' is very sweet (kazoos!), and I'm sure there has to be something by the Kinks that would be lovely...
I'm not a huge fan of Bright Eyes, but 'First Day of My Life,' is really touching.
We used "Breathe Me" by Sia for our first dance song, because it's "our song."
ReplyDeleteAnother good choice is "The Luckiest" by Ben Folds.
My suggestion is that she use a song that means something to her and her fiance.
"Heavenly Day" by Patti Griffin is one of my favorites! Or how about "These Are The Days" by Van Morrison?
ReplyDeletei LOVE first day of my life. funnily enough, it's the only bright eyes song i own (and maybe have even heard), but it is so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteGavin DeGraw has a couple of good ones, "More than Anyone" and "Meaning" are good, but better from his "chariot stripped/acoustic" album.
ReplyDeleteThere is always "Grow Old With Me"...and even though it's cheesy, I really like "Look After You" by The Fray, because I think it's so romantic and has a great beat for slow dancing.
Ours was "Wander Where You Wander" by Rebecka Törnqvist. It'll make everyone mist up :)
ReplyDeleteI like "At Last" by Etta James. It's always struck me as a perfectly romantic song for a wedding.
ReplyDeletethese are a little fast-paced, but it might be fun to play:
ReplyDeleteCan't Take My Eyes Off You, Frankie Valli
You Are the Sunshine of My Life, Stevie Wonder
is this first dance for the couple?
ReplyDeleteif so, Songbird by Eva Cassidy. such a beautiful song and such a beautiful voice
Ours was 'Love Me Tender' by Elvis. I also love 'Sunshine of My Life' ... that was a contender.
ReplyDeleteI agree with "At last"...I walked down the aisle to it...
ReplyDeleteor "What a wonderful world" or "you belong to me" bob dylan...so fun and stressful to pick the special songs
I love Ryan Adam's song "Two". I'm an indie-a-holic, but I do love this song so much. It's a little indie, mostly acoustic. It's really beautiful and when I listen to it- and hear his voice... I get goose bumps.
ReplyDeleteI also love Radiohead's - All I Need
Landon Pigg, Falling In Love At A Coffee Shop
Elton John... Your Song
David Gray.. This Year's Love
Nick Drake.. Northern Sky
:) And congrads to the happy couple!
We used "Garden in the Rain" by Diana Krall...still sends shivers down my spine to hear it.
ReplyDeleteWe danced to "Ice Cream" by Sarah MacLachlan ("your love is better than ice cream ... "). But that *was* 13 years ago.
ReplyDeleteOh, and my husband walked up the aisle to the Pixies' "Here Comes Your Man." That was fun.
Leah
our first dance was to "Sunday Kind of Love" by Etta James, which is the song my husband proposed to me with...
ReplyDeletehere comes your man = genius!!!
ReplyDeletealso, L, there's this list on the Knot:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.theknot.com/ch_article.html?Object=AI91227155151
Hands down best wedding song is At Last by Etta James...soulful and it is about finding your true love.
ReplyDeletethe best ever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vqiw-Kqtlr0
ReplyDeleteL.O.V.E by Nate King Cole! (The french version)
ReplyDeletemaybe...
ReplyDeleteIt had to be you (big band style)
Embraceable you (big band)
What a wonderful world ... Louis Armstrong
People will say we're in Love ... as sung by Nancy Wilson (big band style)
OR
The first time ever I saw your face by Roberta Flack
Anyone Else but You (from the movie Juno)
this is fun!!
Aussie artist LIOR - "This Old Love".... just beautiful!!
ReplyDelete"By your side," Sade...
ReplyDelete- Jessie -
...or a slow acoustic version of a classic rock song, making it sound sweeter while maintaining the rawness that rock captures so well -- it would be familiar, but wouldn't sound overplayed.
a friend just emailed with the suggestion:
ReplyDeleteTry Frank Sinatra's "Polka Dots and Moonbeans" ...the 1961 recording.
...ooo, "have i told you lately," Rod Stewart!
ReplyDeleteor take it way back with Louis Armstrong's "you go to my head" for something really slow.
My sister used the oldies song "Sea of Love" by Phil Phillips, but there is also a new version by Cat Powers. Great, happy love song!
ReplyDeleteIt's an oldies song that isn't often played, but it's just dreamy and sweet and the lyrics are perfect for a wedding/first dance.
ReplyDelete"Let Me Love You" by George Goodman and the Headliners.
An mp3 for preview can be found here:
http://www.thedoowopjukebox.com/
july05/Let%20Me%20Love%20You%20-%20
George%20Goodman%20&%20Headliners%20'
65%20Val-1.mp3
And the lyrics are:
"Take me in your arms,
and let me love you.
I just want to love you
for the rest of my life.
Hold me oh so close
and look into my eyes
I need you to realize
that you really love me too.
I want to give you all my life
Darling, how am I to do this
unless you take me in your arms
and love me?
Take me in your arms
and let me love you.
I just want to love you
for the rest of my life.
I, yes, I want to give you all my life.
Darling, how am I how to do this,
unless you take me in your arms
and love me?
Take me in your arms
and let me love you.
I just want to love you
for the rest of my life.
For the rest of my life."
You really have to hear the song to get the full effect, but it's incredibly romantic.
What about John Lennon's song 'God Bless Our Love?' Sooo beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWe did "The Way You Make Me Feel" by Michael Jackson. Fun, poppy, good beat. I don't know about all these sappy indie love songs...
ReplyDelete"love and some verses" - iron & wine
ReplyDelete"sea of love" - cat power
"us" regina spektor
"i'm sticking with you" - velvet underground
Congrats!
"this will be our year" by the zombies. the best.
ReplyDelete"Here Comes Your Man" is so much fun!!! "Everything" by Michael Buble, "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel, "I Melt with You" by Modern English... those are what I thought of off the top of my head. Love the Jackie O and Jack Kennedy photo!!
ReplyDeletemy aunt and uncle's first song was "cheek to cheek" sung by fred astaire. i still think it's ridiculously romantic, because my uncle was singing it to her, and they came out dancing and flirting. it was adorable.
ReplyDeleteWild Horses by the Rolling Stones
ReplyDeleteLOL. Check this one out: http://youtube.com/watch?v=aeoi16lScf4
ReplyDeleteP.S you're on my link list.
ReplyDeleteStorybook Story by Mark Knopfler it was on the Princess Bride Soundtrack...
ReplyDeleteour first dance song was God Only Knows by the Beach Boys. It was classic, slow but not too slow, and oh so romantic.
ReplyDeleteHow about "Prettiest Eyes" by Beautiful South or "I Will" by the Beatles? I really and truly love those songs.
ReplyDeletei've never been married, but one day i'd like to chose between-
ReplyDelete"the book of love- the magnetic fields
"i found a reason"- cat power
or "wild horses"
"Here Comes the Sun" by George Harrison.
ReplyDeleteSorry this is so long. Here are some suggestions, off the top of my head:
ReplyDeleteI'm a big fan of humility, so the idea of this song being played at a wedding is so touching. It's called "I go to the barn," by Band of Horses. Here's a sample of the lyrics:
"Outside, by your doorstep, in a worn-out suit and tie. I'll wait for you to come down, where you'll find me, where we'll shine."
"Masterfade" by Andrew Bird is adorable and very couple-oriented.
"The Very Thought of You" - Billie Holiday's version
"Ice Age" - Pete Yorn
"Don't Let it Fade" - Sunday's Best ("trace around her lips, with his fingers he tries to draw on a smile...now she's all he sees, he stays awake to watch her breathe the unheard melodies, grace notes of her restless sleep. Hold me now, don't let it fade away from here. /// and now he's all she sees, she stays awake to watch him breathe, the unknown poetry, sweet sonnets of how it should be. Hold me now, don't let it fade away from here.")
but I'd have to say my number one pick is:
"Naked As We Came" - Iron and Wine. It's a beautiful song about growing old together, and you can't go wrong with Iron and Wine!
wonderful world by louis armstrong, and it's short and sweet so that you're not out there forever. :)
ReplyDelete"Fields of Gold" by Eva Cassidy. So beautiful!
ReplyDelete"Cheek to cheek" by Frank Sinatra.
ReplyDeleteour first dance was to Elton Johns "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" as it's 'our song' however a wedding I recently went to had "Somewhere over the Rainbow" which although it sounds twee was absolutely stunning - and I've always liked the idea of Neil Diamond's "Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon" but probably more for the comedy value...
ReplyDeletedire straits' romeo and juliet (the live version with the great saxophone and guitar),
ReplyDeleteor wonderful tonight by eric clapton, just because. :)
i'm only 20 this year, but i dream of dancing to these when i finally get married.
If I ever did have a wedding, the first dance would be 'Sea of Love' - but the Catpower version. It's such a beautiful song!
ReplyDelete"have i told you lately" but by Van Morrison NOT Rod Stewart. Love it!
ReplyDeleteGuess I am on the same page as airstreamdiva. We had a big band at our reception and our song was 'It Had to Be You'
ReplyDeleteI just remembered another one:
ReplyDelete"Lovely Tonight" by Joshua Radin. So sweet and pretty! Listen to it on his myspace.
We danced to Come Away With Me By Norah Jones. It has the most romantic beginning. Also, All I Want Is You by U2 from Reality Bites is my all time favorite romantic song.
ReplyDeletehere's a great 1st dance:
ReplyDeletehttp://youtube.com/watch?v=aeoi16lScf4
my husband & I danced to "The Way you the things you do" by The Temptations and half way through the UB40 version took over(that's really our song!)
ReplyDelete'What a Wonderful World' by Louis Armstrong is favourite song in the world. But Etta James' 'At Last' is up there too.
ReplyDeleteunder my skin - sinatra
ReplyDeleteWe didn't have dancing at our wedding, but I walked down the aisle to a friend strumming In My Life by the Beatles on the guitar. To my mind, it is the perfect wedding song. It is romantic, but light and optimistic. Also all the guests usually know the song and that adds to the nice moment.
ReplyDeleteBest wedding dance song ever is:
ReplyDeleteGolddigger by Kanye West
followed closely by
Baby Got Back. by Sir Mix-A Lot.
:-)
Toothpaste Kisses by the Maccabees. Just a sweet little lovesong!
ReplyDeletethe way you look tonight, tony bennetts version
ReplyDeleteI don't know if this has been suggested, but how about Crazy love by Van Morrison? I think that is such a sweet song.
ReplyDeletethese are AMAZING suggestions. you guys are incredible!
ReplyDeletemy friend mike just recommended I'll Take You There by the staple singers. here's the youtube video, looks very fun:)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLHwWrhN7DQ
my husband and i danced to "if i should fall behind" by bruce springsteen. i personally think it's the ultimate "first dance" song.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it may sound cheesy, I love "When I First Saw You" from the Dreamgirls Soundtrack. There are two versions of it, one very acoustic and the other one a little more dramatic.
ReplyDeleteOh Gosh!
ReplyDeleteHere are my top three:
God Only Knows (Beach Boys)
Jesus Etc (Wilco)
Favourite Book (Stars)
"never my love" by the association
ReplyDeleteAt Last (My Love Has Come Along)
ReplyDeleteMack Gordon/Harry Warren
At last, my love has come along,
My lonely days are over,
And life is like a song,
Ohhh at last
The stars above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clover,
The night I looked at you
I found a dream that I could speak to,
A dream that I, can call my own,
I found a thrill, to press my cheek to,
A thrill that I, have never known,
Ohhh you smile, you smile
And then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven,
for you are mine, at last!
Agreed on "At Last". That was our first dance. Worked especially well since we'd been together for 7 years before our wedding (started dating in high school).
ReplyDeleteThe Very Thought of You.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I chose the classic Beatles "Here, There, and Everywhere" It's sweet but not cheesy. We unintentionally had a Beatles wedding. I walked down the aisle to an acoustic guitar playing "Here Comes the Sun" and we ended our ceremony with "I've Just Seen a Face". Just to mix it up we played Glen Phillips "Don't Need Anything" while we lit candles. That's also a good first dance song.
ReplyDeletewhat about the beatles "love you forever"
ReplyDeletewhat about the beatles "love you forever"
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I danced to an acoustic version of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Maps. My friend just told me today that she heard the song somewhere and it reminded her of our wedding.
ReplyDeleteall of my days by alexi murdoch.
ReplyDeleteStacey Kent singing "They All Laughed" - it's such a sweet one, and she's fantastic. Gershwin!
ReplyDelete"They all laughed at Rockefeller Center, now they're fighting to get in
They all laughed at Whitney and his cotton gin
They all laughed Fulton and his steamboat, Hershey and his chocolate bar
Ford and his Lizzie, kept the laughers busy, that's how people are
They laughed at me wanting you, said it would be, "Hello, Goodbye."
But oh, you came through, now they're eating humble pie
They all said we'd never get together, darling, let's take a bow
For ho, ho, ho! Who's got the last laugh?
Hee, hee, hee! Who's got the last laugh now?"
My husband and I are big nature lovers so we used John Denver's Annie's Song last year for our first dance (was very popular in the 70s):
ReplyDeleteYou fill up my senses like a light in the forest, like a mountain in springtime, like a walk in the rain, like a storm in the desert, like a sleepy blue ocean, you fill up my senses, come fill me again
come let me love you, let me give my life to you, let me drown in your laughter, let me die in your arms, let me lay down beside you, let me give my life to you, come let me love you, come love me again
Somewhere Over the Rainbow...great message and I believe it is in every Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan movie
ReplyDeleteOurs was "I Must Have Done Something Good," from The Sound of Music.
ReplyDeleteWe danced to "64" by the Beatles... upbeat & unusual, but was great!
ReplyDeleteBy far the best idea I have ever seen is the one in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byj_y0E0ktQ
So creative!
how about "come fly with me" by frank sinatra?
ReplyDeleteMarry me by Neil Diamond!!
ReplyDeleteMy best friend used " Never Tear us Apart" by INXS
ReplyDeletei'm a little late but i really like royal wood's i'm so glad. it's going to be my friend's first dance song.
ReplyDeleteCan't help her unless she's from Jersey because I danced to "Jersey Girl"!
ReplyDeletemy first dance was to jackie wilson's "lonely teardrops" -
ReplyDeleteit wasn't planned but my husband knew i loved the song and we had such a good time dancing to it.
also "you belong to me" by bob dylan.
ReplyDeleteTHE MAN I LOVE
ReplyDeletethese are soooo amazing, thank you so much! my friend emailed to say she is downloading them all through iTunes--she has so many incredibly choices! i'm excited to see what she picks....
ReplyDeleteI think our wedding song was the best - "somersault" by zero 7, sung by Sia.
ReplyDeleteMy SIL + BIL danced to Regina Spektor's cover of 'Real Love' - I loved it! Such a beautiful song, and i loved that it wasn't girly..
ReplyDeleteWith whom to dance - Magnetic fields. It is so sweet.
ReplyDeletewow. as the friend Jo mentioned, i feel like I have to comment here. all these ideas are incredible. what a creative bunch of readers...I'm not sure which song i'm going with yet, but I'll let you know when i do. thanks, JoJo (and cup of jo)!
ReplyDeleteIn agreement with several others... I love Etta James' song "At Last". (I think Celine Dion has also done a version of it.)
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this gorgeous picture. I am perpetually in love with the images of the Kennedy's and our American Camelot.
Hello sweet Jo! Thank you for the lovely comment you left on my blog. I am sorry I am late to this post but it has been great fun reading all of the suggestions!
ReplyDeleteI agree with:
The Luckiest by Ben Folds
In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel
What about All You Need Is Love by The Beatles or the version from Love Actually
It Had to Be You by Frank or Harry Connick Jnr
Strangers in the Night by Frank Sinatra. Actually pretty much any Sinatra would be great!
We Are in Love by Harry Connick Jnr! Quite jazzy, so perfect for lots of twists and dips. They could really show off their fancy footwork.
The Sweetest Thing by U2
Just Like Heaven by The Cure
and my fave - Islands in the Stream by Dolly & Kenny.
My friend's first song at her wedding dance was Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice!
Our first dance was to Van Morrison's "into the mystic"
ReplyDelete"Into the Mystic" is for the honeymoon night! That has to be one of the sexiest songs of all time.
ReplyDeleteOur first song was "Over the Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole which is such a great upbeat version! I heard it at another wedding a few years ago and fell in love with it. Our second choice was another great song..."When you say nothing at all" by Alison Krause. Good luck and let us know what you choose!
ReplyDelete"Let's Do It" a Cole Porter song. We danced to the version sung by Billie Holiday - it was upbeat and tremendous fun to dance to!
ReplyDelete"You Send Me" by Sam Cooke. I loooove that one.
ReplyDeletesting's version of "my one and only love" is perfect. i don't know who originally sang this....
ReplyDeleteWhatever you do, don't choose "At Last" by Etta James. Sooooo predictable. Everyone will roll their eyes inside!
ReplyDeleteOur first dance was "My Baby Just Cares For Me" by Nina Simone.
ReplyDeleteI don't really have any suggestions and this is a little off topic, but speaking of the pixies, I lost my virginity to here comes your man...it just happened to be playing on the telly at the time but it was rather appropriate!
ReplyDeleteAnd to the person who said Dire Straights Romeo and Juliet...I"m pretty sure you wouldnt be saying that if your name was in fact Juliet...plenty of jokes were made at my expense to the lyrics "when we made love, you used to cry" at high school! Altho my current boyfriend put it on a mix cd for me and i realised it is a lovely song!
wow, juliet! that is hilarious and so appropriate.
ReplyDelete"My Love for You is Real" by Ryan Adams and the Cardinals. Slow enought to dance to, sweet lyrics, but still unique.
ReplyDeleteMy love for you is real
It moves like a summer breeze
My love for you is strong
Lord it brings me to my knees
Its born in the wild
This real love
Love strong
True love is ours
Honey now
My love for you is real
My love for you is gone
Candy sweet and thunder strange
My love for you is wild
It breaks the lockets melting
My love for you is long
Across the oceans all the same
My love for you is true
Need exchange the love it takes
It's born in the wild
It's river long
Rock strong
True never stings
Honey now
My love for you is real
Uh huh
It's real, ohhh
It's real, ohhh
Honey now
My love for you is real.
My husband and I danced to "I will not take my love away" By Matt Wertz. It is short but we love it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLOqfVJeQ5g&feature=related
ReplyDeleteHere is an interesting take on using "At Last"...
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sm4AKCGrySk
reflecting light - sam phillips
ReplyDeleteI highly, highly agree with the person who said "This Will Be Our Year" by the Zombies.
ReplyDeleteI would also add
"Pledging My Love" JOhnny Ace
"There's No Other Like My Baby" The Crystals
What a great collection of ideas, I get married in 3 months time and we're struggling on this one too - I'll be going through some of these on itunes later!!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite artist is Kate Rusby - she's a folk singer and most of her songs are just too depressing/inappropriate for a wedding
- she has a lovely duet with Ronan Keating 'All over again' - perfect for a wedding song, but my other half vetoed it cos it's Ronan...
^^

When we dance no matter what rhymt we prefer, the activity always reflect our welfare . When we dance frequently we can notice a change not only in our mood too but believe it or not in the sexual performance. When some cases when the erectil dysfunction present like a problem, to buy viagra is a great alternative.
