Lolita

Have you ever read Lolita? I waited a long time to read it because the thought of an older man seducing a young girl upset me. But finally I went for it, and lo and behold, I loved it. The writing is gorgeous, the plot compelling and the characters hilarious and vivid. And even though you hate Humbert Humbert, the narrator, it's fascinating to see inside his mind.

This photo by Gisela Flic is EXACTLY how I envisioned Lolita. I gasped when I stumbled across it.

Here's a typical Lolita ensemble:
Heart-shaped sunglasses
a plaid shirt
and denim button-up shorts.

  11. A friend gave it to me so I HAD to read it, and actually found it very good. However, I live Nabokov's short stories better.
Did you know that as a child in Russia he had dachshunds like my own little Benjy (aka the Oracle)? I saw pics in his autobio, 'Speak, memory'.

The movie starring Jeremy Irons is great, too.

  24. I read it this year, and thought it wouldn't bother me because i've read a lot of books others wouldn't touch, b/c of disturbing imagery, or otherwise.

I have to say, it wasn't a fave, and although it's on my bookshelf, I think I may take it to the Op Shop soon. I feel kinda creepy having it in my home....

  30. I clicked on this because Lolita is actually one of my favorites... it's a terrible subject, but a prose poem. And English wasn't even Nabokov's first language! I haven't seen the Kubrick movie but I think I want to...
