All his life, my dad dreamed about going to Iceland. When he finally traveled there last fall, it was even more stunning and dramatic than he had expected. When he returned home to Michigan, he still had vivid dreams about Iceland for weeks. My sister said it was like a woman he had always loved. So, this Christmas, I surprised my dad with Reykjavik by Ami Sioux (via Lost). Sioux asked fifty Reykjavik residents to sketch maps to their favorite places. Facing the maps are Sioux's photos of the sites, including a fish store with good homemade fishcakes, an old graveyard and "my home when I was four." I hope my dad is liking the book!
P.S. This is cool, too.

It's fantastic!
ReplyDeletewauh - what a great find and what a perfect gift!
ReplyDeleteIceland is so cool, and fabulous style and design! As a quick travel tip, if you fly Iceland Air to Europe(my fav airline for many reasons), you can stop over in Iceland for up to 7 days without penalty. I did it on my way back from Berlin and loved it. Cool book.

Wow, that is a beautiful book! I love the hand sketched maps.
ReplyDeleteIn Sophrology courses, you're always being asked to picture yourself in your imaginary or real favorite place, because it straightly induces relaxation. Mine could be India or Brittany in France.
ReplyDeletewhat a great and thoughtful present....the book really looks interesting and I am sure your dad really liked it.

ReplyDeleteIceland was truly wonderful, and I feel we got a real measure of the place: its scenic beauty, its beguiling mystery, its unforgiving nature, its extraordinary history. I cannot wait to return.

Hi, new commenter here -- this is a beautiful blog, always full of such intriguing things. I had to comment to say:
ReplyDeleteIceland is a truly incredible place to visit, yes!! I was so excited when I finally got to go and it didn't disappoint me either. Also -- the food -- it's got some phenomenal cuisine, I don't know if too many people know that.
The book looks special -- thanks for the tip.
Thank you for the introduction (to this book)!
