The Case of the Crying Babies

Oh my god, these photographs are heartbreaking. In her political series "End Times," Jill Greenberg seeks to portray children's faces in a future, disastrous 'present day.' I love the photos' emotion and richness, but it's upsetting to think about the babies being made to cry. In fact, there was big controversy surrounding the exhibition last summer--people questioned Greenberg's ethics and even accused her of child abuse.
But her gallery quickly explained that the photographs were digitally manipulated (meaning, the babies never actually cried like that) and released a VERY interesting essay Regarding What is Real in Photography. They say that perhaps Greenberg got such a strong response because she is TOO good at what she does; and that people instinctually believe everything they see in a photograph, whereas they're able to see film, paintings and other media as imaginative constructs. I'd recommend reading the thoughtful essay if you have a second. And, with that, my readers, thank you for reading family week. I hope you enjoyed it! Now onto the next....

joanna, i enjoyed looking through these photographs. it was a good post and a good blog.
Great essay. Nice to encounter a photographer who's so articulate about her work.
Astonishing! thanks.
oh wait! that essay I linked to was actually a little misleading (or maybe i interpreted it incorrectly). greenberg actually DID make the babes cry...
here are some quotes from an interview here (http://www.popphoto.com/inamericanphotomagazine/2552/cry-babies.html):
"I'm not causing anyone permanent psychological damage....Mostly we [got the kids to cry] by giving them something, a lollypop, and then taking it away. Some would just cry for no reason—my daughter did that; she didn't like standing on the apple box I used for a platform because it was a little wobbly. Some just wouldn't cry at all. For all the kids I worked really fast. We would book 12 or so for one day, and see who we could make cry. At the end of the day I was not in a good mood. I don't like making little kids cry....The images have a real power--they immediately get under your skin. The emotion you see is just so compelling, yet they're beautiful at the same time."
very interesting. i have mixed feelings about it, but in the end, i think i fall on the side of the art in this case....
I do have a problem with these photographs. And I am not one of those sensationalist right-winged bible thumpers like some of the bloggers who have written about her. (just Google Jill Greenberg and you'll see...) I agree with Greenberg politically. What I can't appreciate is the blatant manipulation of a child. I have a 4 year old son and, yes, he does cry very easily and I think I even photographed him naturally crying as a baby. But I would never intentionally make him cry for any reason. To do it for art's sake is really quite disgusting. Just because there won't be any lasting psycological damage doesn't really justify treating a small child little better than a lab rat.
Imagine this scenario:
You're sitting around with some friends and their kid when suddenly the Mother of child says: "Hey, let's see if I can make him cry. I'll take away his toy and get him to cry for just a second and then give it back. Wow, when he makes that face it reminds me of how I felt when Bush got re-elected!"
Wouldn't you be just a little disturbed by that situation? (Not to mention appalled by the pretention!) But when an "artist" does the same thing in a well lit studio with careful staging and it's "astonishing" and people are willing to pay $5000 for a piece of it.
I saw these images at the gallery, and they were so moving. i loved them!!!
